     A little boy invited his mother to attend his school's first teacher-parent meeting. To the little boy's
surprise, she said she would go. This would be the first time that his classmates and teacher    1    his
mother and he felt ashamed (羞愧) of her    2   . Although she was a beautiful woman, there was a scar
(疤痕) that covered nearly the right side of her face. The boy never wanted to know about why or how
she got the scar.
     At the meeting, the people were     3    by the kindness and natural beauty of his mother though she
had the scar, but the little boy was still    4    and hid himself from everyone,    5    a conversation
between his mother and the teacher.
    The teacher asked carefully, "How did you get the scar on your face?"
    The mother answered, "When my son was a baby, he was in a room that caught fire. Everyone was
too afraid to go in because the fire was so big, so I went in. As I was running to his bed. I saw a piece
of wood    6    down and I placed myself over him trying to protect him. I was knocked down but    7   ,
a fireman came in and saved both of us." She touched the    8    side of her face. "This scar will be
lasting (持久的), but to this day, I have never regretted (后悔) what I did."
    At this point, the little boy came out    9    to his mother with tears in his eyes. He held her mother in
his arms and realized a great sense of the sacrifice (牺牲) that his mother had made for him. He held her
hand tightly for the   10   of the day.

     Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was
to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her father died
and she was never able to volunteer with him. Renee's story doesn't end there, however, which is why I
think of her as a true hero. She was strong-minded and never gave up, which makes her a good firefighter.
     Some days she must be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car
accident or helping someone who's sick. Other days she is in the driver's seat. Sometimes Renee works
nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to take care of. Her husband is a
firefighter, too.
     Renee remembers the first time she fought a fire. She was woken up early in the morning by the alarm
(警报). She said she was very nervous but did what she had to do.
     When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, "Helping people and saving their lives."
I think that shows she is a true hero. She's always glad to do anything for anyone in need. With 140 people
in her station, Renee is one of the only three women. 
     I think she's great. We could never live without people like her who is glad to help others. Renee's deed
helps me believe that I can do anything. I hope someday to be just like her, to wake up and help people
every day.

     We know watching TV is one of activities of the day and night. TV    1    the outside world closer to
people's home. Some of the people think the world is becoming    2    than before because of TV.
     But what's going on in the other countries? How do the people live in the places    3    are far away?
Is there a good sports game somewhere? And what's the life in the deepest part of the sea?
     If you want to know the    4    to these and other kinds of questions, just turn to the TV. Turn it    5    
and watch, you can see a lot and    6    much more about the whole world. Of course, people can also learn
by reading or    7    to the radio. But with the help of TV, they can learn better and    8    easily. Do you
know why? It's just     9   they can not only hear, but also watch. 
     TV helps to open our eyes, TV also helps to open our minds. TV often gives   10   new ideas. We can
learn newer and better ways of doing something.
