America is a country on the move. In unheard of number, people of all ages are exercising their way to
better health. According to the latest figures, 59 percent of American adults exercise regularly-up 12 percent
from just two years ago and more than double the figure of 25 years ago. Even non-exercisers believe they
would be more attractive and confident if they were more attractive.
It is hard not to get the message. The advantage of physical fitness are shown on magazine covers, postage
stamps, and television ads for everything from beauty soaps to travel books. Exercise as a part of daily life did
not catch on until the 1960s when research by military doctors began to show the health benefits of doing
regular physical exercises. Growing publicity for races held in American cities helped increase a strong interest
in the ancient sport of running. Although running has leveled off in recent years as Americans have discovered
equally rewarding-and something safer-forms of exercise, such as walking and swimming, running remains the
    most popular form of exercise.
As the popularity of exercise continues to increase, so does scientific evidence of its health benefits. The
key to fitness is exercising the major muscle group strongly enough to double the heart rate and keep it doubled
for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Doing such physical exercises three times or more a week will produce
considerable improvements in physical health in about three months.
    1. According to the passage, what was the percentage of American adults doing regular physical exercises
        two years ago?
    [     ]
    A. About 70%
    B. Nearly 60%
    C. More than 12%
    D. Almost 50%

    A. people got the message from magazine covers and postage stamps
    B. Scientific evidence of health benefits was shown on TV ads
    C. research showed their health benefits
    D. an increasing number of races were held in American cities
    3. The author's purpose in writing the last paragraph is chiefly to show us _____.
    [     ]
    A. that running stopped increasing in popularity
    B. the increase of scientific evidence of advantages of exercising
    C. that people have found other ways of exercising besides running
    D. about how to improve physical fitness
    4. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
    [     ]
    A. Different Forms of Exercise.
    B. Scientific Evidence of Health Benefits.

It was Molly's job to hand her father his brown paper lunch bag each morning before he headed off to
    work.
One morning, in addition to his usual lunch bag, Molly handed him a second paper bag. This one was
worn and held together with staples (书钉).
"Why two bags?" Her father asked. "The other is something else," Molly answered.
"What's in it?" "Just some stuff (东西). Take it with you."
Not wanting to discuss the matter, he put both sacks into his briefcase, kissed Molly and rushed off.
At midday he opened Molly's bag and took out the contents: two hair ribbons, three small stones, a plastic
dinosaur, a tiny sea shell, a small doll, and 13 pennies…The busy father smiled, finished eating, and swept
the desk clean into the wastebasket, Molly's stuff included.
That evening, Molly ran up behind him as he read the paper. "Where's my bag?" "What bag?" "The one I
gave you this morning." "I left it at the office. Why?" "I forgot to put this note in it," she said. "And, besides,
Daddy, the things in the sack are the things I really like. I thought you might like to play with them. You didn't
lose the bag, did you, Daddy?" "Oh, no," he said, lying. "I just forgot to bring it home. I'll bring it tomorrow."
While Molly hugged her father's neck, he unfolded the note that read:"I love you, Daddy." Molly had given him
    her treasures-all that a 7-year-old held dear.
Love in a paper bag, and he missed it-not only missed it, but had thrown it in the wastebasket. So back he
went to the office. Just ahead of the night Janitor (看门人), he picked up the bag from the wastebasket. He
put the treasure inside and carried it home carefully. The bag didn't look so good, but the stuff was all there
    and that's what counted.
After dinner, he asked Molly to tell him about the stuff in the sack. It took a long time to tell. Everything
had a story or a memory.
"Sometimes I think of all the great times in this sweet life," he thought.
We should all remember that it's not the destination that counts in life, but the journey. That journey with
the people we love is all that really matters. It is such a simple truth but it is so easily forgotten.
    1. Why did Molly give her father a second bag?
    [     ]
    A. She didn't want to keep the things in the bag.
    B. She hoped those things would bring happiness to her father.
    C. She wanted to remind her father of the stories behind the things.
    D. She enjoyed playing with her father.
    2. How did Father deal with the bag after he opened it?
    [     ]
    A. He kept it in the drawer.
    B. He took it back home.
    C. He threw it into the wastebasket.
    D. He put it on his table.
    3. After Father heard what his daughter said, he felt _____.
    [     ]
    A. regretful
    B. surprised
    C. sad
    D. satisfied
    4. Which of the following is the most suitable title of the passage?
    [     ]
    A. An Important Journey
    B. Two Bags
    C. Father and Daughter
    D. Love in a Paper Bag

