Some people believe that international sports create goodwill between the nations and that if countries play
games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: those international contests
encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both
arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourages
international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the Games
were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests.
One country received its second-place medal with visible indignation after the hockey final. There had been
noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were convinced
that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents' victory was unfair. Their
manager was in a rage when he said:"This wasn't hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are
finished." The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension of the team
    for at least three years.
The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable
end to their contest. The game had ended in disturbance. It was thought at first that the United States had won,
by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw
the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time
the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury debated the matter for four and a half hours
before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.
Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the
game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much
to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive
    patriotism (爱国主义).
    1. According to the author, the recent Olympic Games have ______.

    [     ]

    A. created goodwill between nations
    B. bred only false national pride
    C. barely showed any international friendship
    D. led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred
    2. What would the manager mean by saying, "...Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished"?
    A. His team would no longer take part in international games.
    B. Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decisions.
    C. There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.
    D. The Federation should be dissolved.
    3. The basketball example implied that ______.
    A. too much patriotism was displayed in the incident
    B. the announcement to prolong the match was wrong
    C. the appeal jury was too hesitant in making the decision
    D. the American team was right in rejecting the silver medals
    4. The author gives the two examples in Paragraph 2 and 3 to show _____.
    A. how false national pride led to undesirable incidents in international games
    B. that spokesmen have been more obedient than they used to be
    C. that competitiveness in the games discourages international friendship
    D. that unfair decisions are common in Olympic Games
    5. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
    A. The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.
    B. Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games.
    C. Sports should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.
    D. International contests are liable for misunderstanding between nations.

You're in a bit of a dilemma standing in front of the produce section of your local supermarket. In one
hand, you're holding a conventionally grown Granny Smith apple. In your other hand, you have one that's
been organically grown. Both apples are firm, shiny and green. Both provide vitamins and fiber, and both
are free of fat, sodium and cholesterol.
The conventionally grown apple costs less and is a proven family favorite. But the organic apple has a
label that says "USDA Organic". Does that mean it's better? Safer? More nutritious? Several differences
between organic and non-organic foods exist. Become a better informed consumer for your next trip to the
    supermarket.
The word "organic" refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits,
vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and
water conservation and reduce pollution. Farmers who grow organic produce and meat don't use conventional
methods to fertilize, control weeds or prevent livestock disease.
Here are other differences between conventional farming and organic farming:
    Conventional farmers Organic farmers
Apply chemical fertilizers to promote plant
    growth.
Apply natural fertilizers to feed soil and
    plants.
Apply insecticides to reduce pests and disease. Use beneficial insects and birds to reduce pests and
    disease.
    Give animals antibiotics (抗生素), growth
    hormones
(激素) and medications to prevent disease
    and promote growth, housing.
Give animals organic food and allow them
access to the outdoors. Use preventive
    measures-such as a
balanced diet and clean housing-to help
    minimize disease.
         * Organic or not? Check the label.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that requires
all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown,
handled and processed. Any farmer or food manufacturer who labels and sells a product as organic must be
USDA certified as meeting these standards. Only producers who sell less than $5,000 a year in organic foods
are exempt (免除) from this certification.
If a food bears a USDA Organic label, it means it's produced and processed according to the USDA
standards. The seal is voluntary, but many organic producers use it.
    1. The main purpose of the passage is ______.
    A. to promote the sales of organic food
    B. to inform people organic food is better for their health
    C. to persuade people to become informed consumers
    D. to compare conventional and organic foods
    2. According to the passage, organic farming is intended to _____.
    A. improve the quality of the soil and water
    B. take the place of the traditional agriculture entirely
    C. adopt eco-friendly methods to grow plants and feed animals
    D. prevent livestock from getting disease more effectively
    3. According to the passage, the conventionally grown apple ______.
    A. costs less but tastes worse than an organic one
    B. doesn't look the same as an organic one
    C. has proven itself acceptable by the family
    D. contains more fat, sodium and cholesterol
    4. Which of the following methods belongs to organic farming?
    A. Using chemicals to kill insects and prevent disease.
    B. Using rotted plants as fertilizer to promote plant growth.
    C. Using growth hormones to speed up animals' growth.
    D. Using insecticides to reduce insects and disease.
    5. From the passage we know the organic certification program _______.

