When do people decide whether or not they want to become friends? During their first four minutes
together, according to a book by Dr. Leonard Zunin. "Every time you meet someone in a social situation,
give him your undivided attention for four minutes. A lot of people's whole lives would change if they did
    just that."
When we are introduced to new people, we should try to appear friendly and self-confident. In general,
he says, "People like people who like themselves." On the other hand, we should not make the other person
think we are too sure of ourselves.
Hearing such advice, one might say, "But I'm not a friendly, self-confident person. That's not my nature.
It would be dishonest for me to act that way." In reply, Dr. Zunin would claim that a little practice can help
us feel comfortable about changing our social habits. We can become accustomed to any changes we choose
to make in our personality. "It's like getting used to a new car. It may be unfamiliar at first, but it goes much
    better than the old one."
But isn't it dishonest to give the appearance of friendly self-confidence when we don't actually feel that
way? Perhaps, but according to Dr. Zunin, "total honesty" is not always good for social relationships,
especially during the first few minutes of contact. There is a time for everything, and a certain amount of
play-acting may be best for the first few minutes of contact with a stranger. That is not the time to complain
about one's health or to mention faults one finds in other people. It is not the time to tell the whole truth about
    one's opinions and impressions.
The author also declares that interpersonal relations should be taught as a required course in every school,
along with reading, writing, and mathematics. In his opinion, success in life depends mainly on how we get
along with other people. That is at least as important as how much we know.
    1. When first introduced to new people, we should _____.
    A. be friendly and sure of ourselves regardless of the other people's feeling
    B. always tell the whole truth even if it hurts
    C. appear friendly and self-confident at least for the first few minutes
    D. mention faults we find in the other people
    2. According to the author's advice, interpersonal relations _____.
    A. should be set as a required course in schools
    B. are more important than other courses in school
    C. are less important than reading, writing and mathematics
    D. is the only key to one's success in life
    3. The underlined word 'play-acting' in the fourth paragraph means _____.
    A. being totally honest
    B. being a little dishonest
    C. acting out what one feels
    D. acting in a play
    4. The best title for the passage could be _____.
    A. The Key to Success
    B. Best Ways to Make Friends
    C. Personal Relations
    D. The First Four Minutes

Success Is Not a Destination (目的地)
Should people stop once they have achieved something? No! In life, they are always trying to make
things better or have more of the same success.
Athletes are constantly striving (努力) to shorten time for races, increase heights or distances.
The world of medicine has had its series of successes, too. Christian Barnard performed several
successful heart transplants. Other medical experts have achieved organ transplants. Throughout the
ages, mankind has found treatments and cures for cancer and other diseases. A cure for AIDS might
    soon be discovered.
Age does not seem to slow down achievers. Tina Tuner at 54 is still singing in abundance (丰富)
and attracting sell-out crowds wherever she goes.
Comedian George Burns, in his 90s, wants to perform at Caesar's Palace when he turns 100.
Success does not belong only to the rich and famous. It should be the goal of everyone. Many
successful people have had humble beginnings.
Would you believe that actress Michelle Pfeifer of Cat was a supermarket checkout girl?
At work, we strive for achievement, too. Success may mean organizing a conference more effectively
and efficiently each year. Sometimes, it is not a pat on the back or the promotion that makes it worthwhile.
Often, it is the inner thrill (一阵激动) and satisfaction of achievement, no matter how small it may be.
Aiming for success doesn't mean you are greedy or dissatisfied. It is all part of gaining new experiences.
It ultimately (最终) makes you a more interesting and useful person in society.
The journey to success has its road blocks, discouragement and distractions. It takes great resourcefulness
and achievement to overcome obstacles and setbacks to move on successfully.
    1. If an athlete can shorten time in races, he/she _____.
    A. is a real success
    B. will stop his/her steps forward
    C. is always sure to win
    D. is the best runner of all
    2. The expression "a pat on the back" probably means "_____".
    A. patting somebody on the back
    B. something important
    C. singing somebody's praises
    D. anything important
    3. Which statement below is NOT true according to the passage?
    A. Man now can transplant organs.
    B. Man now can cure AIDS.
    C. Not all successful people have humble beginnings.
    D. Michelle was once a supermarket checkout girl.
    4. The writer of the passage agrees to all the ideas EXCEPT that _____.
    A. any small success will make us excited
    B. organizing a conference is a success
    C. aiming for success is to gain new experiences in life
    D. the journey to success is not so smooth to make

