Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many
people on the island had a disease called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find
    a cure.
At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (细菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some
chickens. He didn't eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite
surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed
the food most Javanese ate-refined white rice (精炼米). When he fed them with unrefined
rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an
important discovery - that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were
named vitamins (维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had
actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found
to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person's food.
Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough
vitamins from the food they eat. If they don't, they can also take vitamin pills.

Harvard University is on the both sides of the Charles River. The oldest institution
of higher learning in the United States was founded in 1636. In 1638 it was named for John
Harvard, its first founder. During the 1640s the college was enlarged although it was short
of money. Meant to be an institution for the education of Puritan ministers (清教牧师),
it grew to be an institution of general education (普通教育), and new and more subjects and
policies (政策) were introduced. In the 18th century, particularly under John Leverett

教的) color decreased. In its early years, the college was largely supported by the English
colony and the New England community as a whole, but support soon came in the form of gifts,
and in 1823 the state money was received for the last time. Under Charles W. Eliot, the
college became a great modern university. Its basic courses improved and enlarged, the
graduate school was set up for those who finished their four-year undergraduate study, and

has schools of business administration (1908), medical (1782), public health (1922), and dental
health (1941). Radckiffe college for women is connected with Harvard; its students are
taught by Harvard professors and receive diplomas given by Harvard. The university 1ibrary,

Department stores sell ready-to-wear clothing, which is also called ready-made clothing.
Such clothing is made in fixed sizes. Those people who find that ready-made clothing fits
them well can save money by buying it. Most often, People do not fit exactly into a producer's
size. Their clothing must be changed to make it fit better. However, most changes are not
very expensive. The small cost of most changes means that ready-made clothing can meet the
    needs of most customers.
Those who can afford it often get someone to design (设计) and make their clothing. Such
clothing is called custom-made. The person who makes it measures (测量) the customer, and
then sews it so that it fits perfectly. Changes are not needed. Custom-made clothing is largely
sewn by hand, has better quality, better material, and is of the style you have chosen. Of course,
it costs much more than ready-to-wear clothing. You need to pay the difference for the special
fitting and better skill that you are receiving. This often means that you spend double or mor
than you would for a ready-made garment.
Custom-made clothing is not always that much better than ready-made clothing. It costs more
partly because only one garment has been made, just for you. Companies that produce ready-made
products make thousands of garments at a time. This means they can buy large amounts of material.
Workers cut each size by the hundreds. Companies work out ways to make the garments, quickly
by machine and pay workers according to their skill. Thus they can sell the finished products at a
low price while still making money. Most of the clothing sold in the United States is made in this way.
Customers gain from the lower prices which are made possible by mass production. It may or may
    not give them high quality.
    1. According to the passage, people who buy ready-made clothing _____.
    [     ]
    A. wish to make changes
    B. can fit into the sizes
    C. want to make it better
    D. will spend less money
    2. We can learn from the passage that custom-made clothing is _____.
    [     ]
    A. specially made
    B. fashionably designed
    C. chosen by few people
    D. made with difficulties
    3. Which of the following is true about ready-made clothing?
    [     ]
    A. It is of poor quality.
    B. It suits all people.
    C. It takes more time to make it.
    D. It is time-saving to make it.
    4. The purpose of the writer is _____.
    [     ]
    A. to explain why custom-made clothing costs more
    B. to show the advantages of mass production
    C. to provide information about different kinds of clothing
    D. to tell readers how to make money from ready-made clothing

Honesty comes in many forms. First there's self-honesty. Is what people see the real
article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something
I'm not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account ).
I love how singer Judy Garland put it, "Always be a first-class version of yourself,
instead of a second-class version of somebody else."
Then there's honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and
with your boss? If you've ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and
notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can't do wrong and feel right. This story
by Jeff is a good example of that:
In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn't do well.
I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped
them pass. I'd write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.
At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn't thinking about
how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn't do that anymore, because
I wasn't really helping them. They weren't learning anything, and it would only get harder
down the road. Cheating certainly wasn't helping me.
It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating
on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of
honesty is a deposit into your PBA and will build strength.
    1. Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland's words?
    [     ]
    A. Be your true self rather than follow others.
    B. Don't copy others or you can't be the first class.
    C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.
    D. Don't learn from others unless they're excellent.
    2. What does the author expect to show by Jeff's story?
    [     ]
    A. honesty can be of great help.
    B. A bad thing can be turned into a good one.
    C. Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.
    D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.
    3. In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express _____.
    [     ]
    A. one must be brave to be honest
    B. it's difficult to be honest when others are not
    C. one should be honest when making a deposit
    D. honesty in one's actions can help him in the future

