Slowly I climbed into the driver's seat of the old brown pontiac. "Hi, Miss Caroline!" cried the three
passengers, my friend Annie and her two children. No, I'm not Annie's driver. I'm just a friend.
Let me explain. I'm 68, retired and live alone. Annie's 27, works as a part-time bank teller and is married
with two kids. We're different, but we have one very important need in common-a car. I couldn't afford to
fix my own car and the bus didn't go everywhere I needed to go.
A friend had a suggestion. "My daughter Annie's been using my old pontiac while her husband job-hunts,"
he said, "He got laid off and I know they could use help with gas. Maybe you two could share the car."
Share a car? We Americans are pretty territorial about our automobiles. Still, need overrode (压倒)
nervousness and I gave Annie a call. We quickly worked out a schedule. Three days a week for me, the rest
    for her.
Having wheels again was a huge help. Soon the car brought something more. Driving each other home
on the days we switched, Annie and I talked about everything.
She had plenty of worries. Besides her finances, her dad's health was failing. However, she lifted my spirits!
She once said, "Life doesn't always turn out the way I want, but I trust things will work out. And they do.
    Just like this car!"
Annie and her family moved to Los Angeles. I still borrow the pontiac from her dad, who is healthy once
again. Now, whenever I drive the car, I think about Annie, and about how a simple exchange born of economic
need can become such a blessing. Like Annie says, life doesn't always turn out the way we want. But that
doesn't mean it doesn't turn out good.
    1. What did the writer have in common with Annie?
    A. They were both in financial difficulty.
    B. They both lacked love and care in life.
    C. They had both been searching for a job.
    D. They were both too poor to own a car.
    2. Who was the real owner of the old brown pontiac?
    A. The writer.
    B. Annie.
    C. A bank teller.
    D. Annie's father.
    3. Annie impressed the writer much mainly because _____.
    A. she had a deep love for her dad
    B. she had many worries in her life
    C. she had a positive attitude to life
    D. she knew how to lift others' spirits

When you think of success, you think of relative achievements in your own world. Each element of your
world is important to you, and there is no need to compare with others. You cannot affect the success of
others; you can affect your own success.
Success is very much achievable to everybody. Believe that and you have taken the first step. If you do
not believe in yourself, then building self-esteem is your first task. However, believing in your ability to achieve
whatever you want to succeed in, is very important if you are not to be held back by self-doubt throughout
    your journey to success.
There are many things that will affect your ability to succeed, and it is best to focus on those under your
immediate control. Once you do that, then the characteristics you develop can be applied to becoming
successful in a range of activities.
What is important to you is that, as you start to reach milestones in your ambitions, you should appreciate
your own achievements. Appreciating yourself will strengthen your self-confidence and your determination
    to succeed.
Some of the key characteristics you will find in those who are successful are perseverance, prepared to
research, plan, work hard and practice a lot even when things do not seem to be going well, and an ability to
recover and learn from setbacks. At the beginning of whatever you are trying to succeed in, a strong vision
of your future, planning, and setting yourself achievable tar gets can all play an important role.
All these qualities, skills and characteristics can be learned and developed. But it is up to you to get things
started. Those who do not start travel nowhere. For others, life can be a continuous journey of fulfillment.
    1. According to the passage, if you want to achieve success, what should you do first?
    A. Don't compare with others.
    B. Bring everything under control.
    C. Find out what you have in mind.
    D. Feel confident about your ability.
    2. Why should you appreciate your own achievements according to the passage?
    A. It will allow you to recover from past failures.
    B. It will remind you of the vision of your future.
    C. It will motivate you to continue pursuing success.
    D. It will help you develop your characteristics in everything.
    3. The underlined word "setbacks" (in paragraph 5) probably means _____.
    A. failures
    B. troubles
    C. hesitation
    D. depression
    4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
    A. If you are stuck where you are, you cannot travel far.
    B. If you don't start trying, you'll never embrace success.
    C. If you are brave enough, you can get whatever you want.
    D. If you don't study, you can never reach the destination.

Have you ever imagined what the world will be like in the near future? A recent study shows that the
world in 2100 will be more crowded, more polluted and less stable ecologically than the world we live in
now. Visible ahead is serious stress involving population, resource and environment. Despite greater food
output, people in the world will be poorer in many ways than they are today.
For hundreds of millions of the extremely poor, the outlook for food and other necessities of life will
be no better, for many it will be worse.
While the economies of the developing countries are expected to grow at a faster rate than those of
the industrialized nation, the total national product per head in most less developed countries remains low.
The existing gap between the rich and poor nations will further widen.
World food production is estimated to increase by 90 percent from 2000 to 2100. Most of that increase
goes to the countries that already have relative higher per-head food consumption. Mean-while, per-head
consumption of food in the developing countries will scarcely improve or will actually fall far below the
present inadequate level. What is worse is that prices for food are expected to double.
As a result, many less developed countries will have increasing difficulties meeting energy needs. For
the one quarter of mankind that depends primarily on wood for fuel, the outlook is not hopeful.
Regional water shortage will become more severe. In the 1970-2100 period population growth will
require twice as much water as it does today in nearly half the world. Still greater increases would be needed
to improve standards of living. Development of new water supply will become more costly.
    1. According to the passage, in 2100 although output of food will be greater, _____.
    A. people will have sufficient food supplies
    B. the resource will become more than enough
    C. in most developing countries people will have less food than they have today
    D. the living standards of the world's population will improve greatly
    2. According to the author, in 2100 for many poor people, _____.
    A. things will get even worse
    B. things will be a little better
    C. it will be necessary for them to improve their housing
    D. it will be impossible to obtain enough necessities of life
    3. In the 2000-2100 period, the large proportion of global increase of food production goes _____.
    A. to 90 percent as estimated
    B. to any country in the world that needs it
    C. to developing countries
    D. to those countries that already have high per-head consumption
    4. The passage is mainly concerned about _____.
    A. the future problems in the world
    B. water and air pollution
    C. water and food shortages
    D. food production and consumption
