Mr and Mrs Brown were going abroad for their holiday. They had a dog called Blackie which they were
very fond of, but they could not take him abroad with them, so they looked for a good place to leave him in

To swim across the English Channel takes at least nine hours. It's hard work and it makes you short of
breath. To fly over the channel takes only twenty minutes as long as you're not held up at the airport, but
it's an expensive way to travel. You can travel by hovercraft (气垫船) if you don't mind the noise and that
takes forty minutes. Otherwise, you can go by boat, if you remember your sea-sickness pills. All these means
of transport have their problems, and the weary (厌烦的) traveler often dreams of being able to drive to
France in his own car. "Not possible, you say. Well, wait a minute. People are once again considering the
idea of a channel tunnel or bridge." This time, the great London Council (议会) is looking into the possibility
of building a channel link straight to London. A bridge would cost far more than a tunnel, but you would be
able to by rail or by car on a bridge, yet a tunnel would provide a rail link only.
Why is this idea being discussed again? Is Britain realizing the need for links with Europe as a result of
joining EEC (欧洲经济共同体)? Well, perhaps, the main reason, though, is that a tunnel or bridge would
reach the twenty square kilometers of London's discussed dockland (船坞). A link from London to the
continent would stimulate (刺激) trade and revitalize (使重新具有活力) the port, and would make London
a main trading center in Europe. With a link over the Channel, you could buy your fish and chips in England
and be able to eat them in France while they are still warm!
    1. The weary traveler thinks the best way to cross the Channel is _____.
    [     ]
    A. by swimming
    B. in his own car
    C. by air
    D. by hovercraft
    2. According to the passage, a link from London to the continent would be _____.
    [     ]
    A. necessary for its trade
    B. important for its politics
    C. useful for its industry
    D. helpful for its culture
    3. The main idea of the passage is _____.
    [     ]
    A. how to develop the trade of London
    B. when to cross the Channel
    C. how to get to Europe from London more conveniently
    D. what to do in the developing of traveling

Like most July days, it was hot. I stepped into a tiny ice-cream shop to cool off with a chocolate ice-cream.
It was an old-time store with little round tables and chairs.
As I entered, I found a very old woman bent over a table near the door. Her back was so badly twisted by
some sadness that her face nearly touched the table top. I sat down facing her a couple of tables away.
"Poor woman," I thought, "what does she get out of life? Why God let people live so long past their prime
    (盛年)?"
As I thought, another aged lady entered the shop and sat down with her. Soon the two of them were talking
about childhood days. They talked of how little the shop had changed in 70 years ……In minutes, the two of
them were trembling with laughter. I looked again at the first woman, then in the mirror on a nearby wall,
    catching a picture of myself.
I was wearing a dirty shirt.
She was well dressed in white, her hands sparking with gold rings.
         I was gloomy (愁闷的)
         She was laughing, smiling.
         I sat alone.
She was sharing the day with a good friend.
I was secretly worried about getting old
She was old, but it wasn't hurting her.
As I left the shop, I thought of my foolish question about God letting people live past their prime. Why,
that woman was more alive, more sensitive (敏感的) to life than I was. Age has not bent her spirit.
    1. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?
    [     ]
    A. To tell us the life of old people.
    B. To show the difference between the old and the young.
    C. To show that old age does not mean doing short of spirit.
    D. To make the reader have a pity on the old people.
    2. The writer implies all of the following except that _____.
    [     ]
    A. the old lady was very lonely and sad
    B. he had more problems than the old lady
    C. the old lady had lived a full and satisfying life
    D. the old lady had learned to enjoy the simple things in life
    3. Which of the following is the conclusion the writer made about the old lady?
    [     ]
    A. She was to be pitied for her old age.
    B. She considered the young man pitiable.
    C. She was more alive and sensitive to life than the writer.
    D. People should not be allowed to live when they are too old.

Most families in China hoped their single children will have a happy future, so they are very strict in their
children. So do teachers in school! Many children are given such much homework that they have hardly any
spare time to have sports. The children are forbidden to do anything but to study! No wonder so many children
are tiring of lessons. Some even attack or kill his parents and teachers! I believe many people have already read
this kind of news in newspapers or magazine. Shouldn't we draw lesson from the cases? Now our government
