Do you want to live a happier, less stressful (有压力的) life? Try laughing for no reason at all. That's how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world-and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr Madan Kataria. "Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7and 15 times a day," says Dr Kataria. "Everyone's naturally good at laughing-it' s the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives." There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1, 300 worldwide. Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%. So, what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest-I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say"ho ho ho, ha ha ha," while looking at each other. However, our bodies can' t tell the difference between fake laughter and real laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it works! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn't stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and comfortable I felt. So if you're under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results! |
1. In which country was the first Laughter Club started? |
A. Britain. B. America. C. Australia. D. India. |
2. How did the writer feel at the beginning of the class? |
A. Surprised. B. Pleased. C. Nervous. D. Stressful. |
3. When did the people in the club begin to laugh for real? |
A. After a few minutes. B. After a few hours. C. After a few seconds. D. After a few days. |
4. Which of the following is true according to the passage? |
A. Fake laughter and real laughter are both good for health. B. 40% of the people in Laughter Clubs are good friends. C. Adults laugh more often than children in a day. D. Laughing is the best way to prevent illness. |

My favorite great book is The Adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of St. Petersburg, Missouri. He's a lively and clever young boy, and he finds himself in many exciting adventures (冒险). He runs away with his two friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave. and finally, they find a box of gold. My favorite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead. He decides to go to his own funeral. He hides and watches for a time. and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is surprised to see him but they're also pleased to see him alive. Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him. Becky is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Tom's best friend. and Injun Joe is the bad man of the story. The theme of the story is about children growing up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished (惩罚) for bad behavior. Why do I think The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876, but it's still read and loved by people all over the world today. And although it's only a story. Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century,so it sounds very real. Today it's thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature. Go on--- read it! I know you'll enjoy it, too. |
1. Where does Tom run away with his two friends? |

2. Who is the bad man in the story? |
A. Huck Finn. B. Injun Joe. C. Becky. D. Polly. |
3. How did people feel when Tom appeared at his own funeral? |
A. They were surprised and pleased. B. They were surprised and sad. C. They were worried and excited. D. They were frightened and happy. |
5. The whole book is mainly about ________. |
A. freedom and social rules B. children's bad behavior C. the growth of young children D. Mark Twain himself |

One thing that British and Chinese cultures share is a love for fine tea. Today, when we think of Western tea culture, we often think of the English and beautiful china tea cups. Afternoon tea People believe that an English lady, Anna, first introduced the idea of afternoon tea. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the English ate only two main meals each day-breakfast and a heavy supper that would last for several hours in the evening. As a result, people often got very hungry during the long wait between these two meals. To solve this problem, Anna came up with the clever idea of inviting some friends to join her for an afternoon meal between four and five o'clock. This meal included cakes and sandwiches, and tea was served to wash down the food. In order to make this afternoon meal important, fine china cups and plates, and sliver teapots, knives, forks and spoons were used. Soon, afternoon tea parties became popular social occasions. Today, afternoon tea parties continue to play an important part in the social life in modern Britain. Will you come for coffee? Coffee also has an important role in British culture. People often use the words "Will you come for coffee?" to mean "Would you like to come to my home for a chat (聊天)?" Normally, several different drinks such as tea, hot chocolate or a soft drink like orange juice will be served as well as coffee, and you will be asked what you would like. However, you will not normally be served wine at a "coffee" party. Coffeehouses and the London Stock Exchange In the 17th century London, coffeehouses were busy and noisy places. Businessmen and bankers went to coffeehouses to do their business, as well as to drink coffee. In fact, the London Stock Exchange (股票交易所) is believed to have started from these coffeehouses. |
