It was just getting dark. There was a touch of fog and I was on a lonely stretch of road. 1 I was going along cheerfully, thinking about the dinner I would eat when I got to Salisbury. I was going along 2 at about thirty-five miles an hour when suddenly I heard a scream, a 3 scream- " Help!" I looked round, but the only 4 of life was a large, black, rather suspicious-looking (可疑的) car just 5 a bend in the road about a hundred yards away. That was where the cry had come from. I 6 speed and went after it. I think the driver saw what I was doing, for he did the same and began to draw 7 me. As I drew near, the girl's voice came again, a lovely voice but trembling with 8 . "Let me go, you coward; you're hurting me. Oh! Oh!" I felt my 9 boil. The fog was coming down 10 now, and the countryside was lonelier. I had no 11 that the murderous guy in the car noticed this. Again came a cry. "Drop that knife, you fool. Oh!" Then a cry and a groan (呻吟). If I was to save her, it was now or 12 . Perhaps even now I was too late. But if I couldn't save the girl, I would at least try to bring the murderer to 13 . The car was only a couple of yards away now. I drove the bike right across its 14 , and its brakes (煞车) screamed as the driver tried to pull it over and 15 into the ditch (沟) at the side of the road. The door of the car was pushed open angrily and a dark, evil-looking fellow stepped out. "You fool!" he shouted as he came towards me with his fist raised to hit me. But I was 16 than he. I put all I could into 17 that would have knocked out Joe Louis. It 18 him right on the point of the chin; his 19 slowly bent under him, and he dropped to the ground without a sound. I rushed to the car, 20 open the door and looked inside. There was no girl there. Suddenly from the back of the car came a voice. "You have been listening to a radio play, Murder in Hollywood, with Mae Garbo and Clark Taylor. The news will follow immediately." | ||||

You Mi, a lovely and confident 17-year-old student, is the first Chinese high school student to appear on the cover of the popular young adults' fashion magazine Seventeen. "You is IN," said Wang Lihua, Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen. "She is active and mature (成熟的) because of her knowledge on everything from academic studies, to books on art, to movies. We found she's the very style we're looking for to represent young people's attitudes." You also impressed Wang with her fluent English when they first met last year. As the hostess of an English broadcasting programme at the High School Affiliated to Renmin University, You is always praised for speaking English almost like a native speaker. "I've built up my English by watching thousands of English DVDs since I was 10," she explained. But for You, watching isn't enough. Last year, while in Senior 1, she met a talented boy who showed self- made DV movies at the English Corner in her school. "I thought it was so cool and I knew that I should start making my own films," she said. So she wrote a campus (校园) story, persuaded schoolmates to star in it and then began shooting a 30-minute DV movie, all in English. "I played one of the leading roles, actually I was everything in my film. I worked on it every single day during the SARS holidays," she recalled. The movie finally became a big hit on campus, earning You a strong reputation (名气) as a DV movie director. But this is not the only field she wants to master. Despite being a science student, You likes art, literature and fashion design very much. "There are people who can be artists, there are people who edit books, and there are people who become film producers. But I just hope to mix all the things up!" she said. "There is an old saying I believe: Chance favours only the prepared mind." |

London, Reuters-What could annoy teenagers enough to make them stop hanging out with friends and go home? No, it's not a visit from their mothers, and not a threat to take away their cellphones or pocket money. It's high-frequency noise. The UK police recently agreed to use a device (装置) called the Sonic Teenager Deterrent. It sends out a sound that makes teenagers become so impatient and angry that they have to cover their ears tightly and walk away. The sound is at extreme high-pitch that can be heard by those under 20. The body's natural ability to detect some wave bands (波段) decreases almost entirely after 20, so few adults can hear the sounds. The black-box device, nicknamed the Mosquito because of its sound, can be fixed to the outside walls of shops, offices and homes. It sounds to youngsters like a crazy insect or a badly played violin. But it causes no physical damage. A number of police forces and councils have given permission to use the system and want to install it at trouble spots. Staffordshire Police Inspector Amanda Davies, who has given the device to shopkeepers in the Moorlands area, said," It is controlled by the shopkeepers--if they can see through their window that there is a problem, they turn the device on for a while until the group has run away." |
1. The device can be used to _______. |
A. threaten teenagers in public B. drive away trouble-makers under 20 C. help mothers control their teenage children D. help the police control shopkeepers |

A. to advertise a new hi-tech device B. to tell the reader a piece of news C. to sell the device to shopkeepers D. to inform the public as the spokesman of the police |
4. Who will welcome the device most? |
A. Shopkeepers. B. The police. C. Young people. D. The producer. |

Less TV Reduce Kids Weight PALO AITO, California-" Switching off the television may help prevent children from getting fatter-even if they do not change their diet or increase the amount they exercise," US researchers said last week. A study of 192 third and fourth grades, generally aged eight and nine, found that children who cut the number of hours spent watching television gained nearly two pounds (0.91 kg ) less over a one-year period than those who did not change their television diet. "The findings are important because they show that weight loss can only be the result of a reduction in television viewing and not any other activity," said Thomas Robinson, a pediatrician (儿科专家) at Stanford University. " American children spend an average of more than four hours per day watching television and videos or playing games, and rates of childhood being very fat have doubt over the past 20 years," Robinson said. In the study, presented this week to the Pediatric Academic Societies' annual meeting in San Francisco, the researchers persuaded about 100 of the students to reduce their television viewing by one-quarter to one-third. Children watching fewer hours of television showed a significantly smaller increase in waist size and had less body fat than other students who continue their normal television viewing, even though neither group ate a special diet nor took part in any extra exercise. "One explanation for the weight loss could be the children unstuck to the television may simply have been moving around and burning off calories," Robinson said. "Another reason might be due to eating fewer meals in front of the television. Some studies have suggested that eating in front of the TV encourages people to eat more," Robinson added. |
