I'm a volunteer for The American Diabetes (糖尿病) Association(ADA). I am on the planning committee
for a one-day cycling event called "Tour de Cure". It's sponsored by the ADA and the profits( 利润) of this
event are used for diabetes research and program funding.
While I was talking to people about our "Tour de Cure" event in downtown Denver one day, I met a young
boy wearing a red hat from Oklahoma named Jack. I think he was 10-11 years old. It was the jar of red
rubber wrist bands (The American Diabetes Association diabetes awareness wrist bands) that caught Jack's
eye. These are the bands we give out to people who have diabetes, who have a family member who has
diabetes or to those people who know someone who has diabetes.
People wear these for a variety of reasons: in memory of a loved one, to promote diabetes awareness and
to show support for people who have diabetes. Jack walked towards me eyeing the jar and then he said, "Can
I have one of those?" So, I replied to Jack, "Do you have someone in your family who has diabetes?" Jack
said,"No, but I know someone who has diabetes." So I gave him one to wear for his friend.
Then, Jack began looking at our "Tour de Cure" photo album. When Jack had finished and was about to
go, he looked up at me and said,"Would you take a donation?" I was surprised to hear this from a
10-11-year-old boy, but I said, "Yes." I took the lid of our donation container off as Jack was reaching into
his pocket. His hand came out clinched around the donation he was about to make. It was my impression that
what he had in his hand was everything he had in his pocket, as he did not count it. After Jack dropped his
donation into the container, I gave him a high-five, as I so often do to acknowledge an accomplishment or
an appreciation. I also gave him a handshake before he parted. After Jack left, I counted his gift-$3.00. I then
realized that he gave all he had, without counting the cost.
The heart of a child made me smile that day. Thank you, Jack.
    1. What attracted Jack to walk towards the author?
    A. The jar
    B. The hat
    C. The photo album
    D. The donation container
    2. It was probable that Jack wore a wrist band to _____.
    A. prove his confidence in fighting diabetes
    B. promote his strong diabetes awareness
    C. express his love for his family members
    D. support his friend who has diabetes
    3. That Jack wanted to make a donation surprised the author because the author thought_____.
    A. Jack was telling a lie to him
    B. Jack was playing a joke on him
    C. Jack was brave enough to do so
    D. Jack was a great person for his age
    4. What would be the best title of the passage?
    A. A lovely boy I met
    B. The heart of a child
    C. A moving day I spent
    D. The donation of a child

Fish have started protecting us. It seems unlikely, but the Intelligent Automation Corporation has developed
a system that uses fish to protect our water supplies. Cities and towns share water with millions of people, so
it's important that the water is clean and safe to drink. Bluegills, which are small enough to fit in your hand, are
the fish that are protecting our water. They are common freshwater fish native to America and are also known
as bream or sunfish. According to the Associated Press, the bluegills were originally used by the Army to make
sure water was safe. Now San Francisco, New York City, Washington D.C and several other cities use the bluegill monitoring system. The bluegill system works by constantly filling the fish tank with city or town water. A
small group of bluegills swim in the local water and are closely monitored.
Bluegills are very sensitive to their environment. Changes in the environment cause their behavior and
breathing patterns to change. They cough if the water is polluted. Fish cough by flexing their gills (鳃) to get
rid of unwanted particles, like grain of sand, from their breathing passages. If the bluegills are coughing the
computer sends an alarm via email.
The bluegills in New York City discovered an diesel spill (柴油外溢) hours before the usual monitors.
Adding the bluegill system to regular water protection methods resulted in an early warning and safer water.
    1. People use the bluegill system to monitor water supplies_____.
    A. because they have high sensibility to their environment
    B. because they are used to swimming in the fresh water
    C. because they can cough by means of their gills
    D. because they are able to send e-mails by computers
    2. Which of the following statements about Bluegills is NOT true?
    A. They are about the size of a human hand.
    B. They are freshwater fish easily found in America.
    C. They were used to safeguard water in the army.
    D. They are smarter than any other living thing on earth.
    3. People decide whether the water is polluted by means of _____.
    A. information sent by the Army
    B. the warning e-mail the computer sends
    C. observing the activities of bluegills
    D. constantly filling the fish tank with water

