When Josephine Cooper was growing up, she learned the importance of charity from her parents. Although
they made a modest living for their family of 10, they insisted on sharing with those less fortunate.
Half a century later, Mrs. Cooper became a beloved volunteer at the San Diego Food Bank, where she
devoted herself to helping others. She organized and ran a distribution center from a church, helping it become
the organization's largest emergency food distribution center in San Diego. She was one of 25 outstanding senior
volunteers in the nation selected and invited Washington D.C. to receive the award.
"She was the main person who helped us make that program grow," said Mike Doody, former director of
the Food Bank. "She had a way of getting people to work together and to work hard. She was determined and
stubborn, but in a good way. She had a good heart." People knew her as "Grandma" because of her selflessness
and her devotion to helping hungry children and families. "She reminded people of their Grandma." Doody said.
As a widow with a young child in 1979, Mrs. Cooper was helped through a difficult financial time when the
Food Bank provided her with groceries. "She devoted her life to giving back," said her daughter, Monica Cooper. It wasn't unusual for a local church to call Mrs. Cooper to ask her to aid a needy family. "She would give people
food out of her cupboard. Sometimes we would cook a meal for a family living out of their car," Cooper said.
Although Mrs. Cooper was honored to receive the national award for her volunteer work, she said being able
to help others was her reward. She died of liver disease and kidney failure, aged 93.

Most American students go to traditional public schools. There are about 88 000 public schools all over
the US. Some students attend about 3 000 independent public schools called charter schools.
Charter schools are self-governing. Private companies operate some charter schools. They are similar in
some ways to traditional public schools. They receive tax money just as other public schools do. Charter
schools must prove to local or state governments that their students are learning. These governments provide
the schools with the agreement called a charter that permits them to operate.
Charter schools are different because they do not have to obey most laws governing traditional public
schools. Local, state or federal governments cannot tell them what to teach. Each school can choose its own
goals and decide the ways it wants to reach them. Class size is usually smaller than in traditional public schools.
The Bush Administration strongly supports charter schools as a way to re-organize public schools that are
failing to educate students. But some education agencies and unions oppose charter schools. One teachers'
union has just made public the results of the first national study comparing the progress of students in traditional
    schools and charter schools.
The American Federation of Teachers criticized the government's delay in releasing the results of the study,
which is called the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Union education experts say the study shows
that charter school students performed worse on math and reading tests than students in regular public schools.
Some experts say the study is not a fair look at charter schools because students in those schools have more
problems than students in traditional schools. Other education experts say the study results should make charter
school officials demand improved student progress.
    1. If a private company wants to operate a charter school, it must _____.
    A. try new methods of teaching
    B. prove its management ability
    C. obey the local and state laws
    D. get the government's permission
    2. Charter schools are independent because _____.
    A. they make greater progress
    B. their class size is smaller
    C. they enjoy more freedom
    D. they oppose traditional ways
    3. What's the government's attitude toward charter Schools?
    A. Doubtful.
    B. Supportive.
    C. Subjective.
    D. Optimistic.
    4. What can we learn from the text?
    A. More students choose to attend charter schools.
    B. Charter schools are better than traditional schools.
    C. Students in charter schools are well educated.
    D. People have different opinions about charter schools.
    5. It can be inferred from the text that _____.
    A. charter schools are part of the public education system
    B. one-on-one attention should be paid to students
    C. the number of charter schools will be limited
    D. charter schools are all privately financed

Just 25 years ago, the top three career hopes for young people in Britain were teacher, banker and doctor.
Now, they want to be sports star, pop star and actor, according to a survey by the Guardian newspaper.
Rachel, a character in the popular TV show Glee, may be said to speak for British teenagers. "Nowadays
being nobody is worse than being poor." he said.
Emma Brockes, a reporter with the Guardian, believes it is "the bad influence of celebrity (名人) culture"
that is to blame. "When children wanted to be doctor, it wasn't because they were really more interested in the
functions of human organs than they are now; you go where the respect is." she wrote.
It could explain why there has been such an increase in levels of anxiety and depression Dr Carlo Stranger,
of Tel Aviv University, studied the sense of self for his new book The Fear of Insigni ficance: Searching for
Meaning in the 21st Century. He told the Daily Mail that young people now are "affected by the close
connection to the global entertainment network, which has turned ranking and rating people according to wealth
and celebrity into an obsession (痴迷)."
"As humans, we naturally measure ourselves to those around us, but now we live in a global village. We are
comparing ourselves with the most 'important' people in the world and finding ourselves wanting," he said
Today, even high achievers constantly fear that they are insignificant when they compare themselves to success
    stories in the media.
The way out? Simply stop measuring your achievement through a fantasy of wealth and celebrity. Dr.
Strenger said that it is a process called "active self-acceptance through a constant search for self-knowledge
    through life".
"The fear of insignificance can only be overcome through strong individual and cultural identity over and
    above measurable achievement," he said.
    1. Nowadays, young people in Britain want to _____.
A choose jobs based on interests
    B. become famous
    C. be teacher, banker and doctor
    D. earn more money
    2. According to Emma Brockes, what causes the increasing level of anxiety?
    A. Choices of future careers.
    B. Access to the global network.
    C. Bad influences of celebrities.
    D. Endless comparison with others.
    3. Which of the following is true of Dr Carlo Strenger?
    A. He is a newspaper reporter.
    B. He is the spokesman of teenagers.
    C. He tells success stories on TV.
    D. He is against ranking people with wealth
    4. Dr Carlo Strenger suggests that young people should _____.
    A. seek active self-acceptance
    B. stick to their own dreams
    C. make great achievements
    D. search for the secret of wealth
    5. The text is mainly written to _____.
    A talk about job choices
    B. analyse a social phenomenon
    C. encourage celebrity culture
    D. introduce three famous people

