Most of us have probably heard of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and many other famous characters. Perhaps we have even seen them in movies. But have you 1 been to Disneyland? In fact, there are now several different Disneyland amusement parks around the world. Disneyland is an amusement park, but we can also call it a theme park. It has all the normal attractions that you can find at an amusement park, but it also has a theme. The theme, of course, is Disney movies and Disney characters. For example, you can find a roller coaster in most amusement parks, but in Disneyland, the theme of the roller coaster is Disney characters. This means that you can find Disney characters all over the roller coaster. You can also watch Disney movies, eat in Disney restaurants, and 2 Disney gifts. And you can see Disney characters walking around Disneyland all the time! Have you ever 3 a Disney Cruise? These are huge boats that also have the Disney theme. You can 4 a ride on the boat for several days, and you can sleep and eat on board. There are also many attractions on board, just like any other Disneyland. You can shop, go to Disney parties, and eat dinner with Mickey Mouse! The boats take different routes, but they all 5 in the same place. That is Disney's own island. It is just so much fun in Disneyland.

Character (品质), courage and confidence are words you might use to describe your heroes. These words can describe you! Take action as follows and you'll be a hero, too! Part 1: Character Character is something that makes you the person you are-like being honest, friendly, and helpful. See the chart (表格) below. On the left is our standard of good character. Write down your promise for each line on the right. Then, get a witness (证人) to sign it. Put it up where you'll see it every day and do your best to keep it.
Of course it's going to take a lot of courage to keep your promise. Courage is challenging yourself to do something even though you think it might be hard. For each promise, find out two or three ways to help you keep it. For example, if you think that Being Honest is the hardest promise for you to keep, one of the ways might be "Tell people about my promise so that I won't break it". Part 3: Confidence Confidence is believing that you have the skills to do something. Do you have a beautiful singing voice? Are you a good painter? These are all talents that can make you feel good, as well as the people around you. Once you've decided what your special skill is, think about how you can use your skill to make your corner of the world a better place. If you're good at art, try painting a picture on an old wall in your school (of course, make sure you're allowed).

In the age of reality television, success isn't the only way to the public eye. Failure can also create fame, just like William Hung, 21, a native of Hong Kong. Hung recently has made an agreement with US-based entertainment firms Koch Records and Fuse Music Network. They will publish a full-length record, titled"The True Idol" on April 6. The idol is a civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley. He did a version of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" on the television show "American Idol 3", on January 27. The Fox TV singing contest searches for pop stars among ordinary people. In the case of Hung, however, his act was so bad that the judges cut him off in mid-act. Hung's response? "I already gave my best, so I have no regrets at all." That's good, because any common person would have found plenty to regret: The off-key singing. The blue Hawaiian shirt worn with pants pulled up too high. The terrible dancing. The hips jerking (摇摆) to a beat that did not belong to the song, maybe not even to this planet. It was, by all accounts, bad. But, it was this very bad act that sold well. Marc Juries, president of Fuse, explained it this way: "Every one of us is happily guilty of singing our favorite song at the top of our lungs with complete freedom, completely off-key and completely unworried. That's what William did and immediately won the hearts of America." Whatever it is, for the moment it's big. Three websites devoted to Hung have gone up on the Internet in the past few weeks. Versions of his performance have been remixed with hip hop and techno-music and have made it to the top 10 request list at a Chicago radio station. So, what does Hung think of this? "There were all these people saying things about me. A lot were saying I was very courageous and that I was great on the show, but some didn't have much respect for me and some were kind of mean." Now he says he's not so sure whether to distance himself from the glamour (魅力) or to accept it. Returning to normal hasn't been easy. |
1. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 7 refer to? |

2. Which of the following shows the correct order of what happened to Hung? a. The entertainment firms made an agreement with Hung. b. The judges cut Hung off in mid-act in the singing contest. c. Hung became popular among Americans. d. Hung gave a terrible performance though he tried his best. e. Three websites put Hung's funny performance on the Internet. |
A. d, b, e, c, a B. a, c, d, b, e C. a, d, b, c, e D. d, b, a, e, c |
3. What is the main idea of this passage? |
A. Sometimes an idol behaves quite foolishly. B. Hung's performance attracted the public eye. C. How an unsuccessful person became famous. D. Success sometimes does not require hard work. |

Think of life as a game in which you are playing with five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit (精神) and you keep all of them in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce (弹跳) back. But the other four balls, family, health, friends and spirit, are made of glasses. If you drop one of these, they will be broken. They will never be the same. You must understand that and try to have balance in your life. How? Don't look down on your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different and each of us is special. Don't let other people set goals for you. Only you know what is best for yourself. Don't give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying. Don't be afraid to fight difficulties. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave. Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible. The quickest way to receive love is to give it; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; the best way to keep love is to give it wings. Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where you are going. Don't be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless. It's a treasure (珍宝) you can always carry easily. Don't use time or words carelessly. You can't get them back. Life is not a competition, but a trip, step by step. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery (秘密), and today is a gift: that's why we call it "the present". |
