What are the basic elements (要素) of good manners? Certainly a strong sense of justice is one; courtesy
(谦恭) is often   1   more than a highly developed sense of fair play. A friend of mine once told me about a
time he was   2   along a narrow, unpaved (未铺柏油的) mountain road.    3   was another car that produced

Another element of courtesy is empathy (善解人意), a  10  that enables a person to see into the mind or
heart of someone else, to understand the pain or  11  there and to do something to minimize it. A man  12

14 . He asked a young busboy to help him. The boy took the bottle, turned his back  15  and loosened the
cap without difficulty. Then he  16   it again. Turning back to the man, he  17  to make great efforts to open
the bottle without success.  18  he took it into the kitchen and returned shortly, saying that he had managed
to loosen it-but only with a pair of pliers (钳子).
Yet another element of politeness is the ability to treat all people  19 , in spite of all status or importance.
20   when you have doubts about some people, act as if they are worthy of your best manners. You may
also be astonished to find out what they really are. Courtesy is the key to a happier world.

Students and professionals can all benefit from reading scholarly research. While many works may be of
a technical nature, some of the best research is published in professional journals. While not all journals get
published on the Internet, the trend toward the electronic format is growing. You probably also have free
access to some of the online sources outlined below, but many don't know where they can consult online
sources when in need of excellent research.
          Science
The journal Science is perhaps the most prestigious science journal. This journal is also well known
enough to be featured on media outlets. It has all the latest news. Science is also interested in scientific policy,
and frequently publishes articles that report the achievement of technology and science in general. Free partial
    access is available after registration.
Proceedings from the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)
The world famous scholar reviewed journal has its articles and reviews on their website. While reading
the abstracts of articles is free, PNAS charges for downloading the entire article in full. There is also an option
for paying a flat rate to view several articles for a week-long period. There are some "open access" articles
which are available for download free of charge. Nature Nature is another popular and famous journal. Nature
has a wide approach publishing scientific papers on a wide variety of topics.
Nature in fact is considered interdisciplinary (各学科间的), going beyond its name which would seem to
show it only belongs to the natural sciences. Nature is aimed at researchers and academics, but readers can
find out about major breakthroughs through summaries and other notes that appear in this weekly publication.
While there is an effort to provide so-called "open access", it is at the moment limited. Students and those
with academic access can access these major journals for free because of contractual relationships.

    3. According to the passage, it's free of charge for us to download ______.
    A. the entire article of the PNAS in full
    B. the entire journal Nature
    C. one article of the journal Science
    D. "open access " PNAS articles
    4. This passage mainly tells us _______.
    A. how to publish professional papers
    B. about a few academic magazines in the world
    C. about free access to some of the online sources

Many people turn to the web for health advice. Women use the Internet to look for health information
for themselves and their family significantly more than men, research has found. The study, by independent
research company Datamonitor, says that for this reason health sites should make greater efforts to appeal
to women by covering their health concerns.
The researchers, who quizzed 4,531 adults across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US,
found that websites have become just as important as some off-line sources of health information. Fifty-seven
percent of those who looked for health information in the past 12 months consulted Internet sources.
Report author Yvonne MacPherson said,"A distinct advantage of the Internet as a source of health
information is that information is easily accessible and can be read in private and at the leisure of the Internet
user." "Good health sites are not meant to replace interaction with a physician. Rather, they help patients
prepare for appointments and take more responsibility for their health." He added.
Currently, 32-34% of adults aged 18 to 54 used the Internet to search for health information. This number
decreases to 27% in the 55 to 64 age group, and further to 14% in the 65 and over age group. Young Internet
users often conduct online health research on behalf of older family members who do not use the Internet.
However, Datamonitor says that the audience for health information online will grow naturally as the
population ages, and more and more people grow up with the net. It recommends that website operators
focus their efforts on building a good long-term relationship with their existing consumers, rather than on
    attempting to attract non-Internet users.
    1. What is the main subject discussed in the passage?

    A. The popularity of health websites.
    B. The importance of health advice.
    C. The advantage of the Internet sources.
    D. The increase of people's health concerns.

    2. According to Yvonne MacPherson, health information online could be described as ______.
    A. acceptable
    B. convenient
    C. accurate
    D. abundant
    3. Which of the following is NOT true?
    A. Health websites should pay more attention to women's health concerns.
    B. A good health site should be able to replace interaction with a doctor.
    C. The old tend to make less use of the Internet for health information.
    D. The young may be the potential audience of health information online.

