                                                       What is happiness to you?
Are you happy? Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness today?
Many people have    1    a variety of sources for their happiness. Some have put their heart and effort
into their work. Too many have turned to drugs and alcohol. Untold numbers have turned to expensive cars,
exotic vacations, and other popular "toys". Most of their efforts have one point in    2   : people are looking
    for a    3    of happiness.
Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes many people because they    4    the process and journey
of finding it. I have heard many people say that, "I'll be happy when I get a higher position." Or "I'll be happy
when I lose that    5    20 pounds." The list goes on and on. You probably have a few of your own you
could    6    to it if you wanted.
But this thinking is    7    because it presupposes (预先假定) that happiness is a "response" to having,
being or doing something. In life, we all    8    stimulus (刺激) and response. Stimulus is when a dog barks
at you. Response is when your heart beats faster and you    9    to run. Today, some people think that an
expensive car is a stimulus. Happiness is a response. A great paying job is a stimulus. Happiness is a response.
A loving relationship is a stimulus. Happiness is a response. This belief   10   us thinking and feeling:"I'll be
    happy when…"
It has been my finding that actually the   11   is true. I believe that happiness is a stimulus and response is
what life brings to those   12   are truly happy. When we are happy, we   13   have more success in our work.
When we are happy, people want to be around us and enjoy loving relationships. When we are happy, we more
naturally take better care of our   14   and enjoy good health. Happiness is NOT a response -  15  , it is a
    stimulus.
Happiness is a choice we   16   every day of our lives. For unknown reasons to me, many choose to be
painful, unsuccessful and angry most of the time. Actually, happiness is   17   something that happens to us
after we get something we want-we usually can get things we want   18   we choose to be happy.
I have made only one   19   rule for my own happiness: Every day above ground is a GOOD day.   20  ,
I tend to have a lot of good and happy days continually.

Two truck drivers didn't know each other when they arrived at the scene of a bad traffic accident on
Kentucky's mountain highway last June. Yet they worked together like long-time partners and saved two
drivers from near certain death. For their bravery, Terry and Floyd have been named Goodyear North
America Highway Heroes for 2003. The award was announced on Thursday at the Mid-America Trucking
Show. Terry and Floyd were rewarded $20,000 with a free trip to Nashville.
On June 22, Terry and Floyd, driving trucks separately, came across an accident involving a jeep and a
car on mountain parkway. The quick-thinking men broke the back window of the upside-down jeep, freed
the driver from his seat belt, and dragged him to safety. But the driver of the car was made unable to move
with a lot of weight on him inside the car, and the fire from the jeep was spreading dangerously close.
"The paint was melting (融化) on the car; it was so hot," recalled Floyd.
Terry and Floyd fastened a nylon strap (带子) between Floyd's truck and the car in an effort to pull it
away from the burning jeep. The first two failed. On the third try, the strap held and Floyd pulled the car to
safety. Soon afterward, the fire reached the jeep's gas tank, creating a fireball that took in the area where the

