When I entered Berkeley, I hoped to earn scholarship. Having been a Straight-A student, I believed I could 1 tough subjects and really learn something. One such course was World Literature given by Professor Jayne. I was extremely interested in the ideas he 2 in class. When I took the first exam, I was 3 to find a 77, C-plus, on my test paper, 4 English was my best subject. I went to Professor Jayne, who listened to my arguments but remained 5 . I decided to try harder, although I didn't know what that 6 because school had always been easy for me. I read the books more carefully, but got another 77. Again, I 7 with Professor Jayne. Again, he listened patiently but wouldn't change his 8 . One more test before the final exam. One more 9 to improve my grade. So I redoubled my efforts and, for the first time 10 the meaning of the word "thorough". But my 11 did no good and everything 12 as before. The last hurdle (障碍) was the final. No matter what 13 I got, it wouldn't cancel three C-pluses. I might as well kiss the 14 goodbye. I stopped working hard. I felt I knew the course material as well as I ever would. The night before the final, I even 15 myself to a movie. The next day I decided for once I'd have 16 with a test. A week later, I was surprised to find I got an A. I hurried into Professor Jayne's office. He 17 to be expecting me. "If I gave you the A's you 18 , you wouldn't continue to work as hard." I stared at him, 19 that his analysis and strategy (策略) were correct. I had worked my head 20 , as I had never done before. I was speechless when my course grade arrived: A-plus. It was the only A-plus given. The next year I received my scholarship. I've always remembered Professor Jayne's lesson: you alone must set your own standard of excellence.

John Blanchard was studying the crowd making their way through the station. He was looking for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't, the girl with the rose. When reading a book in a Florida library a year before, John became interested not in the contents of the book, but in the notes penciled in the margin (空白处). The handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and beautiful mind. He discovered the former owner's name in the front of the book: Miss Hollis Maynell. He located her address and wrote a letter introducing himself. The next day he was shipped overseas to serve in the army. During the next year, they grew to know each other through the mail and their friendship developed. John requested a photograph, but she refused, saying if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return home, their first meeting was suggested-7:00 pm at the Grand Central Station in New York. She wrote, "You'll recognize me by the red rose I wear on my coat." So now John was in the station to meet the girl with a rose. As a pretty and slim girl in green came over, John noticed her blue eyes like flowers in spring. He walked directly towards her, entirely forgetting she was not wearing a rose. As John came closer to her, he saw another woman with a red rose stood nearby. Well past 40, this woman had graying hair done under a worn hat. Seeing the girl in green walk quickly away, John felt as if he were split (劈开) in two. He desired to follow that girl, but longed for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned and supported him. The woman looked gentle and sensible. John went to her, saying, "I'm Captain John Blanchard. You must be Miss Maynell. I am glad to meet you here. May I take you to dinner?" She replied with a smile, "I don't know what this is about. But the lady in green who just went by, begged me to wear this rose on my coat. She said if you asked me out to dinner, I'd tell you she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!" |

