From the beginning of human history, wild animals provided food, clothing and sometimes medicine.
We may not depend as much on wild animals now. But we hear about them every day. Americans use the
names of animals in many ways. Automobile manufacturers and gasoline companies especially like to use
big cats to sell their products. They like lions, tigers and wildcats. When Americans say wildcat, they usually
mean a lynx, an ocelot or a bobcat. All these cats attack quickly and fiercely. So wildcats represent something
    fast and fierce.
An early American use of the word wildcat was quite different. It was used to describe members of
Congress who declared war on Britain in 1812. A magazine of that year said the wildcat congressmen went
home. It said they were unable to face the responsibility of having involved their country in an unnecessary
    war.
Wildcat also has been used as a name for money in the 1800s. At that time, some states permitted banks
to make their own money. One bank in the state of Michigan offered paper money with a picture of a wildeat
on it. Some banks, however, did not have enough gold to support all the paper money they offered. So the
money had little or no value. It was called a wildcat bill or a wildcat bank note. The banks who offered this
money were called wildcat banks. A newspaper of the time said those were the days of wildcat money. It
said a man might be rich in the morning and poor by night.
Wildcat then was also used for an oil well or gold mine that had almost no oil or gold in it. Dishonest
developers would buy such property. Then they would sell it and leave town with the money. The buyers
were left with worthless holes in the ground. Today, wildcat oil wells are in areas that are not known to have
    oil.
    1. What is the main idea of the passage?
    [     ]
    A. Wildcats and their stories.
    B. Wildcats and their characters.

The writings of Shakespeare are today little read by young people in Britain. His young readership is limited
to those who choose to study literature at university.
Shakespeare's work, together with most other classics, is seen as remote, and written in a 400-year-old
version of English that is about as inviting as toothache.
Still, in British schools, it is compulsory to study the bard (诗人), and when something is made compulsory,
usually the result is boredom, resentment (憎恨) or both.
This was my experience of the classics at school. But when I reached my late teenage years, I had a change
of heart. Like every other young person since the dawn of time, the world confused me. I wanted answers, so
I turned to books to find them.
I went on to take a PhD in literature and have taught it in Britain and China. I have never regretted it. There
is something in literature that people want, even if they don't read books. You see this in the popularity of TV
and movie adaptations of great works, the recent film version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice being a case
    in point
. These popular adaptations may help increase people's interest in the classics.
Reading a simplified Romeo and Juliet may perhaps lead to a reading of Shakespeare play. If that is the case,
then I welcome the trend. But do not make the mistake of thinking that it is the same thing. Shakespeare is a
poet. His greatness is in his language. Reading someone else's rewriting of his work is like peeling a banana,
throwing away the fruit, and eating the skin. Take on the original. It really is worth the effort.
    1. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
    [     ]
    A. The language used in classics is no longer in use today.
    B. British students usually find compulsory reading dull.
    C. Only those studying literature read Shakespeare's works.
    D. For British people, Shakespeare's works are no longer classics.
    2. According to the passage, the writer _____.
    A. has liked literary classics since an early age
    B. was forced to read the classics for a PhD
    C. turned to literature to seek answers in his teens
    D. thinks only people who read books like literature
    3. The popularity of TV and movie adaptations of great works may help people _____.
    [     ]
    A. learn more about tradition
    B. get a PhD in literature
    C. seek their answers about the world
    D. become more interested in the classics
    4. The underlined phrase "a case in point" in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to "_____".
    [     ]
    A. a great hit
    B. a good example
    C. a movie adaptation
    D. a popular phenomenon
    5. What does the writer intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
    [     ]
    A. The fruit of a banana is more useful than its skin.
    B. The rewriting trend does more harm than good.
    C. Readers should try to read the original versions.
    D. Readers need to learn the language in the classics.

Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are a major cause of climate change, and now a new
study has confirmed that atmospheric CO2 is also affecting the ocean chemistry and potentially harming
    sea life.
Montana State University scientist Robert Dore has been researching the water in the Pacific Ocean for
    almost two decades.
"We've been going to the same spot in the Pacific Ocean, and we try and characterize long-term change
in the open ocean environment. And one of the key things that we measure is CO2 levels. And we've been
able to record this increasing quantity of atmospheric CO2 into the ocean."
Scientists expected that as atmospheric CO2 increased, more and more of the carbon dioxide would be
absorbed into the ocean, affecting the chemical balance of the sea water, with a potentially harmful impact
on shellfish and coral in particular.
"As carbon dioxide dissolves (溶解) in the water or seawater in this case, it forms a weak acid, carbonic
acid," Dore explains. "And therefore, as the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere goes up and that
exchanges with the surface seawater, it drives the pH down, and makes it more acidic."
The seawater Dore and his colleagues have analyzed confirms what the theory predicts.
The effect was particularly striking at about 250 meters down, and again at 500 meters. Dore and his
colleagues came up with two possible explanations. It could be that surface water picked up CO2 and then
moved to those depths. Or there could be a biological explanation.
"It's important to realize that the oceans are really becoming acidic. And it could have negative impacts
on a whole variety of sea life from fish to coral. It's potentially catastrophic."
    1. What can be the best title of the passage?
    [     ]
    A. Sea Life Facing Danger
    B. Scientist Researching Seawater
    C. Oceans Becoming More Acidic
    D. Climate Change Affecting Seawater
    2. With the increase of atmospheric CO2, _____.

