Tess, eight, always heard her parents talking about her brother, Andrew. He was very sick and they were
completely out of money. Only a very costly surgery could save him but no one would lend them money. She
heard Daddy said with desperation, "Only a miracle can save him."
Counting all her coins in her bedroom and carefully bringing the coins, Tess slipped out the door and made
her way six blocks to Drug Store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist (药剂师) to give her some attention
but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat
with the most disgusting sound she could produce. No good. Finally she took a coin and banged (发出砰声)
it on the counter. That did it! "And what do you want?" the pharmacist asked. "I'm talking to my brother from
Chicago whom I haven't seen for ages," he said without waiting for a reply to his question. "Well, let's talk
about my brother," Tess answered. "He's really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle."
''Pardon?" said the pharmacist, "Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says
only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?" "No miracle here." the pharmacist said.
"Please, just tell me how much it costs." Tess pleaded. The pharmacist's brother bent down and asked, "What
kind of a miracle does your brother need?". "I don't know," Tess replied. "Ijust know he's really'sick and
Mommy says he needs an operation." "How much do you have?" asked the man from Chicago. "One dollar and
eleven cents." Tess answered shyly. "Well, what a coincidence (巧合)!" smiled the man, "That's the exact price.
Take me to where you live. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need."
That man was Mr. Carlton. The operation was completed without charge and soon Andrew was home again
"That surgery," her Mom whispered, "was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?" Tess
smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost.

Barack Obama makes his first trip to Asia as president this week, leaving behind a host of domestic
problems with the visit that recognizes the region's economic and diplomatic importance. "Obama's trip
includes stops in Japan, Singapore, China and South Korea, and his message will be simple," says Nicolas
Lardy at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, "Well, I think his broadest objective is to
convince Asians that the United States is fully committed to the region that we have an agenda that's much
broader than they saw over the past eight years of the very heavy focus on counter terrorism."
Obama's first stop is Japan, where he meets with the new Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama who has
promised to steer a diplomatic course more independent of Washington. While Japan is seen as a getting-to-
know-you stop, when Obama heads to the Singapore for the APEC meeting, he will likely face pressure on
trade. "Many Asians are concerned about what US trade policy will be, and they've been somewhat alarmed
by the fact that the president really hasn't set out very much revision for what US trade policy is in his
    administration."
But the critical leg of the trip will come in China, his third stop where Obama will have to navigate the
complex relationship with the country that is the largest holder of US debt. "As you say, you know, if you
owe the bank one dollar, it's your problem, if you owe the bank, you know, 3 million dollars, it's the bank's
problem, so it's similar with China. I mean they have no interest in trying to use the influence with us, because
eventually, they're the one that they own all those dollars."
Also on the table will be North Korea and Iran's nuclear ambitions as well as cooperation on Afghanistan.
With Obama enjoying sky high popularity ratings in the countries he is visiting, concrete results may be
beside the point, given that Obama is still in his firs office, analysts say this trip is mostly about laying the
    ground work for the future.
    1. From the second paragraph, we can infer that _____.
    [     ]
    A. Japan and Singapore will give America some pressure on trade
    B. Japan has not been the closest friend of America
    C. Japan decides not to rely on America too much
    D. Japan is concerned about what US trade policy will be
    2. The word "leg" in the third paragraph probably means _____.
    [     ]
    A. the two long parts of your body that your feet are joined to
    B. one of the parts of a football match that is played in two halves
    C. a part of a long journey or process that is done one part at a time
    D. one of the upright parts that supports a piece of furniture
    3. What can you infer about China's relation with America in the third paragraph?
    [     ]
    A. It will hurt China if the value of the dollar falls.
    B. China will sell all its shares in US national debt.
    C. China is US's overseas bank where US can borrow money.
    D. China will not be the largest debt holder of US.
    4. The author develops the passage mainly _____.
    [     ]
    A. by cause and effect
    B. by examples
    C. by order in time
    D. by comparison

Attractive fathers do not pass their looks onto their sons but they will hand their good looks down to their
    daughters, research shows.
In a study of family photographs, Professor David Perrett and Elisabeth Cornwell-now at the University of
Colorado have found that while both father and mother can influence the attractiveness of their daughters, the
couple's good looks do not necessarily contribute to the attractiveness of their son as an adult. Handsome men
with masculine (阳刚的) looks are likely to pass on masculine features, but not facial attractiveness.
The theory suggests it is not unusual for attractive parents to produce a beautiful daughter while failing to
pass on the same good looks to a son.
While many celebrity mothers produce beautiful daughters-such as Goldie Hawn and her daughter Kate
Hudson or Jerry Hall and her daughter Georgia-the same is not necessarily true of celebrity fathers. Sean
Stewart, the son of Rod Stewart and his first wife Alan, would probably be judged less attractive than his model
sister Kimberly. "We can't see a strong relationship between the parents' attractiveness and the sons. If the
parents are supermodels, their daughters will be lookers," Perrett said.
Prof Perrett said it has previously been suggested that a woman could increase her own reproductivets (繁
殖的) success by choosing a good-looking man whose genes would be passed onto male children. But the new
study, published in the current edition of the journal Animal Behaviour, disagrees with the theory.
He said:"When we looked at women's faces, we found clear evidence that attractiveness passed from both
father and mother to daughter. For the male line, we find that facial masculinity follows the rule 'like father like
son'. Masculine dads have masculine sons. But we did not find any evidence that facial attractiveness is passed
    from father to son."
    1. Which of the followings is TRUE according to the passage?
    [     ]
    A. Father and mother can influence the attractiveness of their children.
    B. Handsome fathers with masculine looks will not pass on masculine features.
    C. There is a strong relationship between the parents' attractiveness and the daughters.
    D. If the parents are supermodels, their sons will be good-looking.
    2. What does the word "lookers" in the fourth paragraph most probably mean?
    [     ]
    A. On-lookers.
    B. Models.
    C. Beauties.
    D. Passers-by.
    3. How many celebrity families are mentioned in the passage?
    [     ]
    A. Three.
    B. One.
    C. Two.
    D. Four.
    4. The passage is most likely to be found in a book about _____.

