There are many interesting stories in the paper. You just need to know what you are looking at.
"I spend about half an hour reading newspapers every day", said 15-year-old Guo Binghua from Henan. "What
interests me most are the things happening at schools.
School news is just one kind of news story in newspapers. There is also news from around the world一from
    international problems to pop stars.
If you read the newspaper carefully, you'll find there're different kinds of articles on the pages:
        News stories
These stories are about events. Reporters try to show all sides of a story to help readers understand what
happened. Reporters try to speak to as many people as possible. They also use pictures and numbers to
convince readers that the stories are true. Teens has lots of news stories on the news page and front page. When
you read stories, you hear about the facts; not the writers' ideas.
        Opinion (观点) writing
Opinion writing is usually about something happening right now, But it isn't just facts. Here writers add in
their own opinions. Writers choose only the facts that help back up (支持) their ideas. They are trying to
persuade (说服) readers. This is usually the kind of story that gets people thinking. Go to "Speak Out" on page
two for an example of opinion writing in Teens.

My little brother is six years old, in first grade. Yesterday, he gave mum a letter from his teacher. "I got a
red flag (红旗) today. Could you please sign this note?" he said. The note showed that he had been talking during
reading time. He gets a "red flag" Only once in a while. His real worry is that he hardly ever gets top scores in his
school work. The best he gets is "OK" but often his score is "You can do better than this". My mum tells me
"You can do better than this" would mean "Very bad" in China. It's interesting, though, because teachers for little
kids in America never say anything too bad about their students; even if the students are making trouble in class
or not working bard enough. The worst they might say is "Please be nicer tomorrow". Many parents are pleased
with a B-grade for each subject.
I've heard that things are different in Chinese schools. Expectations (期望) are very high for students. Even
from first grade, homework was quite a lot for my relatives in Nanjing. I sometimes felt that my first-grade
Chinese cousin spent more time on homework than I did when I was a 6th grader in the US (this is the same as
the 6th grade in China)! Yet his parents thought he was a bad student. But to me, he was smart, even though he
didn't meet his parents' expectations. My parents tell me that some students who live in China before coming to
this country are years earlier in maths and science!
Do you think it's too strict in China? Or do you think that it's not strict enough in America? Maybe both are
    true!
    1. The writer's little brother got a red flag yesterday because he _______.
    [     ]
    A. did something good
    B. worked hard enough
    C. got top scores
    D. made trouble class
    2. When students get, "OK" it means they get ______ scores in their schoolwork.
    [     ]
    A. top
    B. medium
    C. lowest
    D. the best
    3. Many parents in America don't get _______ when their kids get a B-grade in their school.
    [     ]
    A. happy
    B. glad
    C. angry
    D. pleased
    4. From the passage we can clearly see the writer thinks _______.
    [     ]
    A. American-teachers are better than Chinese teachers
    B. expectations in China are too high for students
    C. teachers should be strict with students
    D. Chinese teachers are not kind enough to students
    5. The story mainly tells us _______.
    [     ]
    A. about the different expectations between China and America
    B. Chinese kids spend more time on schoolwork than American kids do
    C. it s not strict enough in American schools

Growing up to be independent (独立)
Growing up is not always easy. When facing difficulties, courage arid a spirit of independence can be more
useful than crying for help. That's what Hong Zhanhui's story of growing from boy to man with family
    hardships tell us.
Hong was born in 1982 in a poor family in Yihua County, Henan province. When he was only 11, his father
became mentally (精神上) ill and one day came back with an abandoned (被抛弃的) baby girl. A year later,
Hong's mother and younger brother both left home because of being poor and pressure from his ill father. Their
burdens (负担) fell onto the l2-year-old's shoulders: to treat his father's illness, bring up the adopted (领养的)
sister Chenchen, and to go on to study,Hong didn't give up. Since a young age, he has worked in part-time jobs
to feed his family. At they same time, he has studied at college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to
rent a room near his campus for her, and send her to school. After Hong's story went public, people were
moved to tears by his selflessness (无私), Hard as his life was, Hong didn't abandon his father and the adopted
sister because they needed his help. With his hard-won money, he even helped other students struggling against
    misfortunes (厄运).
Today when many tend to Worry more about their own happiness, Hong's deeds remind us of what we
usually neglect (忽略): love and care for others. Without these, none of us could survive Hong turned down
donations from others. He said he felt encouraged by kind offers but he could depend on his own work.
Short of money to buy food, the boy climbed tall trees to get birds' eggs for his baby sister. He walked two
hours at weekends to buy different things to sell around his school to make money. Through his hard life, the
boy developed an ability to rise above misfortune that made him a hero in people's eyes.
Hong's story shows that with love and willpower (意志力), no hardship can defeat a person but himself. So
when facing difficulties don't complain about bad luck. Consider what more you could do for your family and
society and you'll find the world smiling back.
