I have two friends who are eager for travel, There is a part of New York's Adirondack Mountains that is
called the High Peaks. It consists of 46 mountains with the height of over 4 000 feet.
The Adirondack Mountain Club gives a small piece of land to anyone who   1   all the 46 mountains. My

Many of the 46 mountains have   3   and well-used walkways to their tops. However, others are not marked
at all. These mountains are really hard to climb   4   travelers have to bushwhack (在丛林中开道) them using
     a compass and a map.
My   5   had climbed 45 of the mountains. They had one left that was the highest, requiring bushwhacking.
They left their camp site early one   6   and walked to the foot of the mountains. When they reached the foot
they found that they had   7   their compass and the map in the camp. Rather than returning to the camp, they
decided to bushwhack without the compass and map. For nearly ten hours they walked uphill   8   heat, thick
bushes and black flies. Finally, late in the afternoon they found themselves at the top of a mountain. They were
exhausted but excited. But the excitement   9   disappeared. They saw another higher mountain when they

They had to  11  4 months to climb the right mountain because it was also the remotest one.

In modern societies the media is full of pictures of "ideal (理想的) bodies". The "perfect" male is handsome,
tall and muscular and their "perfect" female equivalent is beautiful, firm and seemingly impossibly thin. These
"perfect" people are seen to have happiness, wealth and partners. The hidden message is "be like this and you
can have these things, too". This is what creates the pressure in most people-aspiring to these idealized body
images. We want these things and we think this is the way to get them. This pressure affects a lot of men and
women and, increasingly, boys and girls.
Many people ignore the fact that the idealized body images that surround them are just that idealized and
actually impossible for most of us. This can lead to poor self-esteem (自尊) and lack of confidence.
Remember the vast majority of people don't have perfect bodies. It doesn't actually mean you can't have the
positive things. The biggest myth is there are many ways to be attractive beyond the stereotype, It's certainly
not always the best-looking person that gets the girl or guy.
Most of us are much more likely to talk and get to know somebody who is friendly and approachable rather
than a more physically attractive self-centered person. Recognize your advantages and make the most of them
rather than dwell on imperfections. Your attitude towards yourself makes a big difference. Lack of confidence
in your appearance can lead you to behave in defensive ways that appear unfriendly, and this behavior is likely
to put people off rather than your appearance.
Believing in yourself and feeling good about your appearance will help automatically send off more positive
signals of yourself. So don't waste time trying to be a second-class somebody else but get on with being a first-
    class you!
    1. What do we know about "ideal bodies"?
    A. They are perfect male and female models created by modern media.
    B. They are not real men and women but something in the pictures.
    C. They are believed to represent wealth, power and happiness.
    D. They are one of the sources of jealousy for many ordinary people.
    2. What is the mistake most people make when they look at the ideal bodies?
    A. Most people want to be as wealthy and happy as the ideal bodies.
    B. Most people think that it is the best way to achieve their personal goals.
    C. Most people use those ideal bodies as examples for their children.
    D. Most people ignore the fact that ideal bodies are impossible for them.
    3. From the passage we probably know that _____.
    A. physically attractive people are more welcomed by others
    B. people full of confidence will be attractive to those around
    C. ideal bodies are the only type of people that will be loved
    D. most people with ideal bodies behave in a defensive way
    4. What is the proper attitude to your appearance?
    A. Be proud of it, if you are good-looking.
    B. Cry over it, if you are an ugly-looking guy.
    C. Make the best of your appearance to make profits.
    D. Be confident, whether you are good-looking or not.
    5. What does the last sentence of the passage imply?
    A. It is waste of time to imitate those perfect people. Do try to be yourself.
    B. You are always the best and all other people are the second class.
    C. It is better to be a second class of others than a first class of yourself.
    D. It is impossible to be both a second class somebody and a first-class you.

I used to know nothing about fairy tales. To improve my reading skills, my mother gave me books that
are a little difficult for me to understand. I didn't even know that fairy tales existed until I attended public
school at the age of eight. Of course once I found out about books of this type, I would read them as quickly
    as I could.
Again and again, I begged my mother to take me to the library and let me choose a few. Finally, my
request was granted (允许). After our return from the library, I started reading them eagerly and energetically,
one after another. And I tried to put myself in the female character's shoe. I found she had to suffer before
the handsome prince came to her rescue, and then they would live happily ever after.
I asked my mother why she never let me know about fairy tales. Looking straight in my eyes, she told me
that life is not like fairy tale. There are good and bad things that will happen through life. At the end, though,
there is not a man that will come and "save" us. We do not need savings; we instead want someone in our lives
to share those good moments and bad ones; we want someone we can rely on and also they can rely on us.
Life is not about "happy ever after".
What then is life about, mom? Life is the finding things. He holds your hands and says "come with me"
and you live, laugh and love together. But things are not going to be perfect. You still have to face difficulties
together, working hard for your relationship.
    1. Before the age of eight, the author _____.
    A. received no formal education
    B. took no interest in reading books
    C. didn't read any books of fairy tales
    D. was forced to improve her reading skills
    2. What happened to the author after she attended public school?
    A. She started to like reading.
    B. She was crazy about fairy tales.
    C. Her mother always took her to the library.
    D. Her mother didn't allow her to read books of fairy tales.
    3. What's the author's understanding of fairy tales at first?
    A. They reflect part of the real world.
    B. They are unreal but worth reading.
    C. The major characters always have a happy ending.
    D. The major characters will be rewarded for their kindness.
    4. How does the author' mother like fairy tales?
    A. A must for her kid.
    B. Unnecessary for her kid.
    C. Easy for her kid to understand.
    D. Helpful in building her kid's character.
    5. The author's mother intends to explain that _____.
    A. life is not perfect
    B. no pains, no gains
    C. life is about sharing
    D. one needs to live on his/her own

