Several years ago, while attending a communication course (课程), I experienced a most unusual process. The instructor asked us to list (列清单) 1 in our past that we felt 2 of, regretted, or incomplete about and read our lists aloud. This seemed like a very private (私下的) process, 3 there' s always some brave person in the crowd 4 will volunteer. The instructor then 5 that we find ways to 6 people, or take some action to right any wrong doings. I was seriously wondering 7 this could ever make my communication better. Then the man next to me raised his hand and volunteered this story:"Making my 8 , I remembered an incident from high school. I grew up in a small town. There was a Sheriff 9 of us kids liked. One night, my two classmates and I 10 to play a trick (恶作剧) on him. After drinking a few beers, we climbed the tall water tank in the middle of the town, and wrote on the tank in bright red paint: Sheriff Brown is a s.o.b.(畜生). The next day, almost the whole town saw our glorious 11 . Within two hours, Sheriff Brown had us in his office. My friends told the truth but I lied. No one 12 found out." "Nearly 20 years later, Sheriff Brown's name 13 on my list. I didn't even know if he was still 14 . Last weekend, I dialed the information in my hometown and found there was a Roger Brown still listed. I tried his number. After a few 15 , I heard,"Hello?" I said, "Sheriff Brown?" Paused. "Yes." "Well, this is Jimmy Calkins." "And I want you to know that I did it?" Paused. "I knew it!" he yelled back. We had a good laugh and a 16 discussion. His closing words were:"Jimmy, I always felt bad for you 17 your classmates got it off their chest, but you were carrying it 18 all these years. I want to thank you for calling me...for your sake." Jimmy encouraged me to 19 all 101 items on my list within two years, and I always remember what I learned from the course: It's never too late to 20 the past wrongdoings.

Listen carefully, working people, we would like to tell you something that could save your precious time and money! Best of all, it is free! It's "no". What do you ask? We'll say it again:"No". Sweet and simple "no". Say "no" at your office and see how quickly that pile of work on your desk disappears. "Saying 'no' to others means you are saying 'yes' to yourself," said Leslie Charles, a professional speaker from East Lansing, Michigan. "Time is precious. People are spending money buying time. And yet we are willing to give up our time because we can't say 'no'." Susie Watson, a famous writer, said people who always say "yes" need to say "no" without guilt (内疚) or fear of punishment. "I would rather have someone give me a loving 'no' than an obligated (强制的) 'yes'," she said. Susie Watson says she feels "no" obligation to give an explanation when she says "no" either socially or professionally. Does she feel guilty about it? "Not at all," said Watson, who is director of advertising and public relations at Timex Corp in Middlebury, Connecticut. "Most people are afraid of saying 'no'… My advice is to say 'yes' only if you don't mean 'no'." Watson said "no" is the most effective weapon against wasting time. "Every year there are more demands on your time… Other people are happy to use up your time," Watson said. Time saving appears to be "no's" greatest friend. "No" can be your new friend, a powerful tool to take back your life. "No" may even take you further in the business world than"yes". "No" is power and strength. "No" now seems completely correct."Saying 'no' isn't easy. But finally it's greatly liberating," Charles said. But, he added, a "no" project needs to be worked on every day because it is hard to change long-term habit. But, he also warns:"Don't go to extremes. Don't find yourself saying 'no' to everything. In return you should learn to hear 'no'." |
1. The sentence "you are saying 'yes' to yourself" means _____. |
[ ] |
A. you can have more time to play with others B. you needn't care about other's feeling if you are happy C. you are selfish and treat others rudely D. you can deal with your business as you have planned |
2. When you say "no" to others, you should say it in a _____. |
[ ] |
A. secret way B. polite way C. proud way D. guilty way |
3. If a person says "no" to everything, the result he or she receives may be that he or she _____. |
[ ] |
A. enjoys a wonderful life |

If there is one thing I'm sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio or the Internet. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives-the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It's already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic (基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do-as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. It's quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted (传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I'm pretty sure how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read-sports and international news, etc. I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media (媒体). They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn't happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it's never really pleasant to read something just on a screen. |

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries (食品杂货), saving us from having to walk along long distances from where we live. I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before. People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity (人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting. |
1. Why was the bike so important to the couple? |
[ ] |
A. They used it for work and daily life. B. It was their only possession (财产). C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed. D. The man's job was bike racing. |

[ ] |
A. the couple worked 60 hours a week B. people were busy before Christmas C. the stranger brought over the bike D. life was hard for the young family |

[ ] |
A. Strangers are usually of little help. B. One should take care of their bike. C. News reports make people famous. D. An act of kindness can mean a lot. |
4. From this story,we can see humanity is _____. |
[ ] |
A. selfish B. commercial C. kind D. cold-hearted |

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here's how. 1) Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time. 2) Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject. 3) Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says. 4) Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review (回顾) the important points that your teacher taught in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material and it will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer. 5) Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't be overly worried. There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
