1. Anna: I get really frustrated easily, and sometimes I end up yell ing at people I love. I'm not very sure why it happens, but I have no control over it. How can I stop? 2. Smith:Some kids are making fun of me because I'm doing very well at school. Isn't that something to be proud of? I need advice. 3. Wilkins: I am not sociable. I am really shy, and I am already a freshman in high school. I have some new friends, but I am still shy to the cool kids. Can you help me, please? 4. Crick: I always say what I feel immediately and without thinking. Sometimes I get in trouble for it or feel sorry about it later. Is speaking your mind a good or a bad thing? 5. June: I love to read! But I don't have any time to read because of all of my activities. I don't want to quit anything. What should I do? |
A Instead of feeling upset, you should definitely be proud of your- self. Intelligence is a quality that everyone wants, and as you get ol- der it's going to be what people love and respect about you. Still water runs deep. I'm sure as time goes by, some of those kids making fun of you might realize how cool you actually are. B Everyone has to learn how to adapt to society and mix socially with others. No man is an island, as the saying goes. To become a so- ciable person, you must be naturally friendly. Besides, do something for a social situation. A teacher once gave me this great advice: Pre parea conversation in your head before going into an uncomfortable social situation. It sounds like a lot of work, but it's easy and it works! Get involved in activities that interest you and you will make new friends fast. C Always keep a book with you so that you can read during pock- ets of free time. Turn some of your TV or computer time into reading time. Read for a little while right before bed, and find time to read on weekends. Also, talk to your parents about your schedule. You might not want to quit anything, but you might need to find more free time in order to have a happy balance in your life. D That feeling is your conscience, and it's telling you that you need to confess what you did. Be brave and tell your parents. Even if they get upset when they hear about it from you, they would be even more upset to hear about it from your friend's mom. So pick a quiet time and say. Mom, Dad, I need to tell you something, but I'm a fraid. Then spill the beans. No matter what they say, you'll be re lieved not to have this secret any more. E First, identify what is frustrating you, then learn to calm your- self down. The next time you start feeling frustrated, stop what you're doing and breathe deeply. Count to ten. Get up and walk around. Clear your mind before you come back to the frustrating task. If you keep a cool head, you'll be less likely to snap at others. And if you do yell at someone, apologize and admit that it's not that person's fault. Then calm down and try again. F Speaking your mind can be a really good thing. Far too many people don't, except when talking about someone behind that person's back. However, there are times when honesty does more than good like when a girl asks if she looks fat. So in situations in which there's no real good, you are better off keeping your thoughts to yourself. In situations in which that is not the case like when your brother asks if his breath stinks feel free to tell the truth. Just be prepared to take it in return. |

Since the prehistoric times, man has had an urge to satisfy his needs, but as we climbed the steps of evolution with giant leaps, we somehow left behind common. sense and logical thinking-we forgot that we have stopped thinking ahead of times. If you are hungry, what do you do? Grab a piece of your favorite meal and stay quiet after that? 1 But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your favorite star and many such absurd things. When mind looses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full stop. This might be the reason why we all sometimes think " What happens next?" " Why can't I think?". Well this is the aftermath of using our brain for thinking of not-so-worthy things. Hunger of the mind can be actually satisfied through extensive reading. Now why reading and not watching TV? 2 Just like that to develop other aspects of our life, we have to take advantage of reading. You have innumerable number of books in this world which will answer all your "How to?" questions. 3 Now this seed is un- knowingly used by you in your future to develop new ideas. The same seed if used many times, can help you link and relate a lot of things, of which you would have never thought of in your wildest dreams! This is nothing other than creativity. The larger number of books you read, your mind will open up like never before. Also this improves your speaking skills to a large extent and also makes a sig nificant contribution to your vocabulary in writing. 4 Actually, I had a problem in speaking English fluently, but as I read, I could improve significantly. 5 So guys do join me and give food for your thoughts by reading, reading and more reading. Now what are you waiting for? |
A. Soon you will find no difficulty employing the right words when speaking. B. The interesting part of the book is stored in your mind as a seed. C. I am still on the path of improvement to satisfy my thirst. D. Just like your stomach, even your mind is hungry. E. Because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from the childhood. F. Within no time you never seem to run out of the right words at the right time. G. Because watching TV too often will make you a" couch potato". |

We have met the enemy and he is ours. We bought him at a pet shop. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest, it's hard not to wonder of the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings." Most of the infections (感染) we think of as human infections started in other animals" says Stephen Morse director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University. It's not just that we're going to where the animals are ; we're also bringing them closer to us. Popular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen's pets and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea."I don't think it's fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowledge of them" says Isaksen. " Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing," says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug (病毒) may be kind at first. But it may de- velop into something harmful (有害的). Monkey-pox doesn't look a major infectious disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person. |

