When you want to go shopping, decide how much money you can spend for new clothes. Think about
the kind of clothes you really need. Then look for those clothes on sale (出售).
There are labels (标签) inside all new clothes. The labels tell you how to take care of your clothes. The
label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash by washing in
cold water. The label on a coat may say "dry clean only". Washing may ruin (损坏) this coat. If you do as
the directions on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best. Many clothes today must be dry-
cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. When buying new clothes, check to see if they will need to be dry-cleaned.
You will save money if you buy clothes that can be washed.

The idea of daylight saving time started with an American named Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). He
explained how a lot of the money spent on candles used for light (this was before electricity) could be saved
if everyone woke up earlier and went to bed earlier.
Even though Franklin's idea had a clear meaning, most people didn't want to get up earlier than they had
    to. Who would?
It was not until 1907 that an Englishman named William Willet came up with a way to "make" the sun set
later. His idea was to turn clocks forward by 20 minutes on each of the four Sundays in April, for a total of
    80 minutes.
William's idea was laughed at, at first. But when World War I started in 1914. Many countries decided they
had to save energy for the war.
Daylight saving time has other uses. The more time you spend outside playing, the less time you are spending
in front of the computer or the TV. These things also use energy.
Also, daylight saving time sometimes causes problems. For example, China used it in 1986-but stopped it in
1991. That was because me temperatures are quite different from North to South and time from East to West.
If the people from northwest part of China use daylight saving time. sometimes they have to get up to work
when it is not very bright outside. That will cause some trouble for them.
Still, most parts of the world do have daylight saving time, and most people look forward to the extra hour
    of evening light.
    1. Why did Franklin give the idea of daylight saving time?
    A. To save the money.
    B. To save time.
    C. To wake up earlier.
    D. To go to bed earlier.
    2. In what year was the idea of daylight saving time put in use?
    A. In 1907.
    B. In 1914.
    C. In 1986.
    D. In 1991.
    3. If it is 6:00 now, which is Willet's idea time?
    A. 5:40.
    B. 6:20.
    C. 6:40.
    D. 7:20.
    4. Why is daylight saving time not used in China now? Because _____.
    A. people wouldn't like to get up earlier
    B. the temperatures are quite different
    C. the country is large
    D. the time is quite different

Switzerland (瑞士) is famous for its watches. However, this country didn't invent the watch. It was the

The blacksmith's assistant wanted to try to repair, so the traveler handed him the clock. The assistant was
a very clever man, so it was easy for him to repair it. He even remembered how it was made. As soon as the
traveler had gone on his way, he made a watch of exactly the same type (样式).

Which of your hands do you use most? Very few of us use both of our hands well. Most of us are right-
handed. Only about five people out of a hundred are left-handed. New-born babies can take things with either

watch the monkeys carefully. You'll see that some of them will swing (摆动)from their right hands and others
will use their left hands. But most human beings (人类) use their right hands better and this makes life difficult
for the left-handed ones. We live in a right-handed world.

A new study finds people in big cities walking faster than before. Is the pace (节奏) of life in our cities
increasing? Yes, according to a recent study. Last year researchers visited 32 cities and measured how fast
people walked. They timed adults to see how long it took them to walk 18 meters along the sidewalk.
Researchers found that walking speed today is about 10 percent faster than ten years ago. They also
learned that some of the biggest changes took place in Asian cities like Singapore and Guanzhou. The two
cities had the largest increase in walking speed. Nowadays, over half of people in the world live in cities.
Certainly the world's pace of life is becoming faster and cities are becoming more crowded.
