Babies can learn new words if they are connected with objects that catch their attention, researchers at the
Infant Lab at Temple University in Philadelphia have found.
"They hear every word," said Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, professor of psychology at Temple University. "And they
are also paying attention to the things that are interesting to them."
Previous studies showed babies as young as 10 months old may understand about 10 words. But Infant Lab
researchers wanted to figure out how these infants actually learned words. So they tested more than 75 babies,
showing them a series of objects and attaching made-up names to them. They would ask the babies questions,
and then track their eyes to measure their responses.
So, could the babies remember the names? They found infants could match words with objects. But they
also discovered babies only associated the new words with the objects that caught their attention-interesting
objects. They did not associate words with the boring, dull objects.
For parents, the message in all this is that very young children are listening and learning language. And they
learn about the things that specifically interest them.
Twins Mark and Anita Farrell took part in the study when they were 10 months old, and their mother,
Penni Farrell, took home what she learned about baby behavior.
"I decided to go out and buy a couple of books that and more colorful images, words, things that would
    draw their attention," she said.
Researchers say parents should follow a baby' s lead.
Another lesson for parents, researchers say, is to talk with your children starting at a very young age, and
make sure that conversation is about something your child finds interesting.
    1. The purpose of this research is _____.
    A. to help parents teach their babies
    B. to figure out how parents teach their babies
    C. to find out how babies learn words
    D. to help babies learn words
    2. The research showed that _____.
    A. a ten-month-old baby can' t understand 10 words
    B. babies can' t remember interesting names
    C. babies can associate words with boring objects too
    D. babies can match the new words with interesting objects
    3. From the results of the research, parents can develop babies' talking ability by _____.
    A. talking with babies time and time again
    B. talking with babies as much as possible
    C. talking with babies about topics interesting them at a very young age
    D. talking to babies before they are born
    4. The best title of this passage probably is ______.
    A. Attractive Objects Help Babies Learn New Words
    B. How To Talk With Babies At Their Very Young Age
    C. The Importance of Teaching Babies to Learn New Words

Your voice is the only means of communicating over the telephone. Even so, watch your body language
and facial expressions-they affect the way you sound. If you are sleepy, for example, you often will sound
tired or breathless. To keep a healthy and bright tone (音调) in your voice, smile when talking on a phone.
Don't answer the phone in a rush. Take a deep breath, and then breathe out slowly as you pick up the
receiver. You will sound more relaxed. If you recognize the other person' s voice, use his/her name on your
greeting. Use it again during the conversation and when parting. When making a difficult call, work out exactly what you wish to say. Stand while making the call-it will help you sound more confident.
Get fairly quickly to the point-"The reason I' m calling is..."Try to drop the pitch (音高) of your voice at
the ends of sentences-it will help you be more sure about what you said.
If you know somebody wants to talk a lot, make it clear at the start of the call that you have only a little
time. There are several ways of making a call short:" It ' s been lovely talking to you, but I really must go
now." or" I know you are quite busy, so I better go now."If all fails, try," My other line is ringing. Or"I think
there' s someone at the door."
When leaving a message on someone s answering machine, speak clearly and slowly to allow the person to
take down any details as your message plays back. Many people feel uneasy with answering machines. Again,
form a picture of the other person in your mind, and you will sound more relaxed.
With the increasing use of tele-communication and mobile phones, it has become of great importance that
we pay special attention to HOW and WHAT we speak on the phones.
    1. In Paragraph 1, the author suggests paying attention to your  _____.
    A. voice
    B. body language
    C. tone
    D. health
    2. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. The phone.