A survey was conducted in Shanghai where interviewees were asked if they wanted to be a factory worker. One percent of all peo ple interviewed said: "YES," Wang Hongjun, a technician, said, rai sing his voice for impressive effect." But I can tell you, only a small part of that I percent are telling the truth." I've met colorful people like Wang all over China. They are cynical (玩世不恭的 ) yet warmhearted, plain spoken but smart. And many of them are confined (局限于) to work in factories. Wang is a top technician but also represents manual factory workers, who are China's most important natural resource. Their en- ergy is powering China's economic boom, and their muscle is turning the wheel of the world's factory. But does their unskilled labor give their life meaning? At school, did they tell their friends:" When I grow up I want to work in a factory making socks?" Did you? Factory work has always been a stepping-stone from farm life to the city and a modern life. It's been happening for centuries, but today, with our space-age technology, it's outdated. Earning 1,200 yuan,( $169) per month working in a factory is better than that on a farm, but as Wang points out, it's not a dream career. There should be better ways to earn your rice. Many modern factories no longer have production line workers. Robots do the assembly (装配). People just do the monitoring. In this age of technology, in which China is now working smarter and not just harder, why are people still standing in production lines? But life is cheap in China. So why not continue to make use of the low-cost labor situation and keep the economy growing fast, some entrepreneurs may ask. But have these businessmen ever labored in a factory? |
1. How many people surveyed really like to be factory workers? |
A. One percent. B. Only a small part. C. Only a small part of that one percent. D. The writer didn't mention it. |
2. Which is NOT the writer's opinion of factory workers? |
A. Cynical. B. Unimportant. C. Warmhearted. D. Plain spoken. |
3. The writer uses _____ to begin the passage. |
A. a lot of figures B. many examples C. some dialogue D. the result of a survey |

Ms. Keller often said," Without Annie Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown." As a little girl, Sullivan was no stranger to hardship (困苦). She almost couldn't see anything and was, at one time, locked in a dark underground room of a mental institution (精神病院) because of mental problems. Little Annie Sullivan would attack anyone who came near sometimes. However, an elderly nurse believed there was hope and she offered to help the child. Every day she made all her efforts to give little Annie words of love and encouragement. At last, doctors noticed a change in the girl. They ever saw an ger and hostility (敌意) in her eyes, while now they noticed a little gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued to become better. Then the day finally came when this seemingly "hopeless" child was released (释放). Annie Sullivan grew into a young woman with a wish to help others as she, herself, was helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw hope in Helen Keller. She loved her, played with her until the flickering candle became a bright light to the world. Annie Sullivan brought wonders into Helen's life. But without that kind and warm heaned nurse, how could little Annie become such a kind-hearted teacher? And so it goes. Just how far back does the chain of love make bigger? And how far forward will it lead? You can never ignore the power of your love. It is a fire that, once lit, may burn forever. |

As more Americans go to mainland China to take jobs, more Chinese and Americans are working side by side. These cross-cultural partnerships, while beneficial in many ways, are also highlighting tensions that expose differences in work experience, pay levels and communication. In the last few years, a growing number of Americans in their 20s and 30s have been heading to China for employment, attracted by its faster-growing economy and lower jobless rate. Their Chinese co-workers are often around the same age. But the two groups were raised differently. The Americans have had more exposure to free-market principles. "Young Americans were brought up in a commercial environment," said Neng Zhao, 28, a semor associate at Blue Oak Capital, a private firm based in Beijing. "We weren't. So the workplace is a unique learning process for my generation." Managers hiring workers in China appear to be paying for Western experience. Foreigners tend to earn 10 to 15 percent more than their Chinese counterparts (persons working in similar positions), said Michael Norman, senior vice president at Sibson Consulting, an American firm. That imbalance does not go unnoticed by Chinese workers. "There is definitely the belief that Americans get paid more for the same work," said Ting Wang, 25, an associate at WildChina, a travel company based in Beijing. On the other hand, Chinese workers have a deeper understanding of the influences, like Confucianism'and Communism, which play a part in their country's culture and economy. It is important and necessary for Americans working in China to adjust, said Mr. Norman, who works on management and work force issues for multinational companies operating in Asia. "In the West, there is such a bonus on getting things done quickly, but when you come to work in China, you need to work on listening and being more patient and understanding of local ways of doing business," he said. |

A. Cross-cultural conflicts. |
2. More Americans go to China to take jobs because _____. |
A. they want to experience different cultures B. Chinese workers are easier to cooperate C. they can't find proper jobs in America D. the economy of China is developing rapidly |
3. What does the underlined word "imbalance" in Paragraph 3 refer to? |
A. Unfair pay levels. B. Different working experience. C. Unequal opportunities. D. Different upbringing environment. |
4. What can we learn from the passage? |

When their parents were children, they imagined a future standing in front of a class of pupils or doing the rounds as a doctor. But today's British teenagers, a survey suggests, seem to have set their sights only on becoming the next Leona Lewis or Wayne Rooney. Researchers questioned 3,000 teenagers about their ambitions and also asked parents about their youthful career hopes. According to the survey, youngsters dream of a celebrity (明星) lifestyle, perhaps after finding fame through shows such as the X Factor, and of being actors or sports stars. Copying the likes of Rooney and David Beckham was the top career ambition of today's teenagers, cited by 12 percent. Almost as many,11 percent, wanted to be pop stars, and the same proportion dreamed of being actors. The success of celebrity chefs such as James Oliver and Cor don Ramsay is likely to explain why becoming a chef is now the dream of 5 percent, a career ambition which did not figure in the list of 25 years ago. A quarter of a century back teaching was the top career choice, cited by 15 percent. These days the job is chosen by only 4 percent. Of the traditional professions, only law has risen in popularity. The survey also suggests that more girls dream of becoming doctors and boys want careers as astronauts or firefighters. Child psychologist Laverne Antrobus said the findings reflect today's celebrity culture and warned children against unrealistic dreams. "Children see footballs, pop stars and actors on TV and their lives look exciting, glamorous and fun," she said."It is hard for them to realize that, they are the end product of a lot of ingredients including talent, determination and years of hard work. Wayne Rooney is not on the pitch by chance." As Antrobus pointed out, there is absolutely nothing wrong with children having big dreams, but" these have to be based on reality," she said. |
