Chinese Valentine's Day (情人节) is on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar (阴历). It is a traditional festival for Chinese people. It comes from a romantic ancient Chinese story. Niu Lang and Zhi Nv, two lovers who got separated by the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens, can only meet that night. Thanks to this touching story, Chinese people regard the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar as Chinese Valentine's Day. In China people also call it "Qixi". Meanwhile, February 14 of the solar calendar is European Valentine's Day. It is related to a moving story too. The story goes that, there was a cruel king in ancient Rome whose name was Claudius. He forbade the youth to get married during the wars, which made the lovers angry. There was a monk (修道士) named Valentine who was very angry at the rule and the king. One day a couple of lovers came to his temple to ask for help to get married. Valentine helped them. Later, many couples got married with Valentine's help. But Claudius knew it soon. He put Valentine to death cruelly. And that day was February 14, the year of 270. Compared with European Valentine's Day, Qixi is less popular in China though it is a traditional Chinese festival. There may be many reasons. First of all, the lunar calendar is not easy to remember for most of the young people who are used to the solar calendar. Secondly, to many businessmen, European Valentine's Day is not only a festival for lovers but also a good chance to make money. Most of the flower shops can sell their flowers at a good price on European Valentine's Day while the business drops in Qixi, because on European Valentine's Day lovers know more about how to enjoy it. They exchange cards, flowers and go out to date. But most of them don't know the culture of Chinese Valentine's Day or how to celebrate it. |

A lot of us lose life's tough battles by starting a frontal attack-when a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum (最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for Sam's being late-serious illness at home-he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn't work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech. Yes, the boss was. Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room; everyone was hard at work. Sam's supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand. "How do you do!" he said. "I'm Sam Maynard. I'm applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?" The room exploded in laughter. The supervisor clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam Maynard had saved his job-with the only tool that could win, a laugh. Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying "no", criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it's the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum. |
1. Why was Sam late for his job? |
A. Because he was ill. B. Because he was caught in a traffic jam. C. He was busy applying for a new job. D. Because he got up late. |
2. The phrase "clamped off" in Paragraph 3 means ____. |
A. burst into B. tried to set up C. tried to hold back D. gave out |
3. Which of the following statements can we infer from the passage? |
A. Sam was supposed to come to his office at 8:30. B. It wasn't the first time that Sam came late for his work. C. Humor is the most effective way of solving problems. D. All people lose life's battles for they are lacking in a sense of humor. |

"Mister D'Arcy is not a policeman. He is, however, very wise. He knew the police would search his apartment. He also knew how police think. So, he did not hide the letter where he knew they would look for it. "Do you remember how Germont laughed when I said the mystery was difficult for him to solve because it was so simple?" Dupin filled his pipe with tobacco and lit it."Well, the more I thought about it, the more I realized the police could not find the letter because D'Arcy had not hidden it at all. "So I went to visit D'Arcy in his apartment. I took a pair of dark green eyeglasses with me. I explained to him that I was having trouble with my eyes and needed to wear the dark glasses at all times. He believed me. The glasses permitted me to look around the apartment while I seemed only to be talking to him. "I paid special attention to a large desk where there were a lot of papers and books. However, I saw nothing suspicious there. After a few minutes, however, I noticed a small shelf over the fireplace. A few postcards and a letter were lying on the shelf. The letter looked very old and dirty. "As soon as I saw this letter, I decided it must be the one I was looking for. It must be, even though it was completely different from the one Germont had described. "This letter had a large green stamp on it. The address was written in small letters in blue ink. I memorized every detail of the letter while I talked to D'Arcy. Then when he was not looking, I dropped one of my gloves on the floor under my chair. "The next morning, I stopped at his apartment to look for my glove. While we were talking, we heard people shouting in the street. D'Arcy went to the window and looked out. Quickly, I stepped to the shelf and put the letter in my pocket. Then I replaced it with a letter that looked exactly like it, which I had made it the night before. "The trouble in the street was caused by a man who had almost been run over by a horse and carriage. He was not hurt. And soon the crowd of people went away. When it was over, D'Arcy came away from the window. I said goodbye and left. "The man who almost had an accident was one of my servants(雇员). I had paid him to create the incident." Dupin stopped talking to light his pipe. I did not understand."But, Dupin," I said,"why did you go to the trouble of replacing the letter? Why not just take it and leave?" Dupin smiled."D'Arcy is a dangerous man," he said."And he has many loyal servants. If I had taken the letter, I might never have left his apartment alive." |
1. What is Dupin probably? |
A. An actor. B. A professor. C. An official. D. A detective. |
2. Which of he following about Dupin's dropping one of his gloves is NOT true? |
A. He dropped it intentionally. B. He dropped it carelessly. C. He dropped it in order to drop in on D'Arcy again. D. He dropped it to make an excuse. |
3. According to the text, we can infer _______. |
A. the letter Dupin took away was exactly the one he wanted. B. the incident in the street was directed by Dupin. C. Mr. D'Arcy and Dupin were good friends. D. Dupin should have taken the letter away directly. |
4. Which would be the best title for the text? |
A. The stolen letter B. An unexpected accident C. A dangerous man D. The frightening apartment |

People today are becoming increasingly aware that a proper diet is the foundation of good health. If we don't have a regular diet of proper food, we don't have the fuel to perform at our best. However, some people think not eating breakfast doesn't matter a lot, though eating it is important. Get the truth behind this common wrong idea and other meal frequency and timing meals. Change Text Size Bookmark Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon TwitThis javascript:void (0); Will eating breakfast every day help me lose weight? Yes, eating the morning meal can actually help you lose pounds. People who have breakfast are less likely to eat diet-busting (破坏的) junk food and are more likely to exercise later in the day, as studies show. People who skip breakfast, on the other hand, usually make up the calories before day's end. Researchers found that 78 percent of the men and women included in the National Weight Control Registry - who have maintained an average weight loss of 66 pounds for more than 5 years - eat breakfast every day. Is"grazing" really healthier than eating three square meals a day? No. Eating many small meals throughout the day is probably not better for you than three main meals, the traditional amounts of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The idea that "grazing" is healthier comes from a few old studies showing that eating frequent meals throughout the day may burn more fat and lower insulin (胰岛素)levels. But later studies have found no benefit to grazing. It's not healthier than eating three squares, according to the American Dietetic Association. I've always eaten most of my calories at dinner. If I'm healthy, is there any reason for us not to keep doing this? Hard to say. Instinctively, it sounds like a bad idea. Yet"one-mealers" tend to eat less food totally, scientists say, so your dining habit may actually help you stay tidy and attractive. On the other hand, one small, brief study by USDA scientists found that eating just one daily meal may cause small increases in blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol (胆固醇). If your annual blood tests show a rise in any key risk factors for heart disease or diabetes, it is high time for you to reconsider your meal strategy. Will bedtime snacks make you fat? No. But that's not permission for you to eat cookies before going to bed every night. Consuming more calories than you burn through physical activity produces big loose stomachs and weak legs no matter what time you overeat. A habit of snacking in front of the television every evening will lead to weight gain, but no more so than having a six-egg pancake for breakfast or conquering a bag of beans with sweet food at your desk every afternoon. The final word Eat fewer calories than you need in a day and you will lose weight. Eat breakfast because it will help you control calories better, not because it's a magic meal. Eat the number of meals that keeps you satisfied and energized. No one plan is best for everyone |
