A shocking number of children are overweight and obese, and doctors are seeing increasingly high levels of cholesterol (胆固醇) in children, even those with no family history of high cholesterol. To help your kids maintain a healthy diet and healthy cholesterol levels, you need to do the following. Pack their lunches That way you can at least try to ensure they get something healthy instead of the fried and starchy (富含 淀粉的) food that dominate most school cafeterias. The three most common food ordered in elementary school cafeterias are ground beef (碎肉), chicken nuggets (鸡肉块) and cheese. Limit fast food Set a limit of no more than one or two fast-food meals a month, and when you do make a fast-food visit, push the salads, plain baked potatoes, and broiled chicken. If the kids must have hamburgers, order them without cheese. Forget white White bread, white rice, white pasta, that is. Serve them peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat bread and meatballs on whole wheat pasta. Make it easy Cut up a bowl of fruit and put is before your TV-gazing kids. They'll eat it as if it were popcorn (爆米花). Better yet, turn the TV off and serve the fruit to them after they've finished a bike ride around the block. Set an example The best way to make sure your kids live a heart-healthy lifestyle is to live one yourself. That could be more rewarding to see benefits not only to your cholesterol, but to your children's as well. |

Mead Vale Community Primary School opened in new buildings and spacious grounds in September 1977, within a fairly small mature estate community. Times have changed, and we now cover a far greater area and children travel to the school from as far a field as Benwell. Parents now have the choice of selecting schools for their children's education and many parents choose Mead Vale. We are a Community Primary School administered by the School Governing Board which is responsible to the North Somerset Council Education Board. Present school roll is around 415 with space for 420 in total. We are delighted that we were awarded "Beacon Status" in 2002 and are pleased to share our expertise with other schools. Last year we had visits from as far away as South Africa and Spain. We are a primary school covering ages 4-11 and on transfer from here parents usually choose Word Comprehensive, Priory Comprehensive or Wyvern Comprehensive. We feel the advantage of a Primary School is the continuity of education from 4-11 and the greatly reduced trauma involved in moving schools from Infant to Junior or First to Middle at the age of 7. We are convinced of the benefit of this and deliberately structure the school in phases at four levels: Foundation: the reception year-a separate special early years curriculum; Years l & 2: the first two years of the national curriculum- previously infants; Years 3 & 4: the third and fourth year of the national curriculum-previously lower juniors; Years 5 & 6: the fifth and sixth years of the national curriculum-previously upper juniors. In each phase the children stay with the same teacher. It is likely that they will have only 4 different class teachers during their seven years with us. |

A. he will open a new school covering a far greater area B. he is proud of the achievements the school has gained C. he will let the children have four teachers each year D. he thinks these seven years will reduce trauma involved in the transfer |
2. What does the underlined word "phase" mean in the last paragraph? |
A. Year. B. Term. C. Part. D. Stage. |
3. The relationship among the following is ____. Mead Vale-M; Community Primary School-C; the School Governing Board-S; North Somerset Council Education Board- N; UK-U |
A. U-N-C-S-M B. U-N-S-C-M C. N-U-C-S-M D. N-U-S-C-M |
4. What shall a primary school do with the education according to the passage? |
A. Open in new buildings and spacious grounds; get a "Beacon Status" award. B. Have a "Beacon Status" award; carry on the continuity of education. C. Carry on the continuity of education; reduce trauma involved in transferring schools. D. Reduce trauma involved in transferring schools; divide the students into different phases. |

A popular student in her small high school, Katie started college expecting to do well in her courses and be best friends with her roommates. But things didn't turn out that way. Psych 101, the course she thought would be a first-semester favorite, turned out to be a struggle. And her roommates were as different from Katie as the student restaurant' s mystery meat was from her mom' s roasted pork. Living away from home tends to be the toughest adjustment for first-year students. You may feel homesick in your first weeks or months. It can help to call, write, or email your parents and friends making them know how you're doing. You can also talk with your roommates. As first-year students themselves, they're probably experiencing many of the same fears and worries that you're dealing with. But what if you don't get along well with your roommates? In some cases, it can be a good thing if you and your roommates aren't much alike. Different views on things may be helpful, so respect your differences no matter what they are. If you and your roommates don't get along well, it can help to find someone who you feel does understand you, which should be easy on a campus with so many people. Many schools have student organization nights where all of the campus clubs gather and promote their organizations, so you can meet people with the same interests there as you. You'll also meet tons of people in class or in your dorm building. As homesickness, painful throats, sprained (扭伤的) ankles and wisdom teeth that act up are common among college students, you should check out your student guidebook or your school's website to find out information about the university health center. If you think you cannot deal with your problems, make a stop at the school counseling (咨询) center. First- year troubles are something the counselors know well. You can get help there. |

Across the world, 1.1 billion people have no access to clean drinking water. More than 2.5 billion people lack basic sanitation. The combination proves deadly. Each year, diseases related to inadequate water and sanitation kill between 2 and 5 million people and cause an estimated 80 percent of all sicknesses in the developing world. Safe drinking water is a precondition for health and the fight against child death rate, inequality between men and women, and poverty. Consider these facts: The average distance that women in Africa and Asia walk to collect water is 6 kilometers. Only 58 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa are drinking safe water, and only 37 percent of children in South Asia have access to even a basic toilet. Each year in India alone, 73 million working days are lost to water-borne diseases. Here are three ways you can help: (1) Write Congress Current U. S. foreign aid for drinking water and sanitation budgets only one dollar per year per American citizen. Few members of Congress have ever received a letter from voters about clean drinking water abroad. (2) Sponsor a project with a faith-based organization Many U.S. religious groups already sponsor water and sanitation projects, working with partner organizations abroad. Simply putting a single project by a U.S. organization can make safe water a reality for thousands of people. (3) Support nonprofit water organizations Numerous U.S.-based nonprofits work skillfully abroad in community-led projects related to drinking water and sanitation. Like the sample of non-profits noted as follows, some organizations are large, other small-scale, some operate worldwide, others are devoted to certain areas in Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Support them generously. |

4. What information will probably be provided following the last paragraph? |
A. A variety of companies and their worldwide operation. B. A list of non-profit water organizations to make contact with. C. Some ways to get financial aids from U.S. Congress. D. A few water resources exploited by some world-famous organizations. |
