In Cardiff I was put to work in furniture department at one of the local stores. It was large, fairly out of date, run , like its parent company in London, by a group of relatives. Being only a member of the store for a short time, I was in a very fortunate position. The others, particularly the older members of the store, were naturally asked to produce good sales figures. I was more of an observer. If I made a sale, I was pleased, but if I didn't, I would not be blamed. I was really there to observe and learn, and as I had no interest in making a position in the furniture business, I wasn't too diligent about that either. One salesman in late middle age once expressed his insecurity by scolding me of trying to steal one of his customers. Nothing could have been further from the truth, but he demanded that I go to the stockroom with him to settle the matter. He was very small and thin, but to my surprise he started dancing about among the carpets and closets working his arms wildly and calling on me to 'put them up'. I couldn't put anything up-I was too busy rolling on a four-foot six-inch spring mattress (弹簧垫子) , helpless with laughter. Finally he saw the joke too, and we went off to the members' store for a conciliatory (和解) cup of tea. Several days later, I finally left the store. Thank God! |

Happy birthday! Do birthday really make people happy? Of course they do.Birthday celebrate the day when we were born.Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggest another year of growth and maturity (成熟)-or so we hope.We all like to imagine that we are getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the wonder of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That is a different story. Growing old is not exactly for people in youth-oriented (以年轻人为中心) American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, "You're young as you feel." Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least "young at heart". Many older Americans find the "golden years" to be anything but golden.Economically, "senior citizens" often struggle just to get by. Retirement at the age of 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income.Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care, and housing. Some even experience age discrimination(歧视).American sociologist Pat Moore once dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely-even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect. Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living longer. Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged "baby boomers" are rapidly entering the group of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles(皱纹)are "in".Marketing experts are ready noticing this growing group of consumer. |

A. The young are much more respected than the old in America. B. The old are much more respected than the young in America. C. Growing old makes people feel proud in America. D. The young are often discriminated in America. |

Suppose we built a robot to explore the planet, Mars.We provide the robot with seeing detector (探 测器) to keep it away from danger. It is powered entirely by the sun. Should we program the robot to be equally active at all time? No.The robot would be using up energy at a time when it was not receiving any. So we would probably program it to stop its activity at night and to wake up at dawn the next morning. According to the evolutionary (进化的) theory of sleep, evolution equipped us with a regular pattern of sleeping and waking for the same reason. The theory doesn't deny that sleep provides some important restorative functions. It merely says that evolution has programmed us to perform those functions at a time when activity would be inefficient and possibly dangerous. However, sleep protects us only from the sort of trouble we might walk into; it doesn't protect us from trouble that comes looking for us. So we sleep well when we are in a familiar and safe place, but we sleep lightly, if at all, when we fear that bears will nose into the tent. The evolutionary theory explains the differences in sleep among creatures. Why do cats, for instance, sleep so much, while horses sleep so little? Surely cats do not need five times as much repair and restoration as horses do.But cats can afford to have long periods of inactivity because they spend little time eating and unlikely to be attacked while they sleep. Horses must spend almost all their waking hours eating, because what they eat is very low in energy value. Moreover, they cannot afford to sleep too long or too deeply, because their survival depends on their ability to run away from attackers. |
1.The author used the example of the robot in space exploration to tell us _____. |
A. the differences between robots and men B.the reason why men need to sleep C.about the need for robots to save energy D.about the danger of men working at night |
2. Evolution has programmed man to sleep at night mainly to help him _____. |
A. avoid danger and ineffective labor B. restore his bodily functions C. prevent trouble that comes looking for him D. keep up a regular pattern of life |
3. Cats sleep much more than horses do partly because they _____. |
A. are more active than horses when they're awake B. need more time for restoration C. spend less time eating to get enough energy D. are unlikely to be attackers |
4.Which of the following is the main idea of the passage? |
A. The study of sleep is an important part of the evolutionary theory. B. The sleeping pattern of a living creature is determined by the food it eats. C. Sleeping patterns must be taken into consideration in the designing of robots. D. Evolution has equipped all creatures with a regular pattern of sleeping against waking. |