To all of you at Chinese love links,
I am 44 years old and never married. I have always wanted to find that perfect someone that I dream
about. For about the last five years I have almost given up the hope of ever finding the one I truly wish to
spend the rest of my life with.
I have always tried to be a nice guy. I had found your website some four or five months before. I did
not know what to expect. I don't know how to speak Chinese and never thought truly of how I was to an
    Asian woman.
Well, I had a lot of replies from some very nice and pretty women. I had a hard time finding only a couple
to write to. But one stood out from the rest. She was cute, nice and seemed to hold a lot of the same values
as I do. In a short time I had decided to write only to her. We communicated via emails 2-3 times a day and
phone calls once or twice a week.
I went and met her and her family only a week ago. Her name is Ying and she lives in Nanning. I found
Nanning to be one of the most beautiful cities I had ever been to. We had even decided to marry and to bring
her to the USA under the fiancée visa. Not only did she meet everything I had ever hoped to find in someone
else but turned out to be what every woman should be like, at least the ones I have met. We plan to marry as
soon as she is here and start a family together as neither of us has children but we both want them.
So to anyone out there reading this, I can only say this: You may not find what you are looking for if
you're not honest with your partner and yourself. This site worked for me mostly because I was honest with
something that I wanted in someone else. When I did find her, love can work even across the other side of
the world, between language differences and cultural differences. I wish you all luck in finding your perfect
match. I have finally found mine and wish to give all my thanks to those at Chinese love links to help make it
    happen.
                                                                                                                                        Sincerely yours,

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone (克隆) the animal and
save the endangered species (物种). That's a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have
been undertaking for the past five years in a project called "Noah's Ark".
Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos (胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing
them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A &
M's College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the
    species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100
years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into
the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
"The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs
could be a major problem," Kraemer believes. "They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result
in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it's difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science
if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort," adds Kraemer, who
is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
"They are trying to do something that's never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah's Ark.
We're both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there's a lot we can
learn from what they are attempting to do. It's a research that is very much needed."
    1. The aim of "Noah's Ark" project is to _____.
    A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas
    B. save endangered animals from dying out
    C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study
    D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another
    2. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _____.
    A. available panda eggs
    B. host animals
    C. qualified researchers
    D. enough money
    3. Which of the following should be the best title for the passage?
    A. China's Success in Pandas Cloning
    B. The First Cloned Panda in the World
    C. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas
    D. China -the Native Place of Pandas Forever
    4. From the passage we know that _____.

In
general, he says, "People like people who like themselves." On the other hand, we should not make the
other person think we are too sure of ourselves.
Hearing such advice, one might say, "But I'm not a friendly, self-confident person. That's not my
nature. It would be dishonest for me to act that way." In reply, Dr. Zunin would claim that a little practice
can help us feel comfortable about changing our social habits. We can become accustomed to any
changes we choose to make in our personality. "It's like getting used to a new car. It may be unfamiliar at
first, but it goes much better than the old one."
But isn't it dishonest to give the appearance of friendly self-confidence when we don't actually feel that way? Perhaps, but according to Dr. Zunin, "total honesty" is not always good for social relationships,
especially during the first few minutes of contact. There is a time for everything, and a certain amount of
play-acting may be best for the first few minutes of contact with a stranger. That is not the time to
complain about one's health or to mention faults one finds in other people. It is not the time to tell the
whole truth about one's opinions and impressions.
The author also declares that interpersonal relations should be taught as a required course in every
school, along with reading, writing, and mathematics. In his opinion, success in life depends mainly on
how we get along with other people. That is at least as important as how much we know.
    1. When first introduced to new people, we should __________.
    A. be friendly and sure of ourselves regardless of the other people's feeling
    B. always tell the whole truth even if it hurts
    C. appear friendly and self-confident at least for the first few minutes
    D. mention faults we find in the other people
    2. According to the author's advice, interpersonal relations _______.
    A. should be set as a required course in schools
    B. are more important than other courses in school
    C. are less important than reading, writing and mathematics
    D. is the only key to one's success in life
    3. The underlined word 'play-acting' in the fourth paragraph means_______.
    A. being totally honest
    B. being a little dishonest
    C. acting out what one feels
    D. acting in a play
    4. The best title for the passage could be __________.
    A. The Key to Success
    B. Best Ways to Make Friends
    C. Personal Relations
    D. The First Four Minutes