Sales of laptop computers passed desktops (台式电脑) in the US for the first time ever this fall, according
    to market research firm IDC.
That' s bad news for backs, necks and shoulders.
"Laptops are basically not designed based on human bodies-unless you' re 2 feet tall," says physician
Norman J. Marcus, a muscle (肌肉 ) specialist in New York City.
When you work at a computer, the keyboard should be at elbow height, so your upper and lower arms
form an angle (角度) of 90 degrees or more. The monitor (显示器) should be at about eye level so you can
rest back in a chair with back support.
But most users simply set their laptops on a desk or table. The keyboard is too high, which makes your
arms reach up, your shoulders rise and your wrists (手腕) bend down. The monitor is too low, which pulls
your head and neck forward and down and this may hurt your back.
That' s OK if you use your laptop occasionally, for short periods. But if you use one for hours without
stopping-as do millions of college students, business travelers, video-gamers and growing numbers of office
workers-you' re setting yourself up for muscle problems that can make your entire upper body hurt.
Experts have warned about laptop problems for years-but without success. People continue to abandon
large and heavy desktops in favor of the smaller and lighter laptops. And WiFi (无线局域网 ) connections let
us use laptops anywhere-in bed, on the floor-and in all kinds of positions.
    1. What Norman J. Marcus says in Paragraph 3 means _____ .
    A. laptops are so badly designed
    B. muscle pains are mainly caused by laptops
    C. laptops are not suitable for people of usual height
    D. laptops cause a lot of diseases easily
    2. It can be known from the passage that ______.
    A. we had better not use laptops too frequently
    B. there are no suitable places for laptops
    C. we shall buy desktops instead of laptops
    D. desktops will face a hard future
    3. Which of the following statements can be learned from the passage?
    A. Using laptops doesn' t do harm to people' s health.
    B. People pay little attention to the risks of laptop use.
    C. Most people use laptops more often than desktops.
    D. Laptops bring people more disadvantages than advantages.
    4. The main purpose of the passage is to _____ .
    A. show that laptops are widely used in the US
    B. tell us people prefer laptops to desktops
    C. persuade people not to use laptops any more
    D. warn people of health problems caused by laptops

Born in London in 1815, Ada Lovelace was the daughter of Annabella Millbanke and the British poet Lord
Byron. Her parents separated just a month after she was born. Less than a year later, Lord Byron went abroad
and never returned ( he died in Greece in 1824). Ada never knew her father and was raised by her mother. Her mother had mathematical training and insisted that Ada, who was educated privately, study mathematics too.
Ada did well not only in mathematics and science, but also in music and PE.
In 1833, Ada met Charles Babbage, a famous English mathematician. He was known as the inventor of a
calculating machine called the Difference Engine. They became good friends and began to write to each other
on the topics of mathematics, logic, and many other subjects.
Babbage had made plans in 1834 for a new kind of calculating machine ( although the Difference Engine
was not finished),an Analytical Engine. Few people in England would support him with his first machine
unfinished. But he found support for his new calculating machine abroad. In 1842, an Italian mathematician,
Louis Menabrea, published a paper in French on the subject of the Analytical Engine. Babbage asked Ada to
    translate the paper.
When she showed Babbage her translation he suggested that she add her own notes, which turned out to be
three times as long as Menabrea' s. The notes are the source of her enduring fame (不朽的声誉 ). In her notes, Ada predicted (预言 )that such a machine might be used to write music, to draw pictures, and would be used
for both practical and scientific use. She was correct.
After she wrote the description of Babbage' s Analytical Engine, her life was plagued (折磨) with illnesses.
In 1852, she died of cancer and was buried beside her father at Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire, England.
In 1980, 165 years after Ada' s birth, the US Defense Department announced a powerful new computer
language. They named it Ada in honor of Ada Lovelace' s important role in the history of computing.
    1. It seemed that Ada' s mother _____.

    B. no one thought the machine would be useful
    C. he had moved to Italy and settled there
    D. most of his inventions proved useless
    3. Menabrea' s paper on Babbage' s Analytical Engine was written in _____.
    A. English
    B. Italian
    C. German
    D. French
    4. What do we learn about Ada from the passage?
    A. She was remembered as a great translator.
    B. Her predictions have come true.
    C. Her notes were written in computer language.
    D. She led a long and fruitful life.