    A. is not meant for all producers of produce
    B. makes it compulsory to attach a USDA Organic label
    C. sets restrictions on the sales of organic produce
    D. requires all foods to satisfy the strict government standards

Why should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But, as I hear
different home schooling teachers discuss history, I get the idea that there may be different reasons for
teaching history. Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons
    for studying history.
The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past. I am convinced that the
world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and
the things that made these successes and failures. However, as the unfortunately true statement goes "the
one thing we seem to learn from history is that we don't seem to learn from history."
    Perhaps at least in
teaching history, to my children I can do a small part in changing this.
A second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current political climate
in the absence of an understanding of its historical context. We can- not even understand why we are and
where we are without history, much less (更不必说) try to figure out where we are going or how we
should get where we want to be.
I teach my children history, for one more reason. I purchased a set of historical audio (录音机) tapes
for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over. It was my hope that he would
become inspired by the accomplishments of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by
himself. I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr.
if, in doing so, young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what
he accomplished. I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against
the things that he stood for.
    1. What message can we get from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
    A. Many people aren't clever enough to learn well from the past.
    B. Many people fail to make good use of history and make the same mistakes.
    C. Many people feel it hard to understand history.
    D. Many people have no interest in studying history.
    2. In Paragraph 3, the author shows that history is useful because _____.
    A. it makes the current political situation go smoothly
    B. it helps us realize the importance of historical events
    C. it helps us understand why things are the way they are
    D. it helps people accept the present situation where they live
    3. Some historical figures are mentioned in the last paragraph to show _____.
    A. people can be inspired to do good, while can also learn to fight against evil
    B. people may also learn from bad historical figures
    C. more celebrations should be held to honor their achievements
    D. today's people can also achieve what they achieved
    4. What would be talked about in the following paragraph?
    A. How to teach history effectively.
    B. Some negative reasons for studying history.
    C. How to get more people to study history.
    D. Some bad historical figures.
    5. The main purpose of this passage is to _____.
    A. inspire the parents to teach their children history
    B. show the importance of history in politics
    C. explain the reasons why children study history
    D. introduce the writer's own way of teaching history

Mr. Johnson's car had finished up in a ditch (沟渠) at Romney Marsin, Kent after skidding on ice and hitting

Mr.Johnson, a sweet salesman of Sitting Home, Kent, first tried to attract the attention of other motorists
by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle to escape.

I used it to unscrew the back seat to get into the boot.I hammered desperately with a hammer trying to make

It took ten minutes to unscrew the seat, and a further five minutes to clear the sweet samples from the
boot. Then Mr. Johnson found a wrench and began to work on the boot lock.Fifteen minutes passed by. "It
was the only chance I had. Finally it gave, but as soon as I moved the boot lid, the water and mud poured in.
I forced the lid down into the mud and scrambled clear as the car filled up."
His hands and arms cut and bruised (擦伤), Mr.Johnson got to Beckett Farm nearby, where he was looked
after by the farmer's wife, Mrs. Lucy Bates. Huddled in a blanket, he said, "That thirty minutes seemed like
hours." Only the tips of the car wheels were visible, police said last night. The vehicle had sunk into two feet

                                                               Linguistic (语言学的) Puzzles
How did language begin? What was the world's first language? Do all languages come from one, original
    language? 1_____.
In the 4th century BC, the Creek historian Herodotus wrote this account: Psamtik I an Egyptian King,
wanted to find out what the oldest language in the world was. 2_____. He told his servant to find two newborn
babies. When the servant had found them, the king gave them to a shepherd (牧羊人) and said, "Keep these
babies with the goats. Take care of them, but do not talk to them. Listen for any words that they say." The king
wanted to find out what 1anguage the children would speak if they were left alone. He said, "The first words
they speak will come from the original language of the world."
3_____. He told the king, who asked his scholars about this word. They told him that the Phiygians, who
lived in an area which is now Turkey, called bread "becos." The king said, "Then Phiygian is the oldest
language."Today we know that the king's conclusion was wrong. We don't know why the children said "becos".

and that they star- ted from the same parent language, Proto-Indo-European. Linguists think that it had split into
several different languages, including Greek and Sanskrit, between 2,000 and 1,000 BC. Other languages, such
as English and Spanish, developed from later splits.

First, I'd like to thank you for your reminding, although I don't agree with your view which
students should spend more time on their lessons instead of read novels. Indeed, reading novels
takes up some of the time that should spent on lessons, but it'll make us know what hard life is.
Besides, by reading novels we can gain what we can't learn from our textbook. Of course, reading
novels has it's shortcomings. Novels that have wrong ideas will make us to do something wrong.
Maybe, in your eyes, the disadvantages of reading novels outweighs the advantages. And in my
opinion, reading novels is just as another pair of eyes, which broadens my horizon.
