         Jason
What I like best is seeing Arsenal win and playing football. If I am feeling sad I will play a football game
on my Play Station 2. The best day I have ever had was when I finished first in the 800-metre race at my
secondary school. It was a school record, although I didn't know that at the time. My family makes me happy,
    too.
         Antonio
My little sister makes me sad because she always tells tales on me to my mum. If I am having a bad day,
food cheers me up. I like chili con came and sweet chili crisps. It makes me happy because I want to be big
    and have lots of energy.
         Usman
I haven't done anything very exciting in my life but one of my best achievements is that I got a good report
from my school this year, because last year I got a bad one. People on TV make me laugh, particularly Eddie

things I like doing are singing, dancing, hanging out with my friends and just being lively and funny.
         Kinzey
The most exciting thing I have ever done in my life was when I went abseiling in Wales. But that was a one-
off. The things I do all the time are playing football, watching movies and going to places with my friends. I

As my dad unwrapped the new bicycle helmet (头盔) that I got him for his birthday, I realized that a
number of people ride their bicycles every day without the protection of a helmet.
Due to cold winters across the country, riding has become increasingly dangerous as many roads have
potholes and are torn-up (磨损的). Not everyone realizes that there are laws requiring the wearing of helmets
    in many places.
Where I live, there has been a law in place since October l, 1992 stating that cyclists of all ages are required
to wear helmets. Unfortunately, accidents can happen to the best of riders. My dad has been a cyclist for many
years, and he often rides around my county and to Rockland Lake State Park.
One afternoon, as he was just entering the park, he lost control of his bicycle and flew off and landed on a
nearby patch of grass, breaking his helmet into pieces and losing consciousness. When he was just awakening,
a lovely couple found him and brought him back to our house, where he attempted to recap the events leading
up to his fall. Later that day, a CAT scan revealed that he had a concussion(脑震荡). That evening, while my
dad was showing me the pieces of his broken helmet, we both came to a shocking realization.
If he had not worn his helmet, he probably would have cracked his skull and perhaps died. Today, when
my dad and I go out cycling, the wearing of our helmets is not even a question. Regardless of age, everyone
should wear a helmet whenever they get on a bicycle.
    1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TURE?
    A. Young men needn't wear helmets.
    B. The writer's father didn't wear a helmet until the writer bought him one.
    C. People don't have to wear helmets on smooth surface roads.
    D. Accidents do not happen to the best cyclists.
    2. In the writer's opinion, why should people wear bicycle helmets?
    A. Because a law requires them to do so.
    B. Because many people like wearing bicycle helmets.
    C. Because people have realized the importance of wearing helmets.
    D. Because the conditions of roads are very poor and it is dangerous to ride on them.
    3. The underlined part "we both came to a shocking realization" in Paragraph means "____".
    A. we understood how lucky the dad was to have worn a helmet
    B. we were shocked to see the broken helmet
    C. we realized that young people needn't wear helmets
    D. only old people should wear helmets
    4. From the accident that happened to the writer's dad, we can infer that ____.
    A. the cyclists should follow the law
    B. his dad was not worried about this accident
    C. it is necessary for cyclists to wear helmets
    D. everyone should care about life

Three types of pangolins (穿山甲) exist in Africa - the giant pangolin, the tree pangolin and the most
widespread, the ground pangolin. Pangolins have small heads and long, broad tails. They are toothless and
have no external ears, although their hearing is good. Their sense of smell is well-developed, but their sight
is poor. The weight of the scales (鳞片) and skin make up about 20% of their weight.
The common pangolin prefers sandy soils and is found in woodlands and savannas (热带草原), within
    reach of water.
All pangolins can roll themselves into a ball to defend themselves. The cutting action of their scales protects
them too. Pangolins also have scent glands (臭腺) that release strong, foul smelling secretions. Pangolins are
normally alone. Females are usually alone with their young. The young are 6 inches long and weigh 12 ounces
at birth. Their pale, soft scales begin to harden by the second day. The baby is folded in the mother's lap or
rolled-up body. It is nursed for 3 to 4 months and begins to eat termites (白蚁) at 1 month. At this time the
infant begins to accompany the mother, perhaps riding on the base of her tail. If the mother senses danger the
baby slips under her and is protected when she rolls up her body.
Pangolins use their sense of smell to locate termite and ant nests. They dig up the insects with their claws
and use their extremely long tongues to eat them.

