I made a pledge (誓言) to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would
try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.
The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical (圣经
的) passage about husbands being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, "Love is an act of will.
A person can choose to love." To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks
    that would change.
And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, "That new yellow sweater looks
    great on you."
"Oh, Tom, you noticed," she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled.
After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse,
but then I thought, "Evelyn's been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me."
We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum
though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that's how the whole vacation passed. I made a new pledge
to keep on remembering to choose love.
There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.
"What's the matter?" I asked her.
"Tom," she said in a voice filled with distress (悲痛), "do you know something I don't?"
         "What do you mean?"
"Well…that checkup (体检) I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me?
Tom, you've been so good to me…am I dying?"
It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing.
"No, honey," I said, wrapping her in my arms. "You're not dying; I'm just starting to live."
    1. From the story we may infer that Tom drove to the beach cottage __________.
    A. with his family
    B. with Evelyn
    C. alone
    D. with his children
    2. During the two weeks on the beach, Tom showed more love to his wife because __________.
    A. she looked lovely in her new clothes
    B. he had made a lot of money in his Wall Street firm
    C. he was determined to be a good husband
    D. she was seriously ill
    3. The author says, "There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment." What was the one thing
        that went wrong?
    A. He praised her sweater, which puzzled her.
    B. She insisted on visiting a museum, which he hated.
    C. He knew something about her illness but didn't tell her.
    D. He was so good to her that she thought she must be dying.
    4. By saying "I'm just starting to live," Tom means that _____.
    A. he is just beginning to understand the real meaning of life
    B. he is just beginning to enjoy life as a loving husband
    C. he lived an unhappy life before and is now starting to change
    D. he is beginning to feel regret for what he did to his wife before

There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington, D.C. has
the National Gallery of Art (美术馆); Paris has the Luvre; London, the British Museum. Florida International
University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for
its drawings and paintings. FIU has opened what it says is the first computer art museum in the United States.
You don't have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone. You can
call the telephone number of a university computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored
in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically by artists on their own computers. In only a
few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings.
Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he starts the museum because computer
artists had no place to show their works.
A computer artist can only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs, to others
to see on their computers. He can also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures on paper, the
computer artist needs an expensive laser printer.
Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr Shostak said the FIU museum will make
computer art more fun for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists enjoy their work
much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge
    audience for the electronic museum.
    1. The main purpose of this text is to give information about _____.
    A. museums throughout the world
    B. an electronic art museum in Miami, U.S.A.
    C. art exhibitions in Florida International University
    D. latest development of computer art
    2. To see the art in FIU museum, you need _____.
    A. floppy discs
    B. a computer and a printer
    C. pictures and drawings on paper
    D. a computer connected to the museum by telephone line
    3. The museum was started when _____.
    A. Robert Shostak wanted to do something for computer scientists
    B. Robert Shostak wanted to help computer artists
    C. art students needed a place to show their works
    D. computer scientists wanted to do something about art
    4. The words "an audience"in the last paragraph refer to _____.
    A. art students
    B. computer owners
    C. exhibits in the museum
    D. those who will enjoy art

LOS ANGELES-The advice offered from any other 82-year-olds might have made young people yawn and
    roll their eyes.
But when former South African President Nelson Mandela advised two dozen Los Angeles to take education seriously, his audience was listening.
The famed old man said to the young people that if they expected to improve the lives of others in the future, they must work at improving their own lives now."Education is one of the most important weapons you have," Mandela advised,"it will place you in a far better position to serve yourself and your community."

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally
viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a product that can easily be identified and measured.
The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language-all
these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast (对照), the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a
journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but the
attitudes, feelings people have, and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected
difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world,
new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown,
and to accept the possibility that they may "fail" at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being
is necessary for our ability to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, we tend to take more
chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we're shy and indecisive? Then our sense
of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt change or that we're not
smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and
grow. If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our
    own making.
    1. A person is generally believed to achieve personal growth when_____ .
    A. he has given up his smoking habit
    B. he has made great efforts in his work
    C. he is interested in making anything new
    D. he has tried to determine where he is on his journey
    2. Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing?
    A. Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges.
    B. Jane won the first prize in the speech competition.
    C. Jerry picked up French during his stay in Paris.
    D. Father's salary rose from 5, 000 to 7,000.
    2. In the author's eye, one who views personal growth as a process would ______.
    A. succeed in climbing up the social ladder
    B. judge his ability to grow from his own achievements
    C. face difficulties and take up challenges
    D. aim high and reach his goal each time
3.When the author says "a new way of being" (para.3), he is referring to _____.
    A. a new approach to experiencing the world
    B. a new way of taking risks
    C. a new method of finding ourselves
    D. a new system of adapting to change
    4. For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following except ____.
    A. being curious about more changes
    B. being quick in self-adaptation
    C. having an open mind to new experiences
    D. staying away from failures and challenges
