Pumpkin pie(南瓜馅饼) is a taste of home
To the average American, pumpkin pie is a tasty and wonderful dish(一道菜). You couldn't have
    Thanksgiving without it.
For me, however, the smell of pumpkin pie baking in the oven brings other special feelings. My father was
in the army, so I moved house constantly as a child. I had no hometown. Before I could go to school or make
friends in one town, I'd be setting in another.
There were so few things around me to give a feeling of home. When you're young, you don't know the
difference-you think moving is normal. It's only a long time later when you learn that most people have a
hometown they can return to and friends they've always known, but you don't. pumpkin pie was the one thing
that was always there and that's why it's special to me.
Another reason I like it is that I was born on Halloween, October 31. Every time my birthday came around, we made a giant pumpkin lantern. And why give a kid a cake when there was all that pumpkin to use in a pie?
My mom put on her apron (围裙), and before long, pumpkin pie was the centerpiece of the party.
Now, I can't help but feel good about life whenever I eat pumpkin pie. To me pumpkin pie is home.
1.The story mainly talks about _____.
    A. why people celebrate Thanksgiving every year
    B. why pumpkin pie is a popular dish on Thanksgiving
    C. why the writer likes pumpkin pie so much
    D. why people can't have Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie
    2. Pumpkin pie is"home" to the writer because _____.
    A. his father was in the army, so he moved house constantly as a child
    B. he likes pumpkin pie so much that he eats it every Thanksgiving
    C. he didn't have a settled home but he always ate Pumpkin pie wherever he went
    D. he eats pumpkin pie on his birthday every year
    3. Which of the following is NOT the reason why the writer likes pumpkin pie?
    A. Pumpkin pie is the traditional food of Thanksgiving.
    B. Pumpkin pie is a tasty and wonderful dish.
    C. The writer always eats pumpkin pie on his birthday.
    D. Pumpkin pie reminds the writer of home.
    4. Which is the correct meaning about the underlined word "centerpiece" in paragraph 4?
    A. A kind of decoration for the center of a table.
    B. The most important item in dishes.
    C. A works with great skills.
    D. A common dish.

How the iron (熨斗) of tomorrow (the first Self Cleaning Iron) can change your lifestyle today?
General Electric introduces the iron of tomorrow. The iron can clean itself inside where irons get dirty.
Because it cleans itself each and every time you empty it. How? With a push of a magic blue button.
         The magic blue button
The first thing you'll notice that's different about this iron is the blue button on the side. It's marked "Self
Clean". Push this blue button, and you can wash out loose mineral deposits(沉淀物) that remain and block up
inside. Push this button, and you've made life a lot easier.
         Less chance of brown spots
Sure, Self Cleaning Iron is going to cut down on brown spots (Those ugly spots that happen on nice,
cleanly pressed clothes.) because a Self Cleaning Iron becomes clean each time you press that magic blue
    button.
          Steams better longer
Common sense tells you that if you've got an iron that blocks less often it has to stay younger for a long
period of time. In other words, it steams better longer. That's another joy of owning General Electric's Self
    Cleaning Iron.
What does it mean to you
Today you are doing so much more than just running a house and running after the kids. You're working.

You're going to school. It's all part of you to be a better wife, a hotter mother, a better housemaker, we want
to. The new Self Cleaning Iron is another one of Home-Makers from General Electric.

Teachers spend countless years trying to make history come alive for their students. However, US Director
Shawn Levy tries to do this on film in the recently released (发行) Night at the Museum.
The film is adapted from Milan Trenc's book of the same name. It brings to life a world where dinosaurs
wander the earth, a former president rides again, warlike early Asians return, and cowboys and Roman soldiers
seek to bring back their old goals.
The familiar comedy star Ben Stiller acts as a luckless dreamer named Larry Daley. He takes a position(职
位) as night watchman at the New York Museum of Natural History.
On Larry's first night, he's left alone by the three aging guards he's replacing. They fail to inform him of
    the museum's rather unusual nightlife.
Soon Larry finds himself chased(追逐) down the hallways by the very lively skeleton(骨架, 骷髅) of a
dinosaur, in the middle of a confrontation(交锋) with Asian warriors. He is caught in a battle between a
cowboy and a Roman general and meets face-to-face with former US president Teddy Roosevelt, played by
    Robin Williams.
They are each from an exhibit that has come to life through the magic of a priceless Egyptian tablet(药
    片).
While the film fails to develop very much in some areas (for example, Larry's troubled relationship with a
son), it does have enough special effects, and jokes to amuse the audience.
Bottom Line: Definitely not Oscar-worthy, but a great way to relax during a holiday.
1.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
    A. introduce a book called Night at the Museum
    B. introduce a movie called Night at the Museum
    C. made known a US director Shawn Levy
    D. make students learn history easier
    2. We can know from the first paragraph that _________.
    A. teachers don't do well in their jobs
    B. a director can do a better job than teachers
    C. people can learn some history through a film
    D. all history classes should be stopped
    3. Which of the following is NOT true?
    A. The film has the same name as the book.
    B. Larry Daley is a character in the film.
    C. Teddy Roosevelt was once a US president.
    D. All magic Egyptian tablets are on exhibition.
    4. On Larry's first night in the film, ________.
    A. three aging guards are involved in a battle
    B. he doesn't know the unusual nightlife beforehand(预先)
    C. a Roman general plays many jokes on a cowboy
    D. he is caught by a wandering dinosaur
    5. We can infer that Night at the Museum ________.
    A. is a good time-killer during a holiday
    B. will surely win an Oscar
    C. is not a good film at all
    D. will be popular among students
  •      Doodles are signs which you draw unconsciously (无意中) when you are holding a pen in your hand and
just happen to start writing aimlessly. However, there is more to these"diagrams (图形) of the unconscious"
than what you see. Free from the restriction (限制, 约束) of the conscious mind, they can be useful in finding
your character and personality, and many of your secret hopes, ambitions, fears, and dreams.
Faces are a sign of sociability or lack of it. If you doodle happy, smiling faces, you have a friendly,
out-going disposition which people respond to, and you enjoy an active social life. If your faces are bad, this
may mean hating others. Faces looking to the right are sign of outgoing personality and confident expectation
about the future while to the left, a sign of shyness and self-control.
Bare or narrow trees show a lack of warmth. You've probably been disappointed in life or could even be
suffering from a minor illness that needs attention.
If you build a house in layer(层), each layer separate, you could be too proud, too eager to make your loved
ones follow your order and jump to attention. A little untidiness in a house makes the people feel comfortable,
    safe and happy.
If your doodle looks like a web, you are making a cry for help in solving a problem. You feel trapped, and
are seeking a way out; perhaps you even want to travel, try out new ideas and realize your ambitions. But you
lack confidence to step out into the World on your own because of the web you've created around you.
    1. One can probably have the wish to be _____ if he doodles a building with unconnected stores.
    A. a leader
    B. a self-controlled person
    C. a shy person
    D. a lazy person
    2. If you doodle a face, you may do any of the following EXCEPT______.
    A. lead an active life
    B. be out-going
    C. dislike others
    D. live a rich life
    3. What does the underlined word"doodle" mean in Paragraph 2?
    A. To draw without realizing what one is drawing
    B. To draw carefully and attentively what one likes drawing
    C. To write different things without certain limits
    D. To write at home, mainly on the wall
    4. What is the possible best title of the passage?
    A. Don't doodle, or you'll not be able to keep secret
    B. Recognize yourself with the help of doodles
    C. Doodling, an unpopular habit
    D. Doodling may cause untidiness
