Culture shock has many stages. Each stage can appear only at certain times. Culture begins with the " honeymoon". This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. This honeymoon stage can last for quite a long time. Afterwards, the second stage presents itself. A person may encounter some difficult times in daily life. This period of culture adjustment (调整) can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival rejecting the new culture. This"rejection stage" can be quite dangerous because the visitor may develop unhealthy habits, such as smoking, drinking too much. The third stage is characterized by gaining some understanding of the new culture. A new feeling of pleasure and sense of humor may be experienced. And you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor! This is called the"adjustment stage". The fourth stage can be called" at ease at last". Now you feel quite comfortable in your new environment. You can deal with most problems. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. If you meet someone from your country who has just arrived, you can be the expert on life in the new culture and help them to deal with their culture shock. The fifth stage is the stage that is called the"re-entry shock." This occurs when a return to the country of origin is made. One may find that things are no longer the same. For example, some of the newly learned customs are not in use in the old culture. |
1. What could be the best title of the passage? |
A. How to Fight Cultural Shock |
2. In which stage may people miss their friends and relatives and feel homesick most? |
A. The "honeymoon stage" B. The "rejection stage" C. The "adjustment stage" D. The "re-entry shock" |
3. Why do people experience the "re-entry shock"? |
A. The place is not the same as before B. The old customs have changes over the years C. They are not used to the local customs. D. They are no longer what they used to be. |

For more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets. Most of these searches have been done over the radio. The hope is that someone in outer space may be trying to get in touch with us. Scientists also have sent radio and television messages on spaceships traveling through space, on the chance that someone may be receptive to such messages. Scientists are using powerful radio telescopes to listen to signals from about 1, 000 stars, all within 100 light years of earth. In addition, they will scan the entire sky to "listen" for radio messages from more distant stars. Using a computer, they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at one time. Scientists are looking for any signal that stands out from the background noise. Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy (银河星系), scientists find that 5% are like our sun. Perhaps half of them have a planet like earth. Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution (进化) of life. Based on the inhabitable (that can be lived in) planets in our galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life. However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent life exists on other planets. Some believe that twenty years of searching without any intelligible messages shows that no one is out there. They say that the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely. Other scientists believe that our search hasn't been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent life exists in our galaxy. Although our sun family is only about five billion years old, our galaxy is about 20 billion years old. In that time, some scientists think it is likely that civilization much more advanced than ours have developed. Perhaps these civilizations send us no signals; perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us. If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep looking. |
1. According to the passage, how many planets in our galaxy might be inhabitable? |
A. 5 billion. B. 10 billion. C. 15 billion. D. 200 billion |
2. The first paragraph in this passage is mainly about _______. |
A. how scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets B. why scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets C. where scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets D. when scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets |
3. The underlined word "monitor" in the passage means" _______". |
A. find B. follow C. check D. form |
4. Which of these statements is True based on the information in the passage? |
A. The earth is one of the oldest planets in our galaxy. B. Most scientists believe that there is intelligent life on other planets. C. Scientists don't believe that there might be life on other planets. D. Scientists are trying different ways to find signs of life on other planets. |

Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they're always coming in for criticism. Their critics (批评家)seem to hate them because they have so much money to throw around. Why don't they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, it's the consumer who pays. The poor old consumer! He'd have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn't create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods is largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement. Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a dull wall or a newspaper full of the incidents and disasters. We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmers is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price! Another thing we mustn't forget is the "small ads." What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the "hatch, match and dispatch" column (栏目) but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or "agony" column. No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It's the best advertisement for advertising there is! |
1. What is the main idea of this passage? |
A. Advertisements steal money from our pockets B. The critics get the wrong idea of advertisements. C. Advertisers perform a useful service to communities. D. Advertisements are everywhere. |
2. What is the attitude of the author toward advertisements? |
A. He appreciates the role of advertisements. B. He doubts the effect of advertisements. C. He believes what is said in advertisements. D. He complains too many advertisements in daily life. |
3. Which of the following is Not True? |
A. The personal or "agony" column makes us know more about human nature. B. The only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. C. A newspaper will cost us more if there is no advertisement on it. D. Advertisement makes our life colorful. |
3. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? |

Millionaire at 14 Farrah Gray, a self-made millionaire by age 14, recognizes there's more to richness than money alone. Not too many people become entrepreneurs, published authors, producers and philanthropists in their lifetime. But don't tell that to Farrah Gray. Gray's rise in the business world is an unlikely story. Growing up poor on Chicago's Southside, Gray said he used to dream he would one day look from his office onto the streets of Manhattan. He dreamed of giving speeches that would inspire millions and making enough money to ensure that his mother didn't have to work two jobs. It didn't take Gray very long to _______. At age 14, Gray became a self-made millionaire when his company, Farr-Out Foods, which specialized in food targeted at young people, gained more than $1.5 million in sales. Shortly after, Gray sold his company for more than $1 million, but has continued working to inspire others with his success. Gray's entrepreneurial spirit was developed at a young age. He started his first business at age 6, selling homemade lotion door to door. Gray said he experienced a thrill from selling something he helped create and was instantly hooked. "Ideas are the most precious thing that can come to you. Every big idea starts out small," he said. Since age 12, Gray has toured the United States sharing his experiences with audiences. Gray tells audiences that it is important to"believe in yourself when no one else will." He has always made a great effort to inspire others to follow in his footsteps of success. His philosophy is "success is a process that must be taken step by step." He details these steps in his bestselling book, Reallionaire, which has made its way onto www.Amazon.com's bestseller list. An important staple of Gray's career has been his emphasis on philanthropy. His basic belief is, "The more you have, the more you should give." |