Most American kids love Halloween treats, but a bucket of Halloween candy can be a dentist's nightmare.
Some parents try to get rid of half of the candy after their children go to bed, but dentists say parents also need
to separate the good kinds of treats from the bad.
It is not exactly what a child eats that truly matters, but how much time it stays in his mouth. According to
pediatric dentists Dr Kaneta Lott, the most damaging stuff is something that is sticky or very hard and thus stays
in the mouth for a long time. This is because we all have bacteria in our mouths. When we eat, the bacteria take
our food as their food and produce an acid that destroys the surface of the teeth, causing cavities to form. The
longer the food stays in the mouth, the more likely cavities will develop. Therefore, potato chips are worse than
candy because they get stuck between teeth. For the same reason, raisins and crackers are not the best choice.
Hard candies take a long time to consume and are also a bad choice for Halloween treats.
If children really love candy, dentists recommend that they eat chocolate instead. Unlike hard candies,
chocolate dissolves quickly in the mouth. Besides, chocolate contains tannins, which help to kill some of the
bacteria in the mouth. But no matter what a child eats, brushing after each meal is still the best way to fight
    cavities.
    1. What is the main purpose of this passage?
    [     ]
    A. To discuss how cavities can be treated.
    B. To point out the problems with Halloween celebrations.
    C. To tell parents what sweets are less damaging to their children's teeth.
    D. To teach parents the meaning of Halloween candies for their children.
    2. Why are hard candies especially bad for teeth?
    [     ]
    A. They may break the child's teeth.
    B. They help bacteria to produce tannins.
    C. They contain too much sugar.
    D. They stay in the mouth for a long time.
    3. According to the passage, which of the following is a better choice for Halloween treats?
    [     ]
    A. Chocolate
    B. Crackers
    C. Raisins
    D. Potato chips
    4. According to the passage, which of the following is true of tannins?
    [     ]
    A. They are produced when the bacteria digest the food.
    B. They help to get rid of some bacteria in the mouth.
    C. They help chocolate to dissolve more quickly.
    D. They destroy the surface of the teeth.

                                                              Well-done on an Exam
Do not underestimate the power of revision in the days and hours before an examination. The closer you
are to the exam, the more chance you have of storing and attaining key information. But do not overdo it.
1______ An effective daily routine can help you through an exam period, so in the days leading up to your
first exam, get into the habit of being up and read to work. It can be a shock to the system after months of
working to your own timetable to be mentally alert at that time if you have not prepared for it.
On the day of the exam, have a good breakfast, pack everything you need ( pens, pencils, erasers, etc),
then make your way to the examination hall in good time. 2______
Once in your seat, simply pause for a few seconds and collect your thoughts. Close your eyes and take
in a few slow, deep breaths to help you relax. When you turn over the test paper, spend a short period reading
through all the instructions and questions, paying particular attention to key verbs such as "discuss", "compare"
and "evaluate". 3______ It is always wise to allow 10 minutes at the end of the exam to give yourself time to
go back over your answers. Once you have selected the questions you wish to tackle, begin by attempting the
one you think is your strongest. It will give you more confidence when you see a well-answered question down
on paper. Also remember to write clearly, and do not be afraid to express the unexpected: after all, examiners
can get very bored marking stereotypical (模式化的) answers.
4______ If you need something else to focus on to help you collect your thoughts, choose a fixture in the
room, such as the ceiling or anything else that will not allow you to be distracted.
Finally, once you have finished, never hang around outside afterwards to attend the discussion by other
    students. 5______
    A. Try not to look at those around you, or at the clock.
    B. When you get home, read the examination paper through and look up the other words you didn't understand. C. Sleep, exercise and relaxation are all just as important.
    D. Map out a quick plan of points you wish to make and how much time you should spend on each question.
    E. Go and have a well-earned rest---then prepare the next exam.
    F. Do not arrive too early, though, as other people's anxiety can be contagious (传染性的), and you may suffer
        from undue panic.
    G. If possible, you can arrive early and communicate with those worried students and help them overcome their
        anxiety.