                                          Success Is Not a Destination(目的地)
Should people stop once they have achieved something? No! In life, they are always trying to make
things better or have more of the same success.
Athletes are constantly striving(努力) to shorten time for races, increase heights or distances.
The world of medicine has had its series of successes, too. Christian Barnard performed several
successful heart transplants. Other medical experts have achieved organ transplants. Throughout the ages, mankind has found treatments and cures for cancer and other diseases. A cure for AIDS might soon be
    discovered.
Age does not seem to slow down achievers. Tina Tuner at 54 is still singing in abundance(丰富) and
attracting sell-out crowds wherever she goes.
Sometimes, it is not a pat on the back or the promotion that makes it
    worthwhile.
Often, it is the inner thrill(一阵激动) and satisfaction of achievement, no matter how small it may
    be.
Aiming for success doesn't mean you are greedy or dissatisfied. It is all part of gaining new
experiences. It ultimately(最终) makes you a more interesting and useful person in society.
The journey to success has its road blocks, discouragement and distractions. It takes great
resourcefulness and achievement to overcome obstacles and setbacks to move on successfully
    1. If an athlete can shorten time in races, he/she        .
    A. is a real success
    B. will stop his/her steps forward
    C. is always sure to win
    D. is the best runner of all
2.The expression "a pat on the back" probably means "       ".
    A. patting somebody on the back
    B. something important
    C. singing somebody's praises
    D. anything important
    3. Which statement below is NOT true according to the passage?
    A. Man now can transplant organs.
    B. Man now can cure AIDS.
    C. Not all successful people have humble beginnings.
    D. Michelle was once a supermarket checkout girl.
4.The writer of the passage agrees to all the ideas EXCEPT that       .
    A. any small success will make us excited
    B. organizing a conference is a success

I don't know how to speak Chinese and never thought truly of how I was to
    an Asian woman.
Well, I had a lot of replies from some very nice and pretty women. I had a hard time finding only a
couple to write to. But one stood out from the rest. She was cute, nice and seemed to hold a lot of the
same values as I do. In a short time I had decided to write only to her. We communicated via emails 2-3
times a day and phone calls once or twice a week.
I went and met her and her family only a week ago. Her name is Ying and she lives in Nanning. I
found Nanning to be one of the most beautiful cities I had ever been to. We had even decided to marry
and to bring her to the USA under the fianc?e visa. Not only did she meet everything I had ever hoped to
find in someone else but turned out to be what every woman should be like, at least the ones I have met. We plan to marry as soon as she is here and start a family together as neither of us has children but we
    both want them.
So to anyone out there reading this, I can only say this: You may not find what you are looking for if
you're not honest with your partner and yourself. This site worked for me mostly because I was honest
with something that I wanted in someone else. When I did find her, love can work even across the other
side of the world, between language differences and cultural differences. I wish you all luck in finding
your perfect match. I have finally found mine and wish to give all my thanks to those at Chinese love links
    to help make it happen.
    Sincerely yours,
    Arthur

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone (克隆) the animal
    and save the endangered species(物种). That's a move similar to what a Texas A & M University
researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called "Noah's Ark".
Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and
storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor
in Texas A & M's College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building
blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over
100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda
into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
"The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available
panda eggs could be a major problem," Kraemer believes. "They will probably have to do several
hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it's difficult, but this
could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it
is worth the effort," adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M, the
first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
"They are trying to do something that's never been done, and this is very similar to our work in
Noah's Ark. We're both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and
there's a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It's a research that is very much needed."

    Dear Helpful,
I’m a Senior Three students and I’m in trouble. I used to like English, but now I have some difficulty
in English, especially in English writing. Though I know English is a very important subject, I think now
it is too difficult for me. You know I have got poor results in English many times because my writing is
poor. I wonder why so many students like English and can get good results in English. I do want to be
one of the best students and go to a famous university after graduation. But my English is not good
enough. What should I do?                                                            Worried
