Face book, the world's biggest social networking site, is celebrating its sixth birthday. The site's
founder, Mark Zuckergerg, states that Face book will continue to work as hard as it has worked in
the last six years in order to stay the web's number one communication site.
The company started in a dorm room in 2004. Today it has 150 million active users, more than
the 130 million of its competitor MySpace.
Face book set itself apart from other social networking sites because you can communicate with
people you really know and trust. Before, most people didn't want to share their real identities online.
Face book has given people a safe and trusted environment for people to interact online. It has changed
the way people view the world. A friend from any country is only a few clicks away.
It was back in February 2004 when Zuckerberg started "the Face book" from a Harvard student's
room. The aim was to help students get in touch with each other over the Internet. Within 24 hours over
a thousand students had signed up and soon after that the network spread out to other universities.
By 2005 a research study showed that about 85% of the students in the network had a Face book
account. Another survey showed that Face book was almost as important as an iPod. At the end of
2005 Face book came to the UK. And up to today the site has been translated into 35 languages.
Six years after its start, Face book has escaped the universities and colleges. More than half of its
users are not at college any more and the fastest growing group are the 30 to 40-year-olds. Every day
15 million users update their profiles to tell their friends and the world what's happening to them. They
also share photos, upload videos, chat, make friends, join groups and simply have fun.
    1. Face book is different from other social networking sites mainly because _______.
    A. it is set up by Zuckerberg in a dorm room

    D. Face book is considered more important than iPod to the students of the UK.

People say time is relative. But relative to what. I do know that sometimes time "seems" to be moving
slower. Remember Christmas Eve when you were a child? It was the longest night of the year. It lasted
forever! And now it seems like I just paid my bill yesterday… and it's due again!
People tell me all too frequently… I need more time! Oh, really?… Mother Teresa, Michelangelo,
and Helen Keller all had 24 hours a day. Look what they did with their time!
Is it that we need to manage our time better… or our priorities(重点)? You've heard the expression
"first things first". The first step in understanding the power of time is to understand that it is limited. Why
is it then that some people get a lot more done? We know the answer. They use their time smartly.
One day an expert on time management was speaking to a group of students and announced a quiz.
He pulls out a wide-mouthed jar. Next,he places about a dozen fist-sized rocks, one at a time, into the
jar, until no more will fit. "Is it full?" he asks. "Yes," responds the class. "Oh really?" he asks. So he takes
out a bucket of gravel(砂砾), which he manages to work down into the spaces between the larger rocks. "Is it full now?" he asks.
Wising up, one answered, "Probably not." Sure enough . He takes out a bucket of sand, which he
pours into the empty spaces. "Is it full now?" he asks. "No" reply the students confidently. So he takes a
glass of water and fills it in. Then he asks, "What is my point?''
One said, "No matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always fit some more
    things into it!"
"No," the speaker replied, "It tells us if you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get  them in at
    all."
What are the big rocks? The things you should put in to your jar first.
The rich don't get 25 hours and the poor don't get 23… we all get the same. Let's use them wisely!
    Invest your time wisely!
1.The text is written mainly ________.
    A. to explain the origin of the expression "first things first"
B .to call on us to use our time in a smart manner
    C. to introduce a meaningful class given by an expert
    D. to tell us about the relativity and the power of time
2.The underlined phrase "Wising up" in the passage is closest in meaning to "________".
    A. Becoming aware
    B.Telling the truth
    C. Rising to his feet
    D. Raising her hand
    3. How is the passage mainly developed?
    A. By inferring(推理).
    B. By comparing.
    C. By listing examples.
    D.By giving facts.
4.What does the point of the quiz lie in?
    A. How to put more things into a jar.
    B. How well the students learn the lesson.
    C. How to get more done in limited time.
    D. The skill and order is very important.

In a recently published book , I came across some exercises with interesting names such as fishbone
diagrams , lotus flowers and clustering . As I used these exercises in my classes , I noticed that students
were interested . They said more and wrote more . They enjoyed expressing their ideas and sharing them
in groups .They were no longer passively waiting for the bell, but actively took part in the lesson . I find
that creativity can act as a way to increase participation and improve fluency (流利程度).
Creativity has become a popular word in recent years . Scholars in the arts ,psychology (心理学),
business , education , and science are all working to get a deeper understanding of it . Robert J.
Sternberg is a creativity specialist and Yale professor of psychology. He defines creativity as "the ability
to produce work that is both new (original) and appropriate (applicable to the situation)". This definition
is useful, as we want our students to use language in a new way, and to use it correctly and properly.
Most scholars say there are two types of creativity: big "C" creativity and small "c" creativity. Big "C"
creativity refers to genius level thinking that results in artistic masterpieces and scientific breakthroughs.
Small "c" creativity refers to everyday level thinking that can be used in any situation. Our emphasis is on
the latter. While it goes without saying that any of our students could go on to be the next Picasso or
Edison, our aim is to help students produce more ideas and use language in new ways .
1.The underlined words "waiting for the bell" in the first paragraph probably mean        .
    A. longing for a phone call
    B. hoping to have a bell
    C. expecting the end of the class

    2. It can be inferred from the passage that the author thought the exercises in the book were  ____ .

    A. popular
    B. useful
    C. scientific
    D.creative

3.When you use a very familiar word in a new way , you are        .
    A. creative in the sense of big "C" creativity
    B. creative in the sense of small "c" creativity
    C. not creative in the sense of big "c" creativity
    D. not creative in the sense of small "c" creativity
4.The main purpose of the passage is to        .
    A. show how useful the book is

    C. discuss how one can be creative
    D. tell what teaching aims at

                                                             How to Be a Winner
         Sir Steven Redgrave
Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals
"In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes (糖尿病). Believing my career was over, I felt
extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and
competing. That was it - the encouragement I needed. I could still be a winner if I believed in myself. I
am not saying that it isn't difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn't finished yet.
Nothing is to stand in my way. "
         Karen Pickering
         Swimming World Champion
"I swim 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I manage that sort of workload by putting it on top of my
diary. This is the key to success - you can't follow a career in any field without being well-organized. List
what you believe you can achieve. Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they

         Kirsten Best
         Poet & Writer
"When things are getting hard, a voice inside my head tells me that I can't achieve something. Then,
there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to concentrate. When I feel tense, it
helps a lot to repeat words such as 'calm', 'peace' or 'focus', either out loud or silently in my mind. It
