Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to infIuence behavior.
One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards.
Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in
    Sweden did the study.
They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner's
Dilemma. The game is based on the tension between the interests of an individual and a group. The
students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain
equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the
punisher. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation.
The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that
rewarded it the least. The study appeared last month in the journal Science.
The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on
violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than, eight hundred
children were ages two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children were
ages five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results
with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children
    whose parents did not.
The study says the IQs of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than
those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points. The more they are spanked,
    the slower their mental development.
    1. According to the first study, we mainly infer that _____.
    [     ]
    A. the game is called Prisoner's Dilemma
    B. the less a group punished itself, the lower its earnings
    C. adults are much more cooperative if rewarded
    D. the game is introduced in the journal Science
    2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the second study?
    [     ]
    A. Children's IQs has much to do with physical punishment.
    B. The study is about violence and abuse of children.
    C. The children tested were divided into groups of four.
    D. Children's mental development only relies on their IQs.
    3. What does the underlined word "spanked" refer to?
    [     ]
    A. punished.
    B. blamed.
    C. tested.
    D. praised.
    4. What might be the best title for the text?
    [     ]
    A. The Best Way to Correct Misbehavior.
    B. Punishment Is the Best Way of Education.
    C. Cooperation Is the Most Successful Behavior.
    D. Punishment or Reward: Which Works Better on Behavior?

The IEA's World Energy Outlook report says increasing demand and use of energy has to be limited.
The switch to more low-carbon energy will require an extra investment (投资) of£2.7 trillion-about 0.2%
of GDP-the IEA report said, with an average£11 spent per head worldwide on more efficient cars, buildings
and so on. The improved energy efficiency would deliver fuel-cost savings of almost£4.5 trillion.
The report says that the world energy demand will grow by l.6% per year on average between 2006 and
2030. This figure is lower than planned last year because the economic slowdown has reduced demand.
Demand for oil will rise from the current 85 m barrels (桶) per day to 106 m barrels by 2030.
Demand for coal will rise more than any other fuel-despite the environmental damage it causes-making up
more than a third of the increase in energy use.
The report claims oil will remain the world's main source of energy for many years to come even with the
rapid development of altemative renewable energy technology but the amount of oil remaining, production
costs and consumer price will remain unpredictable.
Mr. Tanaka, IEA executive director, said big international oil and gas companies would in the future have
limited chances to increase production while in contrast national companies are planned to make up about 80%
of the increase of both oil and gas production to 2030.
The report says measures to control CO2 emissions (排放) will improve energy security by reducing global
fossil-fuel energy use but this would not alarm the world's major oil producers.
"OPEC production will need to be 12 m barrels higher per day in 2030 than today. It is clear that the energy
departments will have to play the leading role in handling climate change," said Mr. Tanaka.
    1. According to the report, the switch to more low-carbon energy will _____.

    [     ]

    A. need an additional $2.7 trillion investment
    B. take two per cent of the UK's GDP
    C. cost each person in the UK $ 11 on average
    D. save about £4.5 trillion in fuel costs
    2. Which of the following will be the major energy source in the next few years?

    [     ]

    A. Oil.
    B. Coal.
    C. Gas.
    D. Bio-fuel.
    3. According to Mr. Tanaka, who will play the key role in dealing with climate change?

    [     ]

    A. The oil producers.
    B. The energy departments.
    C. The oil consumers.
    D. The policy makers.
    4. What's the passage mainly talking about?

    [     ]

    A. National companies in the UK should produce more oil and gas.
    B. The increasing demand and use of energy should be controlled.
    C. New efficient energy methods should be tested and widely used.
    D. Measures should be taken to alarm the world's major oil producers.