    C. the chemical balance of the seawater is affected
    D. the pH of the ocean out here has been increasing
    3. Which of the following shows the process of the impact of atmospheric CO2 on sea life?
        a. Sea life is endangered.
        b. CO2 goes into the surface water.
        c. The ocean chemistry is affected.
        d. CO2 decreases the pH and makes the seawater more acidic.

As more Americans go to mainland China to take jobs, more Chinese and Americans are working side
by side. These cross-cultural partnerships, while beneficial in many ways, are also highlighting tensions
that expose differences in work experience, pay levels and communication.
In the last few years, a growing number of Americans in their 20s and 30s have been heading to China
for employment, attracted by its faster-growing economy and lower jobless rate. Their Chinese co-workers
are often around the same age. But the two groups were raised differently. The Americans have had more
exposure to free-market principles. "Young Americans were brought up in a commercial environment," said
Neng Zhao, 28, a semor associate at Blue Oak Capital, a private firm based in Beijing. "We weren't. So the
workplace is a unique learning process for my generation."
Managers hiring workers in China appear to be paying for Western experience. Foreigners tend to earn
10 to 15 percent more than their Chinese counterparts (persons working in similar positions), said Michael
Norman, senior vice president at Sibson Consulting, an American firm. That imbalance does not go unnoticed
by Chinese workers. "There is definitely the belief that Americans get paid more for the same work," said
Ting Wang, 25, an associate at WildChina, a travel company based in Beijing. On the other hand, Chinese
workers have a deeper understanding of the influences, like Confucianism'and Communism, which play a
part in their country's culture and economy.
It is important and necessary for Americans working in China to adjust, said Mr. Norman, who works
on management and work force issues for multinational companies operating in Asia.
"In the West, there is such a bonus on getting things done quickly, but when you come to work in China,
you need to work on listening and being more patient and understanding of local ways of doing business,"
    he said.
    1. More Americans go to China to take jobs because _____.
    [     ]
    A. they want to experience different cultures
    B. Chinese workers are easier to cooperate
    C. they can't find proper jobs in America
    D. the economy of China is developing rapidly
    2. What is mainly talked about in the passage?
    [     ]
    A. Cross-cultural conflicts.
    B. Cross-cultural partnerships.
    C. Multi-national companies in China.
    D. Different pays for the same work.
    3. What can we learn from the passage?
    [     ]
    A. Americans benefit more from working in China.
    B. Chinese and American employees have the same experience.
    C. Young Chinese can benefit from cross-cultural partnerships.
    D. More Americans working in China cause higher jobless rate.
    4. What does the underlined word "imbalance" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
    [     ]
    A. Unfair pay levels.
    B. Different working experience.
    C. Unequal opportunities.
    D. Different upbringing environment.
    5. We can infer from the last paragraph that _____.
    [     ]
    A. Americans working in China adjust very well
    B. ways of doing business in different countries differ
    C. doing business in China takes money and patience
    D. international companies need to understand each other

[l]Compared to people with bad attitudes, people _____ are less likely to suffer from colds. It's possible
that being positive helps the body fight illnesses.
[2]In a previous study, people who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop coughs
and other cold symptoms. People who showed positive feelings were also less likely to mention symptoms
to their doctors, even when medical tests detected those symptoms.
[3]Those findings were interesting, but they didn't prove that a person's attitude affects whether he or
    she gets sick.
Instead, it was still possible that a person's underlying personality is what matters.
[4]Evidence suggests, for instance, that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and
optimistic, with high self-esteem and a sense of control over life. This would mean that who we are, not
how we feel, ultimately decides our chances of catching colds.
[5]To figure out which mattered more, personality or emotions, the researchers interviewed 193 healthy
adults. The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get infected. Their symptoms,
however, differed depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the previous fortnight.
[6]Among those who reported good moods and had been infected with the flu virus, for example, 28
percent developed coughs and stuffy noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 41 percent of people
    who had been less positive.
[7]Scientists argue about whether negative emotions or positive emotions have a stronger effect on how
healthy we are. For now, it can't hurt to look on the bright side more often than not!