A good education is very important for the healthy development of a child. But the way in which education is understood has changed completely. In the past, stern and rough ways were used to bring up a child, and unfeeling rules were supposed to create the excellent personality of the typical gentleman. Nowadays, society is much more open-minded and it does not put a great value on being so strict with children although this doesn't mean that opinions regarding this subject do not differ.
On the one hand, there are those in favor of a strict teacher and the narrow-minded people who consider that only a rough hand is able to properly educate a child. Firstly, according to them, children should fear their teachers, as this is the only way in which they will pay attention. In addition to that, they think that a pupil will never learn because he enjoys doing so and takes interest in what he is doing, but only because that is what he is supposed to do if he doesn't want a low grade.
On the other hand, there are people who believe that only by having a friendly attitude and listening to the opinions of their pupils can a teacher do his job at a high standard. Their opinion is that there has to be a connection between teachers and students before any satisfying result can be achieved. Luckily, more and more teachers understand this fact and are doing their best to get over the strict rules and get in touch with their students.
However, this does not mean that a teacher shouldn't be a bit tougher when he feels that things are getting out of hand. All in all, I must say that a good teacher is a teacher that has the ability to be kind and strict at the same time, thus winning the respect and interest of his students.
    1. Which of the following words can replace the underlined word "stern" in the first paragraph?
    A. Strict
    B. Ridiculous
    C. Unhealthy
    D. Impolite
    2. Narrow-minded people think that students will only learn because of _____.
    A. their interest in knowledge
    B. their desire to get high marks
    C. their dislike of teachers
    D. their parents' will
    3. Which of the following is NOT an opinion held by people who believe a teacher should be friendly?
    A. Teachers should lower the standards for students
    B. Teachers should have a kind attitude to students
    C. Teachers should pay attention to their students' opinions
    D. Teachers should often communicate with students.
    4. According to the author, a teacher should ______.
    A. always be tough and strict
    B. always be kind and soft
    C. often be kind, but be strict if necessary
    D. often be strict, but be kind if necessary

Italians like to say that when it comes to alcohol, they have a sipping (小酌) culture rather than a drinking
culture. That means that while Italians may enjoy a glass of wine or beer, they don't usually get very drunk.
That's not true any more. The new study by the Italian National Health Institute found that 63 percent of
Italians under age 18 get drunk on the weekends. Now, the city of Milan has created a law that will stop anyone under 16 from buying alcohol. Anyone who sells or gives alcohol to a person under 16 can be fined up to $700.
Young people who feel that the new law is unfair should go to the US for some perspective (观点). The US
has the highest drinking age in the world: It's illegal for anyone under 21 to buy alcohol, and stores or restaurants that are caught selling alcohol to people under the legal age risk losing their licenses.
Many young Americans complain that the drinking laws are unfair: They are allowed to vote in elections and
join the army at age 18, so why wait another three years just to buy a bottle of beer?
These young people have found help in an unusual place. Last year, more than 100 presidents of US
universities joined together to ask lawmakers to consider changing the drinking age. They argued that the law
doesn't stop underage college kids from getting drunk - it just makes them want to drink more.
For now, the law seems unlikely to change. But US teenagers who want alcohol can go north to Canada,
where the drinking age is 18-19, or south to Mexico where the legal age is 18. Throughout much of Asia,
Africa and Europe, the legal drinking age ranges 16-18.
In plenty of places though, the official drinking age is ignored, and even young children can buy alcohol if
they have the money to pay for it.
No matter how old you are, you should always be responsible with alcohol. Teenagers in Milan are now
learning that their reckless (不顾后果的) drinking behavior may come at a high price. By Ariel Lown Lewiton,
    21st Teens Staff

    A. aims to keep Italy's sipping culture alive
    B. forbids selling alcohol to people under 16

    D. has reduced the number of underage youths getting drunk
    2. Which of the following places has the lowest drinking age?
    A. Milan
    B. New York
    C. Mexico
    D. Canada
    3. Many US university presidents want lawmakers to consider changing the drinking age because ______.
    A. they've received complaints from many young Americans about the unfairness of the laws
    B. they agree that people old enough to vote and join the army should be allowed to drink
    C. they believe the law is pushing underage youths toward alcohol instead of stopping them
    D. they don't want to see US teenagers going to neighboring countries for a drink
    4. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. Restaurants in the US don't sell alcohol to people under 21 for fear of a $700 fine.
    B. The author thinks that US teenagers should go to Canada or Mexico to drink.
    C. In many places, shop owners don't mind selling alcohol to underage customers.
    D. Teens in Milan have to pay a lot of money for their reckless drinking behavior.

1    Very few people choose ideal and perfect jobs for themselves and they do not do the same job for
the rest of their lives. With technology and everything else changing so fast, it's ridiculous to expect to stay
in one job from the time you leave school to the time you retire. Even staying in the same company can be
    a huge challenge.   2
The first thing you should consider is what kinds of things you enjoy doing and what you are naturally
good at. You have to look at practicality issues. You have to look at what you like to do and take a realistic
look at whether the market is ever going to pay you an income for doing it. Your loving doing something
doesn't mean that the world is going to love giving you money for doing it.   3   And then narrow the list
down by deciding which are at your level.
4   For example, if you want to be a doctor, you must graduate with all the papers saying you can be
a doctor. The job requires a high education and an extreme amount of practice.
Many community colleges have tests that tell you what kinds of work you'd be happy to do.   5   For
example, do you want to travel in your career or stay at home? How much money do you want to make?
After you answer these questions, the computer will show you what careers you would be suited to. Keep
in mind that what interests you at twenty isn't likely to be the same as what interests you at forty. You would
also find some tests online. These will give you some ideas you have never considered.
    A. Then how will you choose your first career?
    B. What type of jobs are you interested in most?
    C. So pick a number of different things that you love at first.
    D. Most people's jobs change at least once or twice in their lifetime.
    E. They ask you a series of multiple-choice (多项选择的) questions.
    F. However, many companies will offer you job training before you start the work.
    G. Another thing to consider is how much education or special training s required.
