Mr. smith taught eighth-grade science. On the first day of class, he gave us a(an) 1 about a creature called the cattywampus, an animal that 2 during the Ice Age. He passed around a skull (头骨) as he talked. We all took notes and 3 had a test. When he returned my paper, I was 4 . There was a big red "×" through 5 of my answers. I had failed. There 6 have been some mistake! I had written down what Mr. Smith said. Then I 7 that everyone in the class had failed. What had happened? "Very simple." Mr. Smith said. He had 8 all those things about cattywampus. There had 9 been any such animal. The information in our 10 was wrong. Did we expect praise for a wrong answer? We were very 11 . What kind of test was that? And what kind of teacher? "You should have figured it out", Mr. Smith said. At the very moment he was passing around that cattywampus skull, hadn't he been telling us that no trace of the animal 12 ? He had described its color and other facts he couldn't have known. He had given the animal a strange name, and we still hadn't 13 . He said that the 14 on our papers would be recorded in the grade book. And they were. Mr. Smith said he hoped we would learn something from this 15 . Teachers and notebooks are not very 16 . In fact, no one is. He told us not to let our minds go to sleep and to 17 up if we ever thought he or the textbook was wrong. I haven't made any great scientific discoveries, 18 Mr. Smith's class gave me and my classmates something just as important: the 19 to look people in the eye and tell them 20 wrong. | ||||

Australian scientists are trying to give kangaroo-style stomachs to cattle and sheep in order to cut the greenhouse gases they send out, which is thought to be responsible for global warming. Thanks to special bacteria in the stomachs, kangaroo flatulence (肠胃气胀) contains no methane (甲 烷) and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep which produce large quantities of the harmful gas. While the usual image of greenhouse gas pollution is a huge smokestack pushing out carbon dioxide, farm animals' passing wind contributes to a surprisingly high percentage of total emission (排放物) in some countries. "Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia is from methane from cattle and sheep," said Athol Klieve, a senior research scientist with the Queensland state government. "And if you look at another country such as New Zealand, which has got a much higher agricultural base, they are actually up around 50 percent," he said. Researchers say the bacteria also make the digestive process much more efficient and could potentially save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers. But it will take researchers at least three years to isolate the bacteria before they can even start to develop a way of transferring it to cattle and sheep. Another group of scientists, meanwhile, has suggested Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep and just eat more kangaroos. And about twenty percent of health-conscious Australians are believed to eat the national symbol already. "It's low in fat, it's got high protein levels and it's very clean in the sense that basically it's the free-range (放养的) animal," said Peter Ampt of the University of New South Wales's institute of environmental studies. |
1. The passage mainly talks about _____. |
A. a better way to prevent air pollution B. the danger of methane from farm animals C. possible solutions to protecting environment D. a recent research on global warming |
2. Scientists intend to put the bacteria into cattle and sheep in order to _____. |
A. prevent them from sending out harmful gases B. promote Australian farming C. protect Australian ecosystem D. make the most of the special bacteria |
3. Another possible solution to the problem is _____. |
A. to reduce the number of animals raised on farms B. to keep more kangaroos rather than sheep and cattle C. to eat more plants rather than beef and mutton D. to grow more trees to absorb carbon dioxide |
4. From the passage we learn that _____. |
A. it is easy to transfer the bacteria to cattle and sheep B. farm animals are to blame for global warming in some countries C. cattle and sheep produce more methane than kangaroos D. one fifth of Australians already eat their national symbol |

I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchair. Some people, old and weak, can not get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person. Then I fainted at Euro Disney due to low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First aid. I agreed to take it easy but, as I stepped towards the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the color burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it. I could not believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently. Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheelchair suddenly. Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth. "Stupid kids-they have perfectly good legs. Why can't they watch where they are going?" I thought. People stared down at me,with pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me, the better. "I am just like you!" I wanted to scream. "The only difference is you've got legs, and I have wheels." People in wheelchairs are not stupid. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they did not want to be treated. I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled. |

Standard English is that variety of English which is usually used in print, and which is normally taught in schools and to non-native speakers learning the language. It is also the variety which is normally spoken by educated people and used in news broadcasts and other similar situations. The difference between standard and non-standard, it should be noted, has nothing in principle (原理) to do with differences between formal and informal language: Standard English has informal as well as formal variants. Historically the standard variety of English is based on the London Dialect of English that developed after the Norman Conquest resulted in the removal of the Court from Winchester to London. This dialect became the one preferred by the educated, and it was developed and promoted as a model, or norm, for wider and wider parts of society. It was also the norm that was carried overseas. But not one unaffected by such export. Today, standard English is codified (编写) to the degree that the grammar and vocabulary of English are much the same everywhere in the world where English is used: difference among the local standards is really quite minor, so that the Singapore, South Africa, and Irish varieties are really very little different from one another so far as grammar and vocabulary are concerned. Indeed, standard English is so powerful that it puts a tremendous pressure on all local varieties, to the degree that many of the long-established dialects of England have lost much of their vigor (活力) and there is much pressure on them to converge (靠拢) towards the standard. This latter situation is not unique to English:it is also in other countries where processes of standardization are under way. But it sometimes creates problems for speakers who try to strike some kind of compromise between local norms and national, even super-national ones. |

3. Standard English is used in the following situations EXCEPT _____. |
A. in schools B. by educated and native speakers only C. in news broadcasts D. in print |
