While drunken driving may be on the decline, traffic safety experts remain puzzled over how to deal with
another alcohol related danger: drunken pedestrians (行人).
Pedestrians struck and killed by cars often are extremely drunk. In fact, they are intoxicated more
frequently, and with higher blood alcohol levels, than drunken drivers who are killed in accidents, various
studies have shown. Forty percent of adult pedestrians involved in fatal crashes have a blood alcohol level of
at least 0.10, which by law in many states signifies intoxication (醉酒), compared to only 25 percent of drivers
in deadly accidents, according to recent federal data.
Some types of pedestrian accidents have been declining nationally, especially those involving children, but
the number of adult pedestrians who are drunk when killed in traffic has remained relatively steady at 2,500 a
year. The total number of pedestrians killed annually in U.S. traffic accidents is at least 7,000, or one of every
seven highway accidents resulting in death.
"We're dealing here, we think, with a very severe drinking problem that leads to a severe highway safety
problem," said Richard Bloomberg, president of Dunlap and Associates Inc, in Norwalk, Coon.
Bloomberg, whose consulting company found a very high rate of alcohol involvement in a controlled study
of pedestrian accidents in New Orleans, was among several researchers who spoke on the topic at the annual
meeting of the Research council's Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington in January.
Pedestrian accidents have not received enough attention in the past, according to Kay Culprits, who chairs
the board's committee on pedestrians. Few methods exist to monitor walking habits, she said, and researchers
have been confused about how to prevent disasters.
    1. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
    [     ]
    A. Traffic Safety.
    B. Drunken Drivers.
    C. Drunken Pedestrian Accidents.
    D. A Severe Highway Safety problem.
    2. Among the causes of walkers' accidents, the most serious problem is _____.
    [     ]
    A. long delays in traffic signals that may make people cross streets without paying attention to traffic rules
    B. alcohol
    C. a lack of adult keeping eyes on many children involved in accidents
    D. former drunken drivers whose licenses are not allowed to use for a time
    3. According to recent federal data, drunken drivers with an over 0.10 blood alcohol level in deadly
        accidents _____.
    [     ]
    A. make up one seventh of highway accidents
    B. are 2,500 a year
    C. are at least 7,000 in US traffic accidents
    D. are 15 percent less than drunken adult walkers with the same level
    4. According to the passage, what is Bloomberg?
    [     ]
    A. A researcher.
    B. A specialist in traffic safety.
    C. A clerk of a consulting company.
    D. A government official

The unquestioned role of a student is to learn as much as possible through whatever means it takes to
acquire knowledge. Teachers and professors are human beings and are therefore not perfect. No one knows
the correct answer to every question even when you limit the questions to a certain field of study. Having
certain skepticism (质疑) about what they are being taught can help students to make the teachers even better
    by correcting mistakes and misinformation.
Students certainly have a huge role in their own abilities to learn. Teachers should act more as guides
along the way rather than try to force each student to learn. The best teachers in the world cannot teach an
unmotivated student. If the teacher, for whatever reason, cannot motivate the student, then the student must
somehow find a way to motivate himself or herself.
One method of doing this is by becoming an active rather than a passive student. The more the student
involves himself or herself in the act of studying, the better he or she can learn. One of the best ways to
become more active is simply to ask the teacher or professor questions. Students who passively sit in a
classroom and take everything that the teacher says for granted are not fully using their mental capacities
    to learn.
Better education comes from teachers who are able to get their students to think about a subject rather
than merely absorb a certain amount of information. Having a healthy skepticism can improve a student's
ability to both think and absorb knowledge in a learning situation.
Teachers are human beings and no one is one hundred percent right all of the time, even in a classroom
situation. Perhaps a teacher would simply unconsciously say the wrong word or pass on some misinformation
that the teacher truly believed was correct. A student's question could prevent an entire classroom from
    becoming confused or misinformed.
There is of course a fine balance between a student having a healthy skepticism, and just being a downright
skeptic. But with the proper attitude toward learning and a little skepticism, both the students and teachers
can improve upon the learning process and maximize learning efficiency.
    1. Which of the following is the author's main argument?
    [     ]
    A. Passive learning results from passive teaching in class.
    B. A student's ability plays a huge role in the learning process.
    C. A healthy skepticism fully depends on students' motivation and ability.
    D. A healthy skepticism and proper attitude contribute to effective learning.
    2. Being passive learners, the students _____.
    [     ]
    A. use little of their mental ability while studying
    B. seldom involve themselves completely in learning
    C. can hardly tell the right from the wrong in class
    D. simply ask their teachers questions without thinking
    3. According to the passage, a good teacher should _____.
    [     ]
    A. help the unmotivated students patiently
    B. instruct students in the learning process
    C. make no mistakes in the teaching process
    D. answer all the questions raised by students

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence
and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these
    experiences.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which help people forget bad memories.
The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or
possibly erase the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing
chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far, the research has suggested that only the emotional effects
of meomories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after wars.
They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories. "Some memories can ruin people's
lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually
come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry (精神病学) at Harvard
Medical School. "This could relieve( 减轻) a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories
give us our identity. They also help us avoid the mistakes in the past. "All of us can think of bad events in our
lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I am not sure we'd want to wipe those memories
out." said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.
    1. What's the main idea of this passage?
    [     ]
    A. People often suffer from bad memories.
    B. American researchers are trying to develop a pill.
    C. Forget bad memories, and be happy.
    D. The research has caused a heated argument.
    2. The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refers to "_____".
    [     ]
    A. the new drug
    B. the research into the drug
    C. the bad memory
    D. the chemical in the drug
    3. Which of the following is NOT the opinion of the opponents (反对者)?
    [     ]
    A. Our memories give us our identity.
    B. The memories help human avoid mistakes of the past.
    C. The drug should be used in only very serious cases.
    D. People may not be sure whether they want to wipe the memories out.

We all look forward to vacations. They can give our daily life colorful meaning. Moreover, in the busy
world we live in, we all need a vacation to get the rest and relaxation our bodies desire. The most important
thing in planning a vacation is where you will spend your vacation. If you want to make sure you can visit
the best vacation spot (地点), there are many factors (因素) that will influence where the best vacation spot
    is for you.
The first thing to consider when choosing the best vacation spot is what you would like to do. Do you
want to ski? Do you want to surf? Are you looking for a spot that has great shopping and a beach as well?
Are you looking for something that is a little more historic or that has religious meaning to you? These are
    great questions to ask.
And once you have decided on this, you may want to decide what time you are taking your vacation. It
would be difficult to have a ski trip in Colorado in the middle of July. You would want to visit in the winter.
Or if you have your heart set on skiing in July, you would need to go to South America, such as Chile, to do
your skiing at this time of year.
The next thing to consider when finding the best vacation spot for your trip is your budget (预算). You
may want to go to Italy to see the old historic buildings, such as the Sistine Chapel. But the fact is that if you
don't have the money to back it up, you won't be able to do this. You may find the best thing for you is to
visit some old castles in America. You can find these throughout the eastern United States, such as North
Carolina. And you will also find great shopping and many other attractions for your vacation. Perhaps you
are someone who has always wanted to go to Cancun for spring break. If you do not have the budget for
this, Miami is also a great place. There are plenty of bars there. It has plenty of attractions and even some
of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It also has South Beach, which is actually a fantastic beach.
There are amazing vacation destinations all over the world. The choice is really up to you. It truly depends
on your taste, budget and what you want to do on your vacation. There are many websites to help you find
the best price no matter what your budget is. Keep the advice in mind and you will be on your way to having
a wonderful vacation that you will be talking about for the rest of your life.
