"Son!" Tim's father shouted, "Is it possible for you to turn that noise down!?"
"Sorry dad, but I love to play it loud because it makes me happy!" Tim replied while driving. He had
bought the car a week before he got his driver's license. The old car was all he could afford with the money
he'd earned since he was 14 mowing lawns (修草坪) in his neighborhood.
"Tim", his father asked again with that same worried look Tim was used to seeing, "What makes you
happy by listening to that screaming (尖声的) guitar and what's the name of that trash?"
         "The song is called 'Happy'."
"All I hear is that noisy guitar."
"You never listen long enough to hear the words!"
         They continued arguing.
As Tim neared the bend in the narrow road leading to their home, a new red sports car was out of control.
Tim madly tried to turn to the right but the red car hit the driver's side of Tim's car very quickly.
Tim's father saw Tim's face was covered in blood. The driver of the red sports car ran near."Sir, I'm sorry!
Here's my phone!" the young man shouted with a strong smell of beer on his breath.
Tim was taken to the hospital. As Tim's mother arrived, she and her husband cried with fear uncontrollably.
Then the doctor asked them to come to a private room. "Your son asked that if he died, I'd promise to tell his
dad something. Sir, he asked me to tell you to please listen long enough to hear the words."
Two weeks after Tim's burial (葬礼), his father opened the door of the car that he simply could not bear
to sell. He turned Tim's favorite song up loudly and listened until he heard the words. "I'm so happy; I'm so
    grateful."
He knew what Tim had been trying to tell him for so many years. Tearfully he read the words:"A happy
heart makes the face cheerful, but sadness destroys the spirit."
    1. How did Tim's father think of Tim's favorite music before the accident?

    [     ]

    A. It was exciting.
    B. It was just like rubbish.
    C. It was a kind of soft music.
    D. It was popular with the young.

    [     ]

    A. Tim's father didn't pay attention while listening to music.
    B. Tim had just learned driving one week before.
    C. The road was too narrow for the two cars.
    D. The driver of the red sports car drank too much beer.
    3. What did Tim expect his father to do before he died?

You hear a rumor (谣言) from a friend, who heard it from another friend, who read it on a note passed
in math class, which was written by somebody who probably just made it up. Chances are, rumors are always
spreading around your school. Sometimes it can be very hurtful. But why do people still do so?
When people are feeling bad about themselves, they sometimes think they'll feel better if there were someone
worse off than they are. It's okay being near the bottom, as long as they're not actually on the bottom. The
easiest way for them to make sure someone else is on the bottom is to make up a rumor that puts him or her
    there.
If everybody else is spreading rumors, you might feel you have to do the same thing in order to fit in.
Unfortunately, the person who the gossip or rumor is about is usually left out of the group for the same reason
    that you're let into it.
When you know a secret that nobody knows, or are the first person in your group to hear a rumor, it can
make you the center of attention. A rumor or piece of gossip is sometimes like money; telling it to people is like
    buying their attention.
Certain people always want to be at the top of the ladder (梯子). You probably know at least one person
who wishes to be the leader, say what goes, and make all the decisions. One way they do this is by reducing
(降低) the status (地位) of another person. Spreading rumors and gossip is one way people reduce another
    person's status.
Sometimes, a period when everyone is happy and getting along just seems kind of dull. Spreading rumors
might get two people to start a fight, and that would make life a little more exciting. All those newspapers and
TV shows full of gossip about famous people are proving that rumors are a popular form of entertainment.
    1. We know from Paragraph 2 that some people spread rumors to _____.

    [     ]

    A. be more confident
    B. feel like part of a group
    C. attract attention
    D. be more powerful
    2. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 may mean some people _____.

    [     ]

    A. love looking down from a high position
    B. hope to become leaders
    C. are not afraid of falling down
    D. are fond of spreading rumors
    3. What do we know from the last paragraph?

    [     ]

    A. Famous people like spreading rumors.
    B. Rumors can make people feel bored.
    C. Some people seek excitement from rumors.
    D. There are many rumors in newspapers.

It was Mother's Day. John was so busy with his work that he couldn't go back home. When he passed
by a flower shop in the evening, an idea came to his mind, "I'll send Mum some roses." While John was
picking his flowers, a young man went inside. "How many roses can I get for only five dollars, madam?" he
asked. The assistant was trying to tell him roses were as expensive as forty dollars a dozen (一打). Maybe
he would be happy with carnations (康乃馨).
"No, I have to have red roses," he said. "My mum was badly ill last year and I didn't get to spend much
time with her. Now I want to get something special, it has to be roses as rose is her favourite."
After hearing it, John said he would pay the rest of the money for the young man. Moved by both of
them, the assistant said, "Well, lovely young men, thirty dollars a dozen, only for you." Taking the roses, the
young man almost jumped into the air and ran out of the shop. It was well worth twenty-five dollars that
John paid to see the exciting moment. Then John paid for his dozen of roses and told the assistant to send
    them to his mother.
As he walked out, he felt nice. Suddenly he saw the young man crossing the street and going into a park.
But soon John realized it was not a park but a cemetery (墓地). Crying, the young man carefully put down
the roses, "Mum, oh, Mum, why didn't I tell you how much I loved you? God, please help me find my mum
and tell her I love her."
Seeing this, John turned and quickly walked to the shop. He would take the flowers home himself.
    1. John spent _____ altogether (总共) in the flower shop that day.
    [     ]
    A. $5
    B. $25
    C. $30
    D. $55
    2. The young man cried at the cemetery because he _____.
    [     ]
    A. had spent all his money on the roses
    B. wasn't able to tell his mother he loved her himself
    C. felt sorry to ask John to pay for his flowers
    D. hadn't got enough money for his sick mother
    3. At last John changed his mind and went home because he wanted to _____.
    [     ]
    A. tell his mother he loved her himself
    B. ask his mother for more money
    C. tell his mother the young man's story
    D. ask his mother if she liked roses

    A. Buy roses for your mother when she is ill
    B. Let your mother know how much you love her
    C. Work hard to get more money for your mother

  • 任务型阅读。认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
    注意:每个空格只填1个单词。
Next to e-mail, the most popular activity on the Internet is chatting, which is a kind of social interaction
(社会交互作用). If you ask someone what kind of things they do most on the Internet, they will answer
that they like to chat. This seems especially true of the younger generation. Below are some tips that will
make your chat experience friendly and fun.
Walking into a room and demanding age and sex (性别) is the most common mistake a new chatter makes.
Most regular chatters will ignore (不理会) the question and you. Don't limit yourself. Talk to everyone in
the room equally. You will soon know who shares your interests and who doesn't. If you prefer a one-on-one
type of online friendship, then maybe you'd better look for pal (好友).
Shy? Many people feel shy when they enter a chat room where everyone seems to know everyone else
except him. It's really easy to feel left out. The best way to lose that feeling is to make yourself feel that you
are not a stranger. If you enter a room and say "Hello, everyone! My name (nickname here) and I'm new."
You will find that there are a couple of friendly people that will be happy to help you become part of them.
Basically the best way to have a good chat experience is to be yourself and friendly. Try to join in the
conversations going on and don't be afraid to ask for help. Do remember, however, not everyone is nice and
friendly. There are also going to be a few people that are rude and just make you feel rotten. The best thing
to do is just ignore them. Arguing with them will just make it worse. Show that you are better than they are
by just refusing to let them get to you.