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, a wise man advised, "Barbara, be
enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience." How right
    they were!
"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is
the paste that helps you hang on there when the going tough. It is the inner voice that
whispers, "I can do it!" when others shout, "No, you can't!" It took years and years for
the early work of Barara McClintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine,
to be generally accepted. Yet she didn't stop working on her experiments. Work was such a
deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.
We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder
that gives enthusiastic people such youthful air, whatever their age was. At 90, cellist
Palblo Cassls would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers
his stooped shoulders would strengthen and joy would reappear in his eyes. As author and
poet Samuei Ulman once wrote, "Years wrinkle (使起皱纹) the skin, but to give up enthusiasm
    wrinkles the soul."
Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or power. Patricia
Mellrath, retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theatre in Kansas City, was once asked
where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, "My father, a lawyer long ago told me, I never
made a dime until I stopped working for money."
If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton
was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended periods of depression that had trouble
d her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her led one critic (批评家)to say, "I'd like
    to call Layton a genius."
We can't afford to waste tears on "might-have-been". We need to turn the tears into
sweat as we go after "what-can-be". We need to live each moment whole-heartedly, which all
our senses-including pleasure in the sweet smell of a back-yard garden, the simple picture
of a six-year-old, the beauty of a rainbow.

    A. 热情
    B. 色彩
    C. 惰性

    [     ]
    A. music can arouse people's enthusiasm
    B. enthusiasm can give people energy needed to succeed
    C. enthusiasm can keep people feel young
    D. enthusiasm can keep people healthy
    3. How many examples are given in the passage to show the importance of enthusiasm?
    [     ]
    A. Three
    B. Two
    C. Four
    D. Five
    4. The author mainly wants to say that _____.
    [     ]
    A. enthusiasm people never get old
    B. enthusiasm can make you succeed and enjoy life
    C. enthusiasm is more important than experience
    D. enthusiasm can give people more success and fame.

                                                Adventure Travel
Why do people travel? Well, many people travel because they want to see other countries
and visit places that are famous, interesting or beautiful. People also travel to meet new
friends, to try new kinds of food, to experience life in other parts of the world or simply
to get away from cold weather. Yet there are other reasons why people travel. Many of
today's travelers are looking for an unusual experience and adventure travel is becoming
more and more popular. Here is a quick look at two popular activities: hiking and rafting.
                                            HIKING
Instead of spending your vacation on a bus, in a hotel or sitting on the beach, you may
want to try hiking. Hiking is a great way to travel. You will get close to nature and take
exercise at the same time. Hiking is easy to do and doesn't have to be very expensive. You
can hike close to home or travel to other places. The basic equipment you need for hiking
is simple: good shoes, clothes and backpack. You can hike in the mountains, in a forest or
along a river. You can also go for a hike in the city.
Hiking is fun and exciting, but you shouldn't forget safety. Here are some basic tips
    for successful hiking:
        ★ Hike with your friends.
★ Tell someone where you are going.
★ Bring water and good map.
★ Watch out for dangers, such as spiders, snakes or poisonous plants.
★ Wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
★ Bring a cell phone if you have one.
                                            Rafting
Another exciting adventure is rafting. A raft is a small boat that you can use to
paddle (划桨) down rivers and streams. Rafting is a good way to experience nature. If you
want a normal rafting trip, choose a quiet stream or river that is wide and has few fallen
trees or rocks. If you are looking for more excitement, you may want to try white-water
rafting. White-water rafting is more adventurous and difficult than normal rafting. It is
done on rivers and streams where the water moves quickly. You have to be careful not to
hit rocks, trees and other dangers. The name "white-water" comes from the fact the water
in these rivers and streams looks white when it moves quickly.
As with hiking, you should always think about your safety and wear good clothes. You
also need to learn the basic skills of rafting, such as how to get in and out of the raft.
You should not go rafting unless you know how to swim, and you should always wear a life
    jacket.