The Friday after the American holiday of Thanksgiving is called Black Friday. It's said that it's the day that store ledgers (分类账) move into the black and companies become profitable. On that day, retailers slash prices to get consumers to buy. It is also a time when many Americans start their Christmas shopping. VOA's Elizabeth Lee tells us how the economy may affect consumers on that bargain day. "It's just the deals, the sales and everything you can get for a lesser price," said Sandy Thomas, a shopper. But it's a nightmare for others. "I think it's crazy. I've done all of my shopping throughout the week so I don't have to go out on Friday," she said. It's called Black Friday, the start of the traditional Christmas shopping season in the United States. Every year it's the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. Stores open before sunrise and there are deep discounts everywhere you look. While the lead up to Christmas is known as the season of giving, Black Friday can get ugly. Last year a crowd of bargain-hunters killed a Wall-mart worker in a New York suburb. This year, many stores are increasing security while they slash prices. "This is a huge time for the retail stores," said Fred Joutz from George Washington University. "This is when they begin making their profits for the year." Economics professor Fred Joutz says how Americans spend the weekend after Thanksgiving is a good indication of how consumers feel about the future. With the unemployment rate above 10 percent, Joutz says Americans are saving more and spending less. "Credit is still strictly controlled whether through credit cards or through borrowing from banks," he said. Some retailers are attracting consumers by opening on Thanksgiving Day, when shops are traditionally closed. Other stores open their doors anywhere from midnight to four in the morning. And shoppers will be lining up in front of the doors in order to be one of the first ones to walk through and get a big discount. Electronics like flat screen TVs are usually the first items to go. Sandy Thomas says it's an annual family tradition and well worth it. "I just save maybe half of what I would have spent on a regular, you know, shopping trip," she said. Economists say U.S. consumers will spend money this Black Friday, but they will spend it more carefully. |
1. The underlined word "slash" in the first paragraph probably means ____. |
A. reduce B. raise C. increase D. change |
2. The sentence "This day should be a shopper's dream." should be placed between ____. |
A. paragraph two and paragraph three B. paragraph one and paragraph two C. paragraph three and paragraph four D. paragraph five and paragraph six |
3. Why are many stores increasing security according to the passage? |
A. Because there are too many people saving more and spending less. B. Because it's a time when they begin making their profits for the year. C. Because last year a crowd of bargain-hunters caused an accident. D. Because many stores open their doors from midnight to four a.m. |
4. What can we learn from the passage? |
A. Christmas shopping is traditional time and this year it is no exception. B. Electronics like flat screen TVs are usually least discounted. C. The economy only affects consumers on that bargain day. D. Thanksgiving is a good indication of how consumers feel about the future. |

We redheads are well known for our bad tempers. Now it seems there is scientific backing for our particular complaining as well. Scientists in the United States studied a group of 144 dental patients almost half of whom had red hair. They found that the red-haired group were more sensitive to pain and as a result were twice as likely to avoid visiting the dentist. Previous research had shown that redheads were more resistant to the effects of local anaesthesia (局部麻 醉) than people with other hair colours. The scientists say that this red-haired sensitivity to pain stems from the actions of a gene called MCIR. This is responsible for the production of melanin which gives skin and hair its colour. In about five percent of white people the gene is mutated (突变) leading to fair skin and red hair. Researchers say there are some people with the gene in the brain and that this could affect pain sensitivity. Professor Daniel Sessler from the Cleveland Clinic in the United States is one of the authors of the study. He says the research is a considerable scientific breakthrough. "Red hair is the first phenotype (表现某显性特征的生物个体或群体) of anaesthetic requirement in humans. And what I mean by phenotype is an external (外部的) characteristic." "So suppose you are walking down the street and you see someone who's a little older and a little younger- that tells you nothing about their anaesthetic requirement. You see a man and a woman-that tells you nothing about their anaesthetic requirement. But you see a redhead-aha! You know that person is going to require 20 percent more general anaesthesia." From my own personal experience I would say that there is some merit to this idea. I have found that I have had to ask dentists for extra anaesthetic in the middle of procedures. Some dentists argue that a greater sensitivity to pain might actually benefit redheads and drive them to see the dentist more quickly. In my own case I can prove that is definitely not true. |
1. We learn from the text that red-haired group are ____. |
A. easily influenced by the sense of pain and need more anaesthetic requirement B. usually more sensitive to some painful things C. just well-known for their good temper and strong pain sensitivity D. good-looking with fair skin and red hair |
2. What do the scientists think this red-haired sensitivity to pain results from? |
A. Melanin which is responsible for the production which gives skin and hair its colour. B. The mutated gene leading to fair skin and red hair. C. Some persons with this gene in the brain. D. An external characteristic of a person. |
3. According to Professor Daniel Sessler, the most amazing thing about the anaesthetic requirement in humans which can be judged by ____. |
A. someone's age and hair B. someone's gender and figure C. someone's teeth and the skills of the dentist D. someone's external characteristic |
4. We can infer from the last two paragraphs that ____. |
A. redheads need less anaesthetic in the operation B. the results of this red-haired sensitivity to pain will be the same C. the writer is a red-haired person D. redheads have many benefits of being red-haired |