The high-protein, low-carbohydrate (碳水化合物) diets many people turn to for weight loss might have
potentially harmful long-term effects on the colon, a small study indicates.
In the study, UK researchers found that a protein-heavy, low-carb diet created certain changes in the colon
that could contribute to colon cancer risk The study itself does not show whether high-protein diets really raise
the risk of any colon diseases, but the findings raise that possibility.
Diets relatively high in protein and lower in carbs have been shown to help heavy people lose weight. "People
should not be discouraged from losing weight," Dr Flint said. However, he added, they should make sure that
any weight loss plan includes adequate amounts of fiber and a high protein intake over months to years might
have ill effects on the colon.
The findings are based on 17 overweight men who followed three short-term diets: a one-week menu plan
to keep their weight; a four-week high-protein diet with reasonable amounts of carbohydrates; and a four-week
    high-protein diet low in carbs.
On average, the study found when the men were on the high-protein diets, they had higher levels of
substances known as N-nitroso compounds (亚硝基化合物) and other metabolites (代谢物) that have been
linked to cancer. And when they were on the high-protein, low-carb diet, they had lowered amounts of fiber-
originated compounds thought to be protective against cancer.
Exactly what those changes might mean for a person's health is not clear. But Flint said that the findings
suggest that people should be cautious about consuming too much protein and too little fiber over a long period.
In general, experts recommend that adults get about 28 grams of fiber per day-though it's not known whether
    that's enough for someone on a high-protein weight-loss diet.
    1. What is the best title of the text?
    A Plan a Healthy Diet
    B. Take Care of Your Colon
    C. How to Lose Weight
    D. How to Protect against Cancer
    2. The underlined word "colon" in Paragraph 1 probably refers to "_____".
    A. an organ
    B. intelligence
    C. a habit
    D. behaviour
    3. The study shows that high-protein, low-carb diets may _____.
    A. affect your mood
    B. lower cancer risks
    C. harm your body
    D. keep your figure
    4. It can be inferred from the text that _____.
    A. we shouldn't take the study seriously
    B. weight problems are hard to solve
    C. it is better to follow a low-carb diet
    D. people should be cautious to lose weight
    5. The author is intended to _____.
    A. advise how to lose weight
    B. introduce a scientific finding
    C. describe a research process
    D. talk about healthy diets

[1] E-mail may be the most important, unique method for communicating and developing
relationships since the telephone. First of all, _____. Anyone who can use a word processor
can also write an e-mail message without difficulty. Secondly, it saves time and money. It
costs nothing more than your time. No paper expense, no postage, no envelope expense.
People find it familiar and safe because it is similar in many aspects to writing letters-but minus the annoyances
of addressing envelopes, licking stamps and trips to the mail box.
[2] Of all the methods for developing relationships on the Internet, e-mail is the most common-and perhaps
the most powerful. Although friendship may indeed begin in chat rooms, instant messages, blogs or other
environments, these relationships almost always expand into e-mail as a way to deepen the communication. It is
a more private, more reliable, less messy way to talk. Even when other online tools improve greatly by becoming
more effectively visual and auditory (听觉的)-as in video tele-conferencing-e-mail will not disappear. Many
people will prefer it because it is a non-visual and non-auditory form of communication. After all, we don't see
people rushing out to buy video equipment to add it to their telephone, even though that technology has been
    available for some time.
[3]E-mail is not just an electronic mail sent via the internet. It creates a psychological space in which pairs of
people-or groups of people-communicate with each other.
It creates a situation and boundary in which human
    relationships can unfold.