    C. successful people

Traditional rubbish collection is dirty, smelly, labor-intensive, and rubbish can pile up in basements or
wooden bins. This new system does away with all that and with lots of expensive bin lorries.
"Nobody sees anything happening, there's no bins, there's no trucks on street, there's no boxes, there
is no kids on the bikes trying to fight with dust cars going up on the street. It's safe, it's clean, and it's
    healthy for everybody."
This is how it works: you sort your rubbish into special containers in your kitchen, then take the bags
to one of these. They drop down into the building's basement. Twice a day, a powerful vacuum sucks them
away to a collection centre down a single pipe. First, the food waste, then general rubbish, then stuff for
    recycling, like paper and cans.
In the past thirty years, the system's been equipped around the world, from Stockholm to Barcelona,
Disneyland to Dubai, but never in the UK. One problem: it's expensive. Local councils don't pay the cost
of equipment. The developer here next to Wembley Stadium, says it makes sense partly because this
development is the size of a small town.
"We own the entire site, the 85 acres and all the roads. And that's the fundamental that we control the
public ground. And we take a benefit of that because our public ground's going to be great as a consequence
    of this system."
"And this is where it ends up, the central collection centre. That great big green pipe is the outlet from
the underground network and laid in all the roads around here. These great big things are essentially enormous
intensive vacuum cleaner that will swirl (使旋转) the rubbish around, the air, goes off to the top. The waste
goes down to the bottom and then it is shifted to one of these containers where it can be put on to a lorry
and taken away." Environmentally, it's claimed the systems are great improvement, but it has a challenge.
    1. Which of the followings about the new collection system is WRONG according to the passage?
    [     ]
    A. High price.
    B. Labor consumption.
    C. Big size.
    D. Good safety.
    2. Which is the right order when the new system works?
    [     ]
    A. Sort rubbish-put rubbish bags in basement-suck rubbish by a vacuum-shift to containers.
    B. Put rubbish bags in basement-suck rubbish by a vacuum-sort rubbish-shift to containers.
    C. Sort rubbish-shift to containers-suck rubbish by a vacuum-put rubbish bags in basement.
    D. Suck rubbish by a vacuum-sort rubbish-shift to containers-put rubbish bags in basement.
    3. According to the passage, the challenge of the new system is _____.
    [     ]
    A. to work economically
    B. to take up the size of a small town
    C. to equip itself in the UK
    D. to be environmentally friendly

    1_____
Science is an amazing subject, but it's difficult to capture the true magic of science and contain it in a book.
For young learners, textbook science often looks like a lot of big, confusing terms that have to be memorized.
That is why sometimes children think that science is dry, boring and difficult. Textbooks can't help them
discover how exciting science really is. So find some other ways to help kids to develop a love of science.
    2_____
Instead of just reading from a book about the water cycle, air pressure, chemical changes, sound waves,
fingerprints, etc., let students experience these things instead. It's much more memorable for them to discover
a principle or fact about science on their own than it is to simply be told about it. There are great resources
online that include complete lesson plans for hundreds of activities. Afterwards, a brief discussion can bring
the principal points home to children. In addition, an explanation of any unfamiliar terms at this point will make
    a lot more sense.
    3_____
Science is all around. Taking time to look at the world and to discuss what is seen, encourages scientific
observation and a love of learning. Look at changing seasons, weather events, plants, pets, insects, the stars
and virtually everything else as an opportunity to help students learn more about science.
    4_____
Real scientists record their findings. Encourage young scientists to draw pictures and write about what they
see and do. Science isn't an isolated subject. It involves reasoning, writing, math, history, art, and more. A
journal gives students a place to record the things about science that interest them most.
    5_____
Cooking is filled with chemical reactions. Teach students about what happens when carbon dioxide bubbles
form in dough. Help them to understand mixtures by making a salad, solvents by mixing up powdered drink
mixes, colloids by making gelatin, evaporation and cloud formation by observing a boiling tea kettle. Crystals can
be observed (and grown) with salt and sugar. Liquids can be changed to solids in a freezer. The list is almost
    endless.

    Dear Steve,
You asked me to write you something about my visit the British Isles. I will tell you the culture of the
    people of the British Isles.
The culture of the British Isles is influenced by the culture of the people on the European Mainland many
centuries ago. In the fifth century, people from different part of north Europe settled in England, brought
their own culture and languages with them. Their languages formed the basis for English. Some of the native
population moved to the inland, mountainously parts of the islands, to Ireland, Scotland and Wales, which
they continued speaking their own languages. In 1066 England was conquered by the French. For the next a
few hundred years, the upper classes spoke French when the common people spoke English. The result of
this French influence was whether the English language ended up with many French words such as table,
    animal and age.
I will stop here, and hope me enjoy it.
                                                                                                                                          Best wishes,
