Joan worked in a hospital as a nurse. One evening there was a big dance at the hospital. Most of the
doctors and nurses would be there, but of course somebody had to be left to look after the sick children,
and Joan was not of the lucky ones. She liked dancing very much, so when she had to start work that
evening while her friends were getting ready to go to the dance, she felt very sorry for herself.
She went to each sick child one after another and said good-night, until she came to one little boy, Dick.
He was eleven years old, but he was already able to talk like an adult. Poor Dick had a very serious illness,
and now he was hardly able to move any part of his body except his hands. Joan knew he would never get
any better, but he was always happy and always thinking about other people instead of himself.
Dick knew that Joan loved dancing. So when she came to say good-night to him, he greeted her with
the words,"I'm very sorry that you have to miss the dance because of us. But we are going to have a party
for you. If you look in my drawer, you find a piece of cake. I saved it from my dinner today, so it is quite
fresh. And there is also a dollar there. You can buy something to drink with that. And I'll get up and dance
with you myself if I was able to," he added.

Laughter is good for your health. When you laugh, several changes happen to your body. Your heart
beats more slowly, your blood pressure goes down. You breathe more deeply, and so more oxygen (氧气) is
carried round your body. Chemical changes happen too. Happy-feeling chemicals go to your head and make
you feel that all is well in the world. The next time you laugh, notice that you are feeling relaxed afterwards.
Doctors have studied the results of laughing with very sick patients. First, if a patient has a lot of pain, it
is a good idea to watch funny films. One person with cancer described his stay in hospital."After I laughed
hard for ten minutes, the pain would go and I would have about two hours of pain-free sleep." Laughing can
help you get better, especially if you have a very bad illness. Again, chemical changes happen in the body.
As a result the body fights the disease and may help the patient get better.
But laughing is good for healthy people, too. Laughing helps people relax. If there is a problem and you
are able to laugh about it, you may feel more relaxed.
In Bombay in India there are 48" laughing clubs". People meet and laugh together! They may laugh
quietly or silently. When they laugh very strongly, this exercises the whole body. This is part of the Indian
study of human health. So, next time, explain to your friends why you are laughing. "It's keeping me healthy.
Laughing is the best medicine, and they are no side-effects."