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn't help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, " So, how have you been?" And the boy, who could not have been more than seven or eight years old, replied, "Frankly, I've been a little depressed lately." This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn't find out we were "depressed" until we were in high school. The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don't seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists, why? Human development is based not only on innate (天生的) biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social role (作用) to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders. In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation (揭示) machine has been brought in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information to all viewers alike, indiscriminately (不 加区分地). Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures. Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbol that must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials. |
1. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world ____. |
A. through contact with society B. naturally and by biological instinct (本能) C. gradually and under guidance D. through exposure to social information |
2. The phenomenon that today's children seem adult like is due to ____. |
A. the widespread influence of television B. the poor arrangement of teaching content C. the fast pace of human intellectual development D. the constantly rising standard of living |
3. Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children? |
A. It enables children to gain more social information. B. It develops children's interest in reading and writing. C. It helps children to memorize and practice more. D. It can control what children are to learn. |
4. What does the author think of the change in today's children? |
A. He feels amused by their premature (早熟) behavior. B. He thinks it is a phenomenon worthy of note. C. He considers it a positive development. D. He seems to be upset about it. |

Tips for a Green Vacation Ah, summer is almost upon us, and that means most American families are longing madly to get out of town for a week. Never mind that the economy is in the tank, or that you'll use just under half of your vacation days at once-it's time to go to the beach! But wait....before you put the kids in that minivan (小面包车) and speed off: there's a greener way. Don't Travel as Far In one of those special instances where environmentalism saves you a ton of money, the simplest piece of advice is to stay close to home, or, even stay at home, which most Americans aren't likely to follow: if you live in a major city, there are probably loads of museums, parks, baseball games, and restaurants that you haven't been to. But if you MUST travel-try to stay within 100-150 miles from home. Your wallet, and the planet, will thank you. Find a Green Hotel This may seem like a strange task, but it's not-check the environmentally friendly hotels. They're standing ready to assist in your eco-traveling and committed to reducing waste on the planet. Take the Train Rail travel isn't quite dead in the U.S.,which is good, because it features some of the lowest pollution of any form of transport. In order of most polluting, it goes: airplanes, cars, trains, and coach buses-but I don't believe many people think of Creyhound (美国灰狗巴士) as a good way to get around anymore. Buy Local Souvenirs This is hard, seeing how we're nationally addicted to plastic toys, but buy local goods when you travel. Supporting a local artist doesn't just do more for the economy of the place that you're visiting, and it also cuts the cost of transporting all of those mass-produced souvenirs. And besides, taking home art, or cooking ingredients from a place you can't get at home, is far more interesting. |
1. What does the underlined phrase "in the tank" mean? |
A. In good situation. B. Decreasing rapidly. C. Increasing rapidly. D. In a dilemma. |
2. We may infer from the passage that the greenest way to enjoy one's summer vacation is to ____. |
A. stay at home B. get out of town C. go to the beach D. find a green hotel |
3. According to the passage, ____ are the least polluting form of transport. |
A. airplanes B. trains C. cars D. coach buses |
4. Buying local souvenirs cannot ____. |
A. support local artists B. do more for the local economy C. save a ton of our money D. cut the cost of transporting all of those mass-produced souvenirs |

Beggars are often seen sitting by the side of a street with heads bowed as people pass them by. Some ask people passing by for a small amount of money and some just sit and wait to be given money. A few use aggressive(侵略性的) behaviour to earn money. To solve the problem of aggressive begging, an "alternative giving" plan has been suggested. Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway station. It is aimed at encouraging people not to give money directly to beggars but instead to give money generously to local homeless causes. Supporters of this plan think it will be an effective way to solve the beggars' alcohol and drug problems. But the police are against the plan. They argue that beggars who do not receive cash may commit crimes to satisfy their own needs. The homeless. charity (慈善机构) says that the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that in a certain degree imaginative and positive plans may help to create local understanding and sympathy (同情). Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food and clothes. Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries. Governments must play an active part in solving this problem. Training beggars to work and helping them to find appropriate jobs is one choice. This is especially true for developing countries where many low-skill jobs exist. The public should also be educated to see a beggar not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help.
