Because of my curiosity (好奇心), I had a really exciting weekend. I took a trip to Gloucester to see
some of the world's most beautiful animals-whales in the North Atlantic Ocean. After a long trip by train
and bus, we got on the ship called the "Privateer". On our way to see the whales on that beautiful sunny
day, I grew more and more excited.
After a while we stopped, and everyone on the ship started to shout because we'd seen whales. It was
    wonderful!
While we were watching the whales, a guide was giving us information about them. She told us we
were seeing only two kinds of whales-50-foot whales (singing whales) and 70-foot whales (the second
largest whales on the earth). She also said we could easily tell the different kinds of whales by their tales
(尾巴), since every whale has a different tail, just as people have different fingerprints (指纹).
They all have names as well. On this trip, we saw "Salt" and "Pepper", two whales named by a scientist
and a fisherman. They swam together all the time. Sometimes whales came so close to the ship that we
    thought we could touch them.
I took twenty-seven photos, which was a really hard job because they moved so quickly, and stayed
on the surface of the ocean for such a short time. Having seen the whales was one of the chances few
people ever got. I was lucky enough to have that chance.
    1. The passage is mainly about _____.

    B. the different kinds of animals in the ocean
    C. a trip to study ocean animals
    D. a trip to see whales

    [     ]
    A. The train.
    B. The plane.
    C. The bus.
    D. The ship.
    3. We can learn from the third paragraph that _____.
    [     ]
    A. there were only two kinds of whales
    B. 70-foot whales are the largest in the world
    C. whales all have different tails
    D. whales have fingerprints as people do
    4. What did the author do when she saw the whales?
    [     ]
    A. She gave them the names "Salt" and "Pepper".
    B. She swam with them.
    C. She got close to touch them
    D. She took photos of them.

She was returning from teaching out in a small community (社区). It was a black, moonless night, and
    a heavy snow was falling.
She thought back to the time when she had first started teaching out in small communities. During those
days she had always picked up hitchhikers (搭便车者), until the day her sister told her that one of her friends
had been shot (中枪) in the head by a hitchhiker, all because she had stopped out of kindness to help him
    during a storm.
Her family didn't stop worrying about her safety over the hitchhikers until the family heard the promise:"
No more hitchhikers!" The snow that night was making her think back to this.
Then she saw a man waving. She slowed down for him, but as he ran toward the car in the dark, she
shook with fear. Yet she thought that if he was truly in need, she couldn't leave him here in this storm.
The stranger explained that his car was dead, and she told him to get in. They drove for an hour into the
next city and she took him to a telephone booth (公用电话亭). She waited until he had made a call. When he
reported back to her that a family member would soon come to pick him up, she wished him well and then left.
Tears fell on her cheeks as she drove away. It felt as though she had been holding her breath for an hour.

Teenagers Talking About "Being a Teenager"
Being a teenager is a strange and yet exciting part of life. We are faced with tough and important decisions
each and every day-decisions that will affect our lives.
                                                                                                                                                     -Katie
Being a teenager is hard. I was such a cheerful kid with a best friend and lots of good friends. I got good
marks and I was happy with my family. But since I became a teenager, things changed. Everything changed-
my family, my friends, and my grades. In fact, my whole life changed. I started worrying about my figure and
the way I looked. I started getting pimples (粉刺) all over my face. I think teenage life is harder for girls than
    for boys.
                                                                                                                                                     -Julia
Teenage years are a time when the single decision of right and wrong is based on what we see and hear.
Peer (同伴) pressure is more and more serious, and the need to "fit in" ( 顺应,适合) sometimes is more
    important than"right" decisions.
                                                                                                                                                     -Ashley
Me? I have so much pressure (压力)! Being the only child in the family, my parents say that my future is
the future of the family! My parents, who both have not gone to university, put all their efforts into me, hoping
I can bring honor to the family. I really don't want to let my parents down, and I'll study harder and try my
    best to get into university.
                                                                                                                                                  -Chen Mei
Though teenagers face many difficulties, I believe that we can all enjoy our time as "young adults"
somewhere in between the tears and the anger. Just think… ten years from now when you throw your back
out and start balding (秃顶), all you'll be saying to yourself is "What I wouldn't give to be seventeen again!"
                                                                                                                                                    -Kathy
    1. _____ thinks that teenage life is harder for girls than for boys.
    [     ]
    A. Katie
    B. Kathy
    C. Ashley
    D. Julia
    2. Ashley thinks that _____.
    [     ]
    A. to fit in is more important than right decisions
    B. decisions are not so important for teenagers
    C. being a teenager is strange and yet exciting
    D. teenagers should always make right decisions
    3. Chen Mei felt great pressure from _____.
    [     ]
    A. her neighbors
    B. her teachers
    C. her parents
    D. her classmates