    B. At 2 months old.
    C. At 2-3 months old.
    D. At 3-4 months old.
    4. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

The week I turned 50, my marriage came to a sudden end. My house, furniture and everything I'd owned
was sold to pay debts that I didn't even know I had. In a week I had lost my husband, my home and my
parents who had refused to accept a divorce (离婚) in the family. I'd lost everything except my four teenage
children. I used every penny I had to buy five plane tickets from Missouri to Hawaii. Everyone said I was crazy
to think I could just run off to an island and survive. I was afraid they were right.
Knowing that no one in the world was going to help us, I rented a cheap apartment. I worked 18 hours a
day and lost 30 pounds because I lived on one meal a day. One night as I walked alone on the beach, I saw the
red orange glow of the lava (火山岩) pouring out of Kilauea Volcano in the distance. It was time to live my
    imagination!
The next day, I quit my job and invested my last paycheck in art supplies and began doing what I loved. I
hadn't painted a picture in 15 years. I wondered if I could still paint. My hands trembled the first time I picked
up a brush. But before an hour had passed, I was lost in the colors spreading across the canvas (画布) in front
of me. And as soon as I started believing in myself, other people started believing in me, too. The first painting
sold for $ 1500 before I even had time to frame it.
The past six years have been filled with adventures. My children and I have gone swimming with dolphins,
watched whales and hiked around the crater (火山口) edge of the volcano. We wake up every morning with
the ocean in front of us and the volcano behind us. The dream I had more than 40 years ago is now reality. I'm
living freely and happily ever after.

Complainers have a complaint about everything in their life. This usually comes from the fact that they
are unsatisfied or angry about their own personal lives. The complainer has a need for their concerns to be
accepted. Whether it is in their professional or personal life, the complainer can't have peace of mind until
someone listens to their concerns. They feel dissatisfied and they don't just want things to change-they want
to be heard and understood. The key to effectively dealing with a complainer is by using your active listening
skills and trying to understand what their interests and needs are. They want to be heard and acknowledged-
    not ignored and argued with.
Listen to the concerns. It's not enough sometimes just to fix the problems. The person has a psychological
need for someone to acknowledge his or her concerns. Let them get all of these piled frustrations (挫折) out
of their system before you address the problem. Listen and accept what they have to say. Encourage them to
keep on talking until all these frustrations have been let out.
Empathy (同情) with them. Imagine yourself walking around in their shoes and see the situation from
their point of view. Empathy is an important tool that you can use to serve cooperation. Use empathetic
statements such as, "If l were in your shoes, I'd be really angry, too."Reword their concerns back in your
own words. This lets them know that you have been listening and have understood everything correctly.
Repeating is also a powerful agreement-building tool.
Ask them what they would like you to do. In most cases, you will already know what the person wants,
but ask them what they would like you to do because it lets them walk away happy.
    1. By saying "If I were in your shoes, I'd be really angry, too.", the listener means ____.
    A. If I put on your shoes, I would be angry too
    B. If I wore your shoes, I would also be happy too
    C. If I were in your situation, I would also be angry
    D. If I knew the situation of your shoes, I would not wear them
    2. According to the passage, what's the main purpose of the complainer's complaints?
    A. They want to have an argument with someone.
    B. They are concerned about others' life.
    C. They are dissatisfied with both their job and their life.
    D. They need a listener and understanding.
    3. According to the passage, what would you best say before getting away from a complainer if you were
        a listener?
    A. I'm sorry to hear that, but it's no use complaining like that.
    B. I'm also unsatisfied with my own job.
    C. Pardon? What job would you like better?
    D. What can I do for you?
    4. The author writes the passage mainly to ____.

    B. teach readers to be patient with complainers
    C. help deal with complainers' problems
    D. help readers listen to complaints better

As De Witt Wallace lay in bed recovering from injuries that he unfortunately came by in World War I, he
found there was a wealth of interesting information to read. Realizing few people would have the time to get
through all this information, he knew exactly ____. In 1920, this young American presented a sample magazine
containing condensed (浓缩的) articles to publishers across America. All turned him down.
De Witt was not discouraged. He and his wife Lila Bell Acheson published the first issue of Reader's Digest
in February 1922. Working from home, the Wallaces printed 5,000 copies, which were sold by mail to 1,500
people and priced at 25 cents. From these small beginnings grew the world's most widely read magazine.
The magazine became popular and, by 1935, sales had topped one million. In 1938, the first international
edition was published in the United Kingdom. During World WarⅡ, editions were published for the first time
in Latin America and Sweden After the war Reader's Dig Test moved into Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark,
Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, South Africa and Switzerland. In 1950, Reader's Digest published its
condensed books (now known as Select Editions in Australia). In 1959, music, the first non-print product line,
was introduced. In 1962, Reader's Digest revolutionized direct mail by introducing easy-to-enter Sweepstakes
and a year later the first Reader's Digest general book was published. In 1986, video was added to the Reader's
    Digest product.
In 1973, the Wallaces gave up active management of Reader's Digest. De Witt died in 1981, aged 91; Lila in,
1984, aged 94. With no heirs to the Wallace empire to take over, Reader's Digest became a public company in
the early 1990s and is now headed by a Chief Executive Office and Chairman of the Board. Reader's Digest is
one of the most successful publishing stories in the history of global magazines.
