I know what you're thinking: Pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night's leftovers
in the a.m. if you want to.
I know lots of women who skip breakfast, and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say
they don't have time, others think they're "saving" calories, still others just don't like breakfast food.
But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you're trying to lose weight. "Eating
just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all," says Katherine Brooking, R.D.,
who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year's "SELF CHALLENGE". And even pizza can be healthy
if it's loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.
Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows
that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern
California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have
    a morning meal.
So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast
altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night's leftovers-it may sound crazy,
but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, "You can always eat it tomorrow," I put away the leftovers
instead of eating more that night. Try it... you may save yourself some pre- bedtime calories. And watch your
    body gain the fat-burning effects.
    1. The word "leftovers" in Paragraph l probably means ____.
    A. food remaining after a meal
    B. things left undone
    C. meals made of vegetables
    D. pizza topped with fruit
    2. What can we infer from the text?
    A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.
    B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.
    C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.
    D. Eating vegetables helps save energy.
    3. According to the last paragraph, it is important to ____.
    A. eat something for breakfast
    B. be careful about what you eat
    C. heat up food before eating it
    D. eat calorie-controlled food
    4. The text is written mainly for those ____.
    A. who go to work early
    B. who want to lose weight
    C. who stay up late
    D. who eat before sleep

America is a country on the move. In unheard-of numbers, people of all ages are exercising their way to
better health. According to the latest figures, 59 percent of American adults exercise regularly-up 12 percent
from just two years ago and more than double the figure of 25 years ago. Even non-exercisers believe they
would be more attractive and confident if they were more active.
It is hard not to get the message. The virtues of physical fitness are shown on magazine covers, postage
stamps, and television ads of everything from beauty soaps to travel books. Exercise as a part of daily life did
not catch on until the late 1960s when research by military doctors began to show the health benefits of' doing
regular physical exercises. Growing publicity (宣传) for races held in American cities helped fuel a strong
interest in the ancient sport of running. Although running has leveled off in recent years as Americans have
discovered equally rewarding-and sometimes safer- forms of exercise, such as walking and swimming, running
remains the most popular form of exercise.
As the popularity of exercise continues to mount, so does scientific evidence of its health benefits. The key
to fitness is exercising the major muscle groups vigorously (强有力地) enough to approximately double the
heart rate and keep it doubled for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Doing such physical exercises three times or more
a week will produce considerable improvements in physical health in about three months.
    1. It can be learnt from the passage that the health benefits of exercise ____.
    A. are to be further studied
    B. are self-evident
    C. are yet to be proved
    D. are supported by scientific evidence
    2. A growing interest in sports developed after ____.
    A. an increasing number of races were held in American cities
    B. research showed their health benefits
    C. scientific evidence of health benefits was shown on TV ads
    D. people got the message from magazine covers and postage stamps
    3. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
    A. Exercise-The Road to Health
    B. Scientific Evidence of Health Benefits
    C. Different Forms of Exercise
    D. Running-A Popular Form of Sport
    4. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the phrase "leveled off" in the paragraph 2?
    A. Reached its lowest level in popularity.
    B. Stopped being popular.
    C. Stopped increasing in popularity.
    D. Become very popular.

No one knows yet the accurate number of lives which have been lost in this terrible fire. But reports
suggest that it is more than one hundred.
A wall of flames fifty feet high and at least one hundred and fifty miles wide is now racing towards
the forests and rich farmlands of southern Victoria. Towns less than one hundred miles from Melbourne
will be in danger unless the wind changes. People are rushing excitedly into the streets. The police have
warned them not to see the fire but many people are doing so.
The cause of the fire is unknown. No rain has fallen in this part of Australia for three months, and the
hot, north-west wind from the great central desert is blowing at more than thirty miles an hour.
The firefighters are travelling to the fire by road, rail and air. But it is not easy to get there. Flames and
fallen trees have cut off or blocked roads and railway lines. The thick smoke often prevents them from
    finding the air strips (飞机跑道).

This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers (young people aged from 13-19) from all over the world
will spend about ten months in U.S. homes. They will attend U.S. schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form
impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other
countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George's
family. In turn, George's son Mike spent a year in Fred's home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months' study, the language
began to come to him. The school was completely different from what he had expected-much harder.
Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six
that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father's word was law, and all activities were around the family rather
than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
"Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk,
but you soon learn to like it."
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. "I suppose I should
criticize American schools," he says. "It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much.
In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your
schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two."
    1. The whole exchange programme is mainly to ____.

    B. send students in America to travel in Germany

    A. there is some middle ground between the two teaching buildings
    B. there are a lot of outside activities
    C. students usually take fourteen subjects in all
    D. students go outside to enjoy themselves in a car
    4. After experiencing the American school life, Mike thought ____.

    B. German schools trained students to be better citizens
    C. American schools were not as good as German schools

Prince Charles yesterday promised to reduce the royal impact on the environment through sweeping
changes to his personal lifestyle and official schedule. The prince will replace carbon-heavy private jets
and helicopters with scheduled flights and train services.
The move came as Prince Charles urged business leaders to publish the environmental pact of their
    activities.
He said, "Few accountants and business decision-makers ask, 'How much of our critical natural resource
is left? How many miles of polar ice cap has our business helped melt this year? By how many inches
have we raised sea levels? How many species have we put at risk? How many homes will be flooded, how
many people will die of thirst or starvation because of our activities?' These are not comfortable questions,
but, by Cod, they need to be asked."
He added, "At the moment these costs do not appear in anyone's books... Yet they are real, they are
incurred now and in a relatively short time, the damage being caused may be beyond remedy (补救)." He
said the world was "running up the biggest global credit card debt in history, but with little or no thought
for how the bill will ever be paid".
Flanked by the prime minister and business and community leaders at St James' Palace, the prince said
his new "accounting for sustainability" project would give consumers the power to choose products that
caused less damage to the planet.
Duchy Originals, the prince's food company, is taking steps to work out how much carbon dioxide and
other green-house gas are emitted in growing, processing and distributing its products. The changes to the
prince's travel arrangements announced yesterday are part of a wider review of the carbon footprint
associated with activities at all three of his residences. Clarence House in London, Highgrove and Birkhall
on the Balmorals estate (庄园 ), as well as the activities of his 21 personal and 105 full-time staff. Measures
include a review of electricity use, commuter and other staff travel and are intended to identify further
reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. The review will report in June, when Clarence House will announce
annual targets to reduce carbon emission.
    1. How does Prince Charles feel about business leaders in terms of environmental protection?
