Happiness is for everyone. You don't need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with
large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because
those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country
    roads at their free time.
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school,
your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care
    of  your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations (祝贺) to you;
when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something
good to others, you will feel happy too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see
that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say
you are very happy, because you have something else that can't be bought with money.
When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances
to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life
is like a revolving (旋转的) door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be
    a happy and lucky person.
    1. According to the passage happiness is for ______.
    [     ]
    A. the people who have money
    B. the people who have beautiful houses
    C. the people who have nice cars
    D. everyone
    2. When you fall down in a PE class, both your teacher and your classmates will             .
    [     ]
    A. laugh at you
    B. play jokes on you
    C. do nothing for you
    D. help you up
    3. Which is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
    [     ]
    A. People who have cars would never like to walk in the open air.
    B. You can get help from others when you make mistakes.
    C. You can still be a happy person even if you have little money.
    D. Happiness is always around you though difficulties come towards you.
    4. What is the passage about?
    [     ]
    A. Bad luck.
    B. Good luck.
    C. Happiness.
    D. Life.

DIY is very popular in China now. Do you know what it is? Yang Chen works for a computer
business in Beijing. Though he enjoys his work, it is hard for him to relax (放松) after work.
"For a long time, I had no choice (选择) except going to a bar for a drink and karaoke to relax
    myself," he said.
One day when he saw many toy dogs in a toyshop, he had an idea. "Why not do some kinds of
things and relax myself?" Then he began to make model planes, model ships and something else. The
things that he had made by himself don't look as professionally (专业地) made as those in the shops,
    but he likes doing it.
"It is not as much fun to play with things which are bought expensively from the shops," he said.
Now his bookshelves are full of many kinds of things he has made. They are very beautiful, and his
family and friends like them very much.
More and more young people are like Yang, making or creating (创造) things on their own.
They like to do it themselves.
Though making things with our own hands may take much time, some people, now known as
DIYers-do-it-yourselves, enjoy doing it very much. They can make all kinds of things they like. DIY is
becoming more and more popular in China. It may be new to the young, yet many people remember
when it was a way of life.
During the 1960s and 1970s, when there were not enough living things for people to live on, they
had to use their own hands to do many things. White washing the wall or making clothes was a part of
life because there was no other choice. If you wanted something done, you had to do it yourself; and if
you needed something, you made it yourself.

    4. What's the main idea of this passage?

    A. Yang Chen has a new hobby.
    B. How young people create new things.

Many people always say that listening to spoken English is too hard for them. But if you don't
understand what people are saying, how can you talk with them? It may be difficult, but learning by
listening is necessary. It can be done.
As we know, different people have different pronunciations of the same word. Standard (标准)
pronunciation is important for English speaking as well as for listening. In China, people from one area
may not understand what people from another area are saying because of the different Chinese dialects
(方言). Standard Chinese pronunciation can help people from different places understand each other easily.
It is the same with English. If your pronunciation is not standard, it is as hard for other people to
understand you as it is for you to understand them.
If you want to learn how to listen to English, the following ways are helpful.
Get some good books with tapes. Do the exercises, from the simple to the difficult, step by step.
You can also watch English-language films, listen to English-language radio and TV programmes.
Try to listen every day, even if only for a few minutes. At first you may understand few words.
    Don't give up. Just listen.
Remember to red and speak English every day. It will help you a lot. Every day, spend an hour
reading English. Finally you will notice that you're making progress.
Talk to English-speaking people as often as possible. They will speak more slowly with you, use
simple words and use body language to help you understand them. Don't be afraid to talk to them. They
won't mind because they may have more trouble to make themselves understood in Chinese.
    1. Is it possible for people to learn English by listening?

    2. What do you have to do when you talk with English-speaking people?
        ________________________________________________
    3. Why is standard English very important?

    4. How many ways does the writer talk about to practise listening?

    5. When do you feel easier to understand English-speaking people?

Hi, Liu Lin. Thank you for your Christmas card. It's very beautiful. We had a wonderful Christmas. On Christmas Eve, we put up a Christmas tree in the sitting room and hung stockings at the head of our
beds before we went to bed. We found many presents in the stockings the next morning. On Christmas
Day the whole family got together and we had a big dinner. Everyone was very happy. Christmas is the
biggest festival in the western world. Which is the most important festival in China? How do you
celebrate it? What is the traditional food for the dinner? I'm interested in that festival…