The old belief that the universe never changes is quite wrong. Even before the invention of the telescope,
astronomers noticed that bright stars suddenly appeared in the sky and then later disappeared. These stars
were called "novae" because they were thought to be new. In fact we now know that they are really old stars
    which are slowly dying.
Novae are old stars which are slowly dying. As they do so they let out huge clouds of material, sometimes
as large as the earth, and these explode into space at a speed of about 8 000 000 kilometers per hour. When
this happens, the hotter parts of the star become visible, and this is why novae are so bright. Although the
explosions are so huge on a human scale, they only consume a small part of the dying star's energy. The death
is a slow one and the star may continue to explode for thousands of years. Indeed, there are even some stars
which explode once every two weeks.
There are other old stars which do not die slowly, but are completely destroyed by one great explosion.
These are known as "supernovae". The explosion of a supernovae is equivalent to about a million, million,
million, million hydrogen bombs going off at the same time. Just before the explosion the star's density becomes
very great and it spins at a very high speed. A matchbox of materials taken from the star at that time would
weigh about 1 000 tons and the star would be turning at about 16 000 000 kilometers per hour. The explosion
itself occurs suddenly, in the interval of a minute, but the supernovae continues to shine long after the event.
One supernovae which Chinese astronomers observed in 1054 can still be seen by us today. It has been shining
for at least nine hundred years.
    1. Novae were originally thought to be _____.
    A. stars that disappear suddenly
    B. stars that explode
    C. new stars
    D. dying stars
    2. Supernovae are different from novae because _____.
    A. they are dying stars
    B. they die gradually
    C. they can be seen from the earth
    D. they explode suddenly
    3. "As they do so" (line 1, Paragraph 2) means _____.
    A. as they let out clouds of material
    B. as they are slowing dying
    C. as they explode into energy
    D. as they consume the star's energy
    4. The death of a novae is slow because _____.
    A. each novae only explodes once every two weeks
    B. the explosion may continue for thousands of years
    C. each explosion only consumes a little energy of the star
    D. the novae may continue to shine long after the explosion
    5. A matchbox of material taken from a supernovae weigh 1 000 tons because _____.
    A. the star spins at a very high speed
    B. the density of the star is very great
    C. the star explodes all of a sudden
    D. the star gives off a lot of material

Not only college students but also high school students can apply for an internship (实习) in summer
vacation. An internship is a very good opportunity for getting trained in a field of students' choices. Summer
internships for high school students in fact provide an easy way by which the students come to know how an
organization actually operates. The internship helps them to increase their knowledge's depth. It is an efficient
way of learning communication skills and this kind of job helps students learn how to recognize and appreciate
    work of others.
As a high school student, you can try for full or part-time internships and you can choose paid or unpaid
positions. If you want to apply for a paid internship, at first you're required to make a decision about what you
want to do. Students interested in home of office decoration can approach an interior (室内的) designing firm
or students who are fond of photography or acting can approach an advertising firm. You may consult your
teachers as they'll be able to guide you in the best way in this regard.
Then you need to make preparations for internship interviews carefully by studying internship interview
questions. You need to prepare a proper resume that will contain your educational qualification and information
on what you're studying. While applying, you need to mention the purpose of your internship application and
you are expected to explain how you can deliver a good performance at your workplace.
Now when it comes to the amount you are going to earn, you should be satisfied with whatever you are
getting. The certificate earned after the successful competition of the internship is much more valuable.
Unpaid internships are as valuable as paid internships. They are available in innumerable fields like animal
care, computer science, entertainment (amusement parks, national parks) and not-for-profit social services,
    etc.

and required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
If pollution continues to increase at the present rate, formation of aerosols (微粒) in the atmosphere will
cause the start of an ice age in about fifty years' time. This conclusion, reached by Dr S.I. Rassool and Dr S.
    H. Schneider, of the united States Goddard space flight center, answers the apparently conflicting questions
of whether an increase in the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere will cause the earth to warm up or
increasing the aerosol content will cause it to cool down. The Americans have shown conclusively that the
    aerosol question is dominant.
Two conservationists (环境保护主义者) have been the possibility that interfering with the environment
might lead to the planet's becoming unbearably-hot or cold. One of these conservationists has now been laid,
because it seems that even an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to eight times its
present value will produce an increase in temperature of only 20℃, which would take place over several
thousand years. But the other problem, now seems larger than ever.
Aerosols are collections of small liquid or solid particles (微粒) disappeared in air or some other medium.
The particles are all so tiny that each is composed of only a few hundred atoms. Because of this they can float
in the air for a very long time. Perhaps the most commonly experienced aerosol is industrial smog of the kind
that used to be seen in London in the 1950s and is an even greater problem in Los Angeles today. These
collections of aerosols reflect the sun's heat and thereby cause the earth to cool.
Within fifty years, if no steps are taken to curb the spread of aerosols in the atmosphere, a cooling of the
earth by as much as 3.5℃ seems unavoidable. If that lasts for only a few years it would start another ice age,
and because the growing ice caps at each pole would themselves reflect much of the sun's radiation it would
probably continue to develop even if the aerosol layer were destroyed.
