The Americans and Russians, at the height of the arms race, realized that if they continued in the usual
manner they were going to blow up the whole world.
One day, they sat down and decided to settle the whole argument with one dog fight. They'd spent five
years training the best fighting dog in the world and whichever side's dog won would have the right to control
the world. The losing side would have to lay down its arms.
The Russians found the biggest, meanest, Doberman and Rottweiler in the world and trained them with the
biggest meanest Siberian wolves. They selected only the biggest and strongest young dogs from each litter (窝),
killed his brothers or sisters, and gave him all the milk. They used steroids (类固醇) and trainers and after five
years came up with the biggest meanest dog the world had ever seen. Its cage needed steel bars that were three
inches and nobody could get near it.
When the day came for the fight, the Americans showed up with a strange animal. It was a nine-foot long
Dachshund. Everyone felt sorry for the Americans because they knew there was no way that this dog could
possibly last ten seconds with the Russian dog.
When the cages were opened up, the Dachshund came out and wrapped itself around the outside of the ring.
It had the Russian dog almost surrounded. When the Russian dog leaned over to bite the Dachshund's neck, the
Dachshund reached out and consumed the Russian dog in one bite. There was nothing left at the entire Russian
    dog.
The Russians came up to the Americans, shaking their hands in doubt. "We don't understand how this could
have happened. We had our best people working for five years with the meanest Doberman and Rottweiler in
the world and the biggest, meanest Siberian wolves."
"That is nothing," an American replied. "We had our best plastic surgeons (外形整容医生) working for five
years to make a crocodile look like a Dachshund."

The old man walked with a cane (拐杖) slowly into the restaurant. His poor jacket patched (打补丁)
trousers and worn-out shoes made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning breakfast crowd.
Unforgettable were his pale blue eyes that sparkled like diamonds, large rosy cheeks, and thin lips held in
    a steady smile.
He walked towards a table by the window. A young waitress watched him and ran over to him, saying,
"Here, Sir. Let me give you a hand with that chair"
Without a word, he smiled and nodded a thank you. She pulled the chair away from the table. Steadying
him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. Then she pushed
the table up close to him, and learned his cane against the table where he could reach it.
In a soft, clear voice he said, "Thank you, Miss"
"You are welcome, Sir." she replied, "My name is Mary. I'll be back in a moment. If you need anything,

Maybe you have ever seen a cross. A cross can be a piece of jewelry or an image in a painting. But do

Christians call the day that Jesus died "Good Friday". At first, it is hard to understand how a terrible day
could ever be called good. Well, the story does not end there. Jesus died and he was buried. But three days

Most rain forest lie close to equator (赤道), where the climate is often mild and there are long hours of
sunshine. The warmth of the land heats the air above, causing it to rise and tiny drops of water to fall as rain.
The rainfall can reach at least 98 inches a year. This wet, warm world with plenty of sunlight is perfect for
plants to grow, so the trees grow fast with green leaves all the year round. The trees themselves also have an
effect on the climate. They gather water from the soil and pass it out into the air through their leaves. The wet
air then forms clouds, which hang over the treetops like smoke. These clouds protect the forest from the
daytime heat and night-time cold of nearby deserts, keep temperatures fit for plant growth.
Rain forests slightly farther away from the equator remain just as warm, but they have a dry season of
three months or more when little rain falls. Tree leaves fall during this dry season and new leaves grow when
the wet season or monsoon (雨季) begins. Thus these areas are known as the "monsoon forest".
Another type of rain forest grows on tropical mountains. It is often called the "cloud forest" because clouds
often hang over the trees like fog.
The rain forest is the ideal place for the growth of many different trees. Most of them depend on animals
to eat their fruits and spread their seeds. When the fruits are eaten, the seeds inside them go undamaged through
animals, stomachs and are passed out in their droppings. The seeds lying on the forest floor then grow into
    new trees.
    1. The climate of the rain forests near the equator is _____.
    [     ]
    A. mild, wet and windy
    B. hot, rainy and foggy
    C. warm, wet and sunny

    B. there is a dry season in the cloud forest on tropical mountains
    C. clouds help the plants in the rain forest near the deserts to grow
    D. the formation of climate in the rain forest has little to do with the trees
    3. According to the passage _____ play the most important role in the spreading of seeds.
    [     ]
    A. animals
    B. droppings
