Because of my curiosity(好奇心), I had a really exciting weekend. I took a trip to Gloucester to see
some of the world’s most beautiful animals-whales (鲸鱼)in the North Atlantic Ocean.
After a long trip by train and bus, we got on the ship called the “Privateer”. On our way to see the
whales on that beautiful sunny day, I grew more and more excited. After a while we stopped, and everyone on the ship started to shout because we’d seen whales. It was wonderful!
While we were watching the whales, a guide was giving us information about them. She told us we were seeing only two kinds of whales - 50-foot whales (singing whales) and 70-foot whales (the second largest whales on the earth). She also said we could easily tell the different kinds of whales by their tales(尾巴),
since every whale has a different tail, just as people have different fingerprints(指纹).
They all have names as well. On this trip, we saw “Salt” and “Pepper”, two whales named by a scientist and a fisherman. They swam together all the time. Sometimes whales came so close to the ship that we thought we could touch them.
I took twenty-seven photos, which was a really hard job because they moved so quickly, and stayed on the surface of the ocean for such a short time. Having seen the whales was one of the chances few people ever got. I was lucky enough to have that chance.

    D.The ship
    3. We can learn from the third paragraph that _________.
A.there were only two kinds of whales
B.70-foot whales are the largest in the world
    C.whales all have different tails
D.whales have fingerprints as people do

When a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety. But there are a few people who will get into their cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk(冒…危险)being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up.“
Storm chasing(追逐)” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.
Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is very dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm season.
Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. “Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.”
However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth”.

    1. For storm chasing, the first thing storm chasers do is to ______.
    A. head straight for the center of the storm
    B. get into the car for safety
    C. wait patiently for the storm to develop
    D. collect information about a coming storm
    2. Beginners of storm chasing are advised ______.
    A. not to drive in a heavy rain
    B. to do it in an organized way
    C. not to get too close to a storm
    D. to spend more time on it in summer
    3.  By saying “it is all worth it” in the last paragraph, the author means that ______.
    A. storm chasing costs a lot of money
    B. storm chasing is worth hours of waiting for everyone.
    C. efforts(努力)in storm chasing are well paid
    D. storm chasers can do whatever they like.
    4. What can we learn from the text?
    A. Sometimes storm chasers get nothing but disappointment.
    B. Many storm chasers get killed in the storms.
    C. Storm chasing is becoming popular around the world.
    D. Storm chasing is only fit for young people.

The meaning of the word "volunteer " may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means "
one who offers his or her services."There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage(垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of
what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta(加尔各答). The following is her story.
"I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video(录像) about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human
being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I
flew to Calcutta for a few weeks."
"I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better
to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very
much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world."

    1. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who ______.
    A. is willing to help those in need without pay
    B. can afford to travel to different places
    C. has a strong wish to be successful
    D. has made a lot of money in life
    2. Tracy started her work as a volunteer ______.
    A. after she met Mother Teresa
    B. after she finished high school
    C. when she was touring Calcutta
    D. when she was working in a hospital
    3. Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?
    A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa.
    B. She had already had some experience.
    C. She was asked by Mother Teresa.
    D. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example.