It could not have been easy to see the tiny swimmer, but a group of scientists claimed to have discovered
the world's tiniest fish. The little creature was found recently in an Indonesian swamp (沼泽).
For now, the fish is known as Paedocypris progenetica. It has a transparent, or see-through, body. Its head
doesn't have a skeleton (骨架), leaving its brain vulnerable (脆弱的) to its surroundings. The fish, which is
female (雌性的), can grow to be only 7.9 millimeters or (0.31 inches) long, about the size of a large mosquito
    (蚊子).
Maurice Kottelat, a fish expert from Sweden, led the team of researchers that made the discovery. Kottelat
and his team reported their discovery in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, a British scientific journal.
"You don't wake up in the morning and think today we will find the smallest fish in the world," said Kottelat
in an interview. He and his team were most excited by the possibility of having discovered the world's smallest
vertebrate. "What's important is finding a complete backbone in a body so small," said Kottelat. All fish, reptiles
(爬行动物), birds, and mammals (including humans) are vertebrates.
It wasn't long after Kottelat's announcement that another researcher challenged the claim with a discovery
of his own. Fish expert Ted Pietsch, a researcher at the University of Washington, says that he has discovered
a fish that is smaller than Kottelat's discovery.
According to Pietsch, the male Photocorynus spiniceps is a tiny ocean fish measuring only about a quarter
inch. That would actually make Pietsch's fish the world's smallest vertebrate. Kottelat's would come in at a
close second. When Pietsch got in touch with Kottelat to mention the fish, four of which he keeps in his office-
Kottelat did not argue. He kindly gave the title of "world's smallest vertebrate" over to Pietsch's unique fish.
"So our little fish is only the smallest freshwater vertebrate," Kottelat wrote. "Now I wait until the next
    smallest fish is discovered."
    1. Pietsch's fish is shorter than Kottlelat's by about _____.
    [     ]
    A. 0.01 inches
    B. 0.06 inches
    C. 0.1 inches
    D. 0.31 inches
    2. The underlined word "vertebrate" probably means "_____".
    [     ]
    A. a creature in an ocean
    B. a fish in fresh water
    C. an animal that can swim
    D. an animal with a backbone
    3. Which statement is TRUE according to the text?
    [     ]
    A. Kottlelat's fish still keeps the record of the smallest fresh water vertebrate so far.
    B. Pietsch's record of discovery of the world's smallest fish was soon broken by others.
    C. Kettlelat didn't admit that Pietsch's fish was even smaller than his.
    D. All fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and humans share the same ancestor.
    4. Which question doesn't seem to be answered so far according to the text?
    [     ]
    A. Is fish a vertebrate animal?
    B. What's the world's smallest fish indeed?
    C. What is the smallest freshwater vertebrate?
    D. What size is Pietsch's fish?

Situated in the South West of England, between Exeter and Plymouth, Torquay is one of the most popular
holiday resorts in Britain. It provides sophisticated (精致) entertainment, sports of every kind and cultural
facilities, all set in a position of outstanding natural beauty. Visitors can choose between luxury hotels by the
sea, with private suites (套房), swimming pools, and comfortable but less expensive guest houses. There are
camping sites, too, and hundreds of houses displaying "B & B" signs.
As well as a number of small quiet bays, which are ideal for beach barbecues (野餐) away from the crowds,
Torquay has large sandy beaches where you can buy refreshments (饮料) and hire deck chairs, boats and even
beach houses. There are large areas of grassland overlooking the sea, and miles of winding cliff paths for
walkers who just want to enjoy the scenery and what is often said to be the healthiest air in the country. For the
sportsmen and women there are opportunities not only for golf, tennis, but also for water-skiing, hang-gliding
    (悬挂式滑翔机) and deep-sea fishing.
After a day in the open air, there's lots to do in the evenings, too. There are plenty of discos, the occasional
opera or ballet, and summer variety shows in the seafront theatres. For the children, there is a beautiful model
village with a complicated railway layout which is remarkably realistic-especially when the lights are all on at
    night.
Of course, there's no need to spend your whole holidays in Torquay. Only a short drive away is Dartmoor
National Park, where you can walk for miles through dramatic (戏剧性的), unspoiled (未损坏的) countryside,
or picnic by beautiful rivers and streams. Or, nearer to home, you can sail across Tor Bay to the lovely old
    fishing village of Brixham.
Torquay seems to have something for everyone. But don't take my word for it-come and see for yourself.
    1. Which of the following best explains what "B & B" means on the signs?
    [     ]
    A. Bed and breakfast.
    B. Breakfast and bathroom.
    C. Bathroom and barbecue .

Poll (民意测验)-People unhappy with the rich
There is growing dissatisfaction toward rich people, according to a new online poll.
The poll by the China Youth Daily in co-operation with Sina.com has shown the obvious discontent over
    the country's widening income gap.
Nearly 8,000 people filled in online questionnaires last week, and when asked to use three words to describe
society's rich, the top answers were "extravagant" (奢侈), "greedy" (贪婪) and "corrupt" (堕落).
About 57 percent of those polled said that"extravagant" was the best word to describe the rich, followed
    closely by "greedy".
However, despite their dissatisfaction, 93 percent of those polled wished they could be rich too, and that
richer people should be "socially responsible".
Some 33 percent of the people also praised rich people for being "smart".
