Not long before, my daughter's shoes were scratched (划破) with a knife. She burst into tears. I took
    them to the shoemaker's.
The young apprentice(学徒) glanced at the   1   and said, "Nothing I can do except   2   the upper."
His master looked at them and said, "If you   3   me, I will add more scratches on both the shoes."

He explained,"As if the opening were made   5   for a special style."
I didn't fully understand him,   6   I decided to leave the shoes.
Two days later I dropped by from work to   7   the shoes. I found more scratches on each shoe; all the
openings were patched (缝补)by soft red leather; the stitches (针脚) were twisted with the appearance
looking more  8   and interesting than ever. I couldn't help praising the master's   9   .
Another time, my sister's blouse was torn, leaving a large opening. My wife checked it  10  , and then said,
"Let me take it home and  11  it."
         Three days later, seeing it again, I was greatly   12   : all the torn parts took on a look of ice crystal (水晶);

"I was   14   by that shoemaker. Patches are supposed to be  15  , but a skillful craftsman (工匠) can make
it take on a kind of   16   ." replied my wife.
Her words inspired me more: perfection is impossible to achieve in  17   ; patches appear in the  18  of
injury, disability or disease. Since you can't change the existence of wound, you should not  19   people's
sympathy by disclosing the wound, which is meaningless. Just sew the   20   by patches and produce a most
beautiful flower on it, and that is the significance of life.

                                                                       Life in 2060
Let us suppose it is now about A.D. 2060. Let's imagine it is about fifty years from now. Of course, things have changed and life is very different.
Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it was
for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have
been built. The hotels are air-conditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on
the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment of
    young and old.
What are people eating now? People are still eating food. But many foods now come in pill form, and the
food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants.
Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago, most of
our planet's surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water and crops are no longer destroyed by
pests. The harvest is always good.
Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to
run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.
People are now largely vegetarians (素食者). You see, as the number of people increases, the number of
animals decreases. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in our bodies and in
our minds, and we know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to get rid of diseases. No
one has to be ill any more.
Such would be our life in 2060.

    A. there are fewer population
    B. there are more pests
    C. there is less water
    D. the crops are getting better
    4. Why are people largely vegetarians in 2060?
    A. Because they don't eat meat.
    B. Because doctors advise them not to eat meat.

Jeanne Calment, a French woman, became a record breaker on 17 October of 1995, when at the age of
120 years and 238 days, she became the longest-lived human being on record. A Japanese man died in 1986
at the age of 120 years and 237 days.
Jeanne Calment lives in a small old people's home in the south of France; her husband, her only child and
her grandson have all died. She is nearly blind and deaf and is always in a wheelchair, but her doctor describe
s her as being more like a 90-year-old in good health than someone of 120. She still has a lively sense of humor. When asked on her 120th birthday what she expected of the future, she replied: A very short one. She also
remarked that she thought the good Lord had forgotten all about her.
So what is the key to a long life? According to some doctors, diet, exercise and no smoking are the three
important factors. Jeanne Calment has followed two of the tips. She has always eaten a healthy diet, and she
used to do exercises every day until she broke her leg at the age of 115. However, until recently she drank two
glasses of strong red wine a day, and she does smoke(now only a little). Besides, Jeanne Calment might have
got very good genes (基因) from her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86.
A local lawyer bought her house when she was 80 under an agreement that he would pay her some money
every year until her death. It must have seemed a good move at the time, but so far the lawyer has paid her at
least three times the value of the house. Every year on her birthday Jeanne Calment sends him a card saying:
    Sorry, I'm still alive!
    1. How does Jeanne Calment feel about her old age?
    A. She is miserable and unhappy.
    B. She is cheerful and humorous.
    C. She would like to live much longer.
    D. She feels she is going to die very soon.
    2. Jeanne Calment owes her good health and long life to ______.
    A. smoking only a little every day
    B. her giving up smoking and drinking
    C. drinking two glasses of strong red wine every day
    D. the good genes from her parents, a healthy diet and some exercises
    3. Why does Jeanne Calment say"Sorry, I'm still alive" to the local lawyer every year on her birthday?
    A. Because she had an agreement at 80 with the lawyer which was to her advantage.
    B. Because she has asked the lawyer to pay her more rent than they first agreed.
    C. Because the lawyer has paid her much more money than the value of the house.
    D. Because the house she sold to the lawyer isn't worth the money he has already paid.

Today anyone will accept money in exchange for goods and services. People use money to buy food,
furniture, books, bicycles and hundreds of other things they need or want. When they work, they usually get
    paid in money.
Most of the money today is made of metal or paper. But people used to use all kinds of things as money.
One of the first kinds of money was shells.
Shells were not the only things used as money. In China, cloth and knives were used. In the Phillipine
Islands, rice was used as money for a long time. Elephant tusks, monkey tails and salt were used as money in
    parts of Africa.
The first metal coins were made in China. They were round and had a square hole in the centre. People
strung (串联) them together and carried them from place to place.
Different countries have used different metals and designs for their money. The first coins in England
were made of tin (锡). Sweden and Russia used copper (铜) to make their money. Later some countries began
to make coins of gold and silver.
But even gold and silver were inconvenient if you had to buy something expensive. Again the Chinese
thought of a way to improve money. They began to use paper money. The first paper money looked more like
note from one person to another than the paper money used today.
Money has had an interesting history from the days of shell money until today.

    A. was passed from west Asia to China
    B. looked like a note used today

Life may not always seem fair, but we can learn to deal with it and make new choices along the way.
I remember so clearly sitting next to my dad as we drove through the town. I was complaining about
something unfair that had happened to me. Dad looked directly at me and said,"No one ever said life was fair."
I was shocked at his answer. Later on as my marriage had problems even though I tried to save it. I could still
hear"It's not fair" in my hear
    t. Now as I raise two kids alone, try to create new relationships and build a
business, I am forced to face the inevitable (不可避免的) truth every day. Gradually I've found that I have
    accepted my dad's wisdom.
We all will face loss or unexpected changes. But unfairness should not be the only thing in our life. We
choose for ourselves what seems fair by comparing our lives with others', and this can lead us to feel that our
own lives are unfair. People need to ignore what others have and set their own plans. Certainly, there're so many unhappy events in the world and in our lives, and when we deal with them, we try to control as many things as we can. Then, the sense of" it's not fair" often comes when we can't control the things in our lives. So please
put your efforts into the process rather than the result. You should learn that life is unfair, but you can be fair
and learn how to enjoy life.
