After years of trying to balance work with motherhood, Karl Smith left her corporate (公司的) job behind
    to start her own business.
It's been over a decade since this mom entrepreneur (企业家) began making cakes out of her family's
kitchen. In that time, she has managed to grow Magical Moments & Elite Party Rentals into a well-developed
wedding planning and rental operation. Statistics show that these kinds of mommy-owned businesses are on
the rise. Many women say they can't find work that allows them to balance their responsibilities at home.
Indeed, according to a national study conducted by Ipsos-Reid on behalf of Microsoft Canada, fifty-four
percent of female small business owners agree that being able to work at home to raise their family was a key
reason to leave the corporate world behind.
"Being a mom entrepreneur means trading a typical 9-to-5 work week in for a more irregular routine," says
Gemma Moore, a busy mother of two who owns and operates MG Moore Designs, a design company
specializing in website, photography and print media. "Finding a business that you can build in the evenings will
allow you to spend time with your children during the day and continue your business after they go to school."
Ninety-two percent of female small business owners say that mobile equipment and computer software can
help a mom entrepreneur make her own hours and work whenever she is most productive. In fact, ninety-five
percent agree that small business owners need to be more technology-savvy than ever before. The more
technology they master, the more successfully they will run their businesses.
"Balance is a key aspect for most entrepreneurs, but this is especially true for women," says Ruth Bastedo,
President, Women Entrepreneurs of Canada (WEC). "Entrepreneurs recognize that today's technology can help
them to find work/life balance while still providing them with the tools and materials they need to grow their
    businesses more effectively.
    1. Many female employees left their corporate jobs in order to _____.
    A. master more and more technology
    B. support their families in a better way
    C. look after their children more carefully
    D. carry out their responsibilities as housewives
    2. What can we know about Gemma Moore from the passage?
    A. She has two companies of her own.
    B. She was once doing trade business.
    C. She does not work in the daytime.
    D. She can arrange her time more properly.
    3. The underlined part "be more technology-savvy" (in Paragraph 5) probably means "_____".
    A. save more hours for technology
    B. spend less money on technology
    C. have a better knowledge of technology
    D. find better balance in technical field
    4. The passage mainly tells us that _____.
    A. most women can hardly find suitable work
    B. new technology can help women to find work
    C. Karl Smith has started her own business at home
    D. mommy-owned businesses can balance work and life

Anyone who experienced wet weather this summer will not be surprised to learn that this was the fourth
year running that the UK suffered from a wet summer, which has never happened before in modem rainfall
    records dating back to 1914.
This summer was only slightly wetter than usual, though-the UK had 248. 5 mm (9. 78 inches) summer
rainfall, 10 percent above average, according to Met Office figures.
The rainfall average over the whole country showed an interesting weather picture, though. The rain
tended to come down in big showers, setting off flash floods. As a result, East Anglia in eastern UK had its
third wettest August with more than double the normal rainfall, and the South East had one of its dullest
Augusts, with only two-thirds its usual sunshine. And yet both these areas had been dry and sunny for the
previous five months and seemed to be heading for long-lasting drought (干旱).
Western and northwestern areas had the complete opposite, though-extremely wet in July, followed by a
dry August. Remarkably, the North West had suffered from such long-lasting drought that it led to bans on
    using hosepipes (软水管).
Although some weather companies predicted an extremely hot barbecue summer, it was only 0.6℃ above
average across the UK. Even so, for the first half of this summer Glastonbury enjoyed a mud-free festival and
Wimbledon remained hot and dry. It may not have broken any temperature records, but there were plenty of
    barbecues this summer.
    1. There was a lot of rainfall this August in _____.
    A. East Anglia
    B. western UK
    C. northwestern UK
    D. Wimbledon
    2. What made the South East seem to have long-lasting drought?
    A. The small amount of sunshine in August.
    B. The wettest August of the third year running.
    C. The extremely hot weather with too much rainfall.
    D. The continuous five months of dry and sunny weather.
    3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage?
    A. People in Glastonbury celebrated a mud festival freely.
    B. Some weather companies did not give an accurate forecast.
    C. The temperature this summer was much higher than average.
    D. The extreme hot weather this summer led to fewer barbecues.