Working in the control room of the salvage vessel (求助打捞船) Seaprobe at two o'clock one morning
in 1977, Robert Ballard was shocked by a large piece of equipment that crashed onto the deck just three
feet above him. The ship shook with the force of an explosion (爆炸). A drill pipe and its attached equipment
broke and fell into the Atlantic, abruptly ending the explorer's test to find the RMS Titanic.
"I lost a lot of credibility with sponsors (赞助商), who had lent the $600 000 worth of equipment" for
the 1977 exploration. "It took me eight years to recover from that." But recover he did, despite doubt from
other scientists, failed money-raising efforts and other unfortunate happenings.
After the Seaprobe failed, Ballard says, "I had to come up with another way to search for the Titanic."
He returned to work as a U.S. Navy officer. At a time the geologist cut a deal with Navy officials: He would
offer his expertise (专业知识) if they supported the development and testing of Argo, a camera-equipped
underwater robot, and allowed him to use it for exploration.
The Navy sent Ballard and Argo to search for Thresher and Scorpion, two submarines (潜水艇) that
sank during the 1960s. Those vessels lay in waters not far from the Titanic. After having found the Scorpion
in 1985, Ballard began to look for the lost liner Titanic. And two miles down, in the dark sea at 49°56' W,
    41°43' N, he found it.
The oceanographer, who later found the German battleship Bismarck and the liner Lusitania, says simply,
"Failure and success are bedfellows, so I'm ready to fail."
Ballard's worked in the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography. Students will join
him on his latest research-exploring ancient trade routes in the Black and Mediterranean seas.
    1. Ballard failed his attempt to find the RMS Titanic mainly because _____.
    [     ]
    A. an explosion damaged the salvage vessel greatly
    B. the equipment for the exploration broke and sank
    C. the sea condition was too terrible for the exploration
    D. something was wrong with the drill pipe
    2. What influence did the failure have on Ballard?
    [     ]
    A. Sponsors wouldn't provide him with money any more.
    B. He became a navy officer in charge of the research on Argo.
    C. It took him eight years to seek support from other scientists.
    D. He had to work in a university to launch the program once more.
    3. The U.S. Navy decided to help Ballard because _____.
    [     ]
    A. They wanted to test the use of the Argo
    B. They also wanted to find the RMS Titanic
    C. They were the sponsors of the 1977 expedition
    D. Ballard would offer them his expert skill and knowledge
    4. Where did Ballard find the RMS Titanic?
    [     ]
    A. Near the submarine Thresher.
    B. Near the German battleship Bismarck.
    C. Just next to the liner Lusitania.
    D. Not far from the submarine Scorpion.

The Pitcairn Islands, a group of four volcanic islands, are a British overseas territory (殖民地). The names
of the islands are Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno; Only Pitcairn Island, the second largest, is inhabited
    (有人居住的).
Henderson Island is a coral (珊瑚) island raised above the South Pacific Ocean, covering about 67% of the
territory's total land area. It has an area of 37.3 square kilometres, measuring 9.6 kilometres long and 5.1
kilometres wide. In 1988, it became a World Heritage Site (世界遗产保护区) because of its bird life.
All the four kinds of special land bird (Henderson Crake, Henderson Fruit Dove, Henderson Lorikeet and
Henderson Reed-warbler) can only be seen on Henderson Island. There are also fifteen non-local seabirds.
Other local things include nine kinds of plants, four kinds of land snails, and one butterfly (the only kind on
    the island).
Although no people live on Henderson Island, evidence suggests that a small Polynesian group lived here
between the 12th and 15th centuries until it disappeared. The reasons for the disappearance are unknown,
but are probably related to the similar disappearance of the Poly-nesians on Pitcairn Island, on whom the
Hendersonians would have depended for many of the basics of the life.
On January 29, 1606. Henderson island was discovered by Portuguese sailor Pedro Queiros, who named
it San Joao Baptista. On January 17, 1819 the island was rediscovered by British Captain Henderson of the

King, sailing aboard the Elizabeth, landed on the island to find the king's flag already flying. He scratched

In the early 1980s, American Arthur Ratliff expressed interest.in buying Henderson island and establishing
a small settlement. But the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office refused it at last, after environmentalist
groups persuaded them to protect the natural ecology and environment of the island which was later named
    a World Heritage Site.
Pitcairners have made regular trips to Henderson to harvest the wood of trees. Usually they make

From the beginning of human history, people have used oils from seeds and nuts. Most of the time these
oils are used as food, especially in cooking. But sometimes they have other uses. For example, oils are used
in paint and in cleaning products like soap.
Oil is separated from seeds by using pressure. A machine called a press is often used.
The first step in pressing the oil from seeds is to crush the seeds between two stones. The crushed seeds
are then put into a cloth bag and the bag is hung up. Some of the oil will flow out of the bag and can be
    collected.
But some oil will remain in the crushed seeds inside the bag. The easiest way to get the rest of the oil out
is to place heavy rocks on the crushed material.
Another method is to place several cloth bags on top of each other in a box. Then a long wooden stick is
used to slowly push a heavy cover down on the bags. Great pressure is produced in this way. Much greater
pressure can be produced by using a machine, a hydraulic jack (液压千斤顶). The greater the pressure, the
    more oil win be produced.
Small presses are important in areas where electricity or gasoline cannot be used. They are also a good
way to test if a local market for oil exists.
Small batch presses can be made of local materials. Their cost is low. They are not difficult to operate.
And they are easy to repair. The small presses produce good quality oil. But the work is hard. And getting
all the oil from the seeds can be difficult.
If there is a large supply of seeds, then hand-operated presses may not be enough to support a business.
Large, powered presses that can operate all day are needed.