In Kenya, educational and career opportunities are almost non-existent for people born with physical
challenges. They face many forms of discrimination-including beliefs that their condition was caused by
a curse. But one father whose son Brain was born deaf, mute and blind aims to change all that. Joseph
Shiroko started a school four years ago that teaches students who can not hear, speak and who have very
low or no vision a wide range of skills to support themselves.
The baby clothes the students knit (编织) are well known in the local community. And the school has
developed a reputation for its dried smoked meat products.
Brain Resource Center, a boarding school, teaches deaf and blind young Kenyans from across the
country a variety of skills they can use to earn a living.
        "We have a number of philosophies that inform what we are doing: accepting these people; loving them;
giving them opportunities." said founder Joseph Shiroko.
Teachers, most of whom are graduates from the school or are themselves physically challenged, work
    with students.
Mary Kerubo, 22, has a passion for knitting sweaters, which she plans to continue in her village.
"I feel comfortable here because Sween - my teacher understands me," said Kerubo. "Even if I do not
see well, she always repeats her lessons again and again so that I may understand how to make sweaters.
I know I will make it."
Kerubo's teacher, Sween Lyaka, was among the first graduates of Brain Resource Center four years
ago. She says her students have a lot of unrecognized potential.
Sween says in the future, she plans to purchase four sewing machines that she will use to teach students
and produce and sell sweaters in her home village.
The center also works with students' families to set up projects that will continue after the students
    graduate.
Founder Joseph Shiroko's son, Brain, was the inspiration behind Brain Resource Center. The senior
Shiroko says he began the school initially as a project to teach Brain bakery skills. The family later expanded
Brain's training and brought in other young people with similar physical conditions.

    D. Joseph's son gave Joseph the inspiration to found Brian Resource Centre

At first sight, you would think the collection of hundreds of colored shards (碎片) could be a work of
abstract art. But the objects are the contents of the stomach of a sea turtle that lost its battle with plastic
    pollution.
Environmentalists examined the stomach of the turtle found off the coast of Argentina. What they found
is the symptom of the increasing threat to sea turtles from a human addiction to plastic.
Sea turtles often mistake plastic items for jellyfish or other food. Ingesting (摄取) ocean pollution can
cause a digestive blockage and internal cuts. The result can be dangerous, followed by death.
Humans produce 260 million tons of plastic a year. When those products are pulled into the sea's currents,
the plastics are just broken into smaller pieces which are consumed by marine life at the bottom of the food
chain. An examination of a green turtle found off Florida discovered that, over the course of a month, the
animal's faeces (粪便) had contained 74 foreign objects, including "four types of balloons, different types of
hard plastic, a piece of carpet-like material and two 2-4 mm tar balls."
"The oceans have become on giant refuse bin for all manner of plastics. All sea turtle species may be
seriously harmed," according to the biologists Colette Wabnitz, from the University of British Columbia."The
symptom of this growing crisis can be seen inside and on sea turtles as well as their oceanic and terrestrial
habitats. It is urgently necessary to directly confront the source of plastic pollution, redesign packaging and
rethink the very idea of 'throwaway culture'."
Almost all marine species, from plankton to whales, have ingested plastic. But, even in small quantities,
plastic can kill sea turtles, the biologists said.
Fifty out of 92 turtles found dead, stranded on the shorelines of Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil, had
ingested a"considerable amount of man-made debris".
    1. What's the passage mainly about?
    A. How to prevent the sea turtle from plastic.
    B. Why plastic is dangerous to the sea turtle.
    C. Sea turtles suffering from plastic pollution.
    D. Protecting the sea turtle from being polluted.
    2. The author mentions the "throwaway culture" probably in a(n) ______ tone.
    A. praising
    B. positive
    C. comedic
    D. ironic
    3. The underlined word in the last paragraph probably means _____.
    A. a kind of food
    B. a kind of fish
    C. pieces of rubbish
    D. pieces of cloth
    4. The paragraph following the last one will probably talk about ______.
    A. the way the biologists examined the sea turtle
    B. some tips on how to make sea turtles avoid plastic
    C. how to prevent plastic pollution
    D. the reason why we should protect the sea turtle

1   The only way that they can preserve their history is to recount it as sagas-  2   These legends are useful
because they can tell us something about migrations of people who lived long ago, but none could write down
what they did. Anthropologists(人类学家) wondered where the remote ancestors of the Polynesian peoples
now living in the Pacific Islands came from.    3
But the first people who were like ourselves lived so long ago that even their sagas, if they had any, are

5   Stone does not decay, and so the tools of long ago have remained when even the bones of the men who