The Mother Goose stories, so well known to children all over the world, are commonly said to have been
written by a little old woman for her grandchildren. According to some people, she lived in Boston, and her
real name was Elizabeth Vergoose. Her son-in-law, a printer named Thomas Fleet, was supposed to have
published the famous nursery stories and rhymes (押韵诗) in 1719. However, no copy of this book has ever
been found, and most scholars doubt the truth of this story-and doubt, moreover, that Mother Goose was ever
a real person. They point out that the name is a direct translation of the French "Mere L'oye'. In 1697 the
Frenchman Charles Perrault published the first book in which this name was used. The collection contains
eight tales, including"Sleeping Beauty", "Cinderella", and "Puss in Boots". But Perrault did not originally make
up these stories; they were already quite popular in his day, and he only collected them.
In 1729 there appeared an English translation of Perrault's collection, Robert Samber's Histories or Tales
of Past Times, Told by Mother Goose (London, 1729), which introduced "Sleeping Beauty", "Little Red Riding-
hood", "Puss in Boots", "Cinderella" and other Perrault's tales to English-speaking audiences. These were fairy
tales(童话). John Newbery published a book of English rhymes, Mother Goose's Melody, or, Sonnets for the
Cradle (London, undated, 1765), which switched the focus from fairy tales to nursery rhymes, and in English
this was until recently the primary meaning for Mother Goose. A book of poems for children entitled Mother
Goose's Melody was published in England in 1781, and the name"Mother Goose" has been associated with
    children's poetry ever since.
    1. What was thought to have happened in 1719?
    A. Thomas Fleet published the Mother Goose stories.

As demand for power and fuel grows steadily in the coming decades, we must consider every possible
energy source (来源) at hand if we're to meet the world's needs. And because clean natural gas is found in
great plenty, there is little doubt that it will play a major role on the world energy stage in this century, much
like oil did in the last. But, like oil, gas reserves are concentrated in just a few places in the world, usually
far from where they're needed most. And that's only part of the challenge. The world has had well over 100
years to search for oil and to build the necessary facilities (设施) to bring it to market; the natural gas facilities,
particularly when it comes to liquefied (液化) natural gas (LNG), is not nearly as developed.
So what needs to be done? On the supply side, producing nations need policies that allow for better
development of their natural gas in an open, stable business environment, not one in which the rules of
the game change without warning. The governments of consuming nations, on the other hand, must make
policies for sustainable (可持续的) development to ensure they'll have enough supplies in the future. That
means building the related facilities, including LNG stations. This, in turn, will require coastal areas to allow
these necessary, but not necessarily pretty, facilities to be built in their backyards. And energy companies
have a responsibility to be good neighbors in those areas by operating these facilities responsibly and safely.
They must also continue to put in the billions of dollars needed to build the complex transport and storage
facilities required to bring more gas to market.
Expanding and diversifying (使多样化) energy sources by using more natural gas could lead to lower
fuel prices and to greater energy security. We've taken some of the steps to get started, but we need your
help to get the rest of the way.
    1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. Gas played a major part in the 20th century.
    B. Natural gas facilities are far from satisfactory.
    C. Gas reserves are widely spread around the world.
    D. Necessary facilities are ready to bring gas to market.
    2. The underlined word "one" (in Paragraph 2) refers to _____.
    A. the gas supply side
    B. the business environment
    C. the gas consuming nation
    D. the policy for gas development
    3. Consuming nations of natural gas need to _____.
    A. change the rules of the game
    B. open markets in their backyards
    C. build pretty facilities along the coast
    D. have long-term policies for gas supply
    4. The main purpose of the passage is to _____.
    A. warn people of the lack of power and fuel
    B. discuss the importance of oil and natural gas
    C. call for better use and development of natural gas
    D. instruct people how to make use of energy sources
    5. The passage might be followed by a paragraph about _____.
    A. what kind of help you can offer
    B. where energy sources are concentrated
    C. which countries are in great need of gas
    D. what problems of energy sources we may face

    Dear editor,
I'm a student of Senior Three of a middle school in Fujian Province. I'd like to tell you my opinion about
a kind of common behavior I have noticed. It seems that many students enjoy listening to MP3 players while
    doing other things. ________________________________________________________________________
