"Hey, Jenna, do you think we'll still be friends when we're eighty-two?" I asked my friend. It was clear
that she was wondering where I had come up with such a question. Losing Jenna would be like losing a
very close sister. We hung out together. We gave each other advice.
"Of course, we'll still be friends when we're eighty-two." Jenna announced loudly.
The next year, in the fourth grade, we met Jamie. The three of us soon became close friends. We
played together almost every day. I thought even time couldn't pull us apart, but I was sadly mistaken.
The three of us started fighting a lot. Before Christmas, we had a really big fight, and Jamie and Jenna
were against me, both saying I was bossy. I felt helpless and lonely. I thought Christmas would be horrible!
I was surprised when Jenna came to my house and gave me an awesome Christmas card she had made for me. I was so sure that she was still disappointed with me.
"Wow, " I said, breaking the silence as we stood on either side of my front door. "Thanks."
"Okay…well…I have to go," she said softly.
"Okay. See you later then…and I closed the door.
"Who was that at the door?" my mum asked.
The card started off with "Merry Christmas", but then it said, "I am so glad we're friends. I am sorry
about what I said when we were fighting. A fight won't stop us from being friends. Besides, we said we
were going to be friends even when we're eight-two."
I stopped reading and started laughing. I couldn't believe I had forgotten what she said that day in her
back yard. I couldn't believe I had been so selfish in trying to get even and making my friends feel sorry
for me that I had forgotten about real friendship.
    1. How would the author and Jenna get along with each other after Christmas?
    A. They would be close friends again.
    B. They would not speak to each other.
    C. They would lose touch with each other.
    D. They would go on fighting with each other.
2.The underlined sentence "I was bossy" in the fourth paragraph means "_________".
    A. I looked like a boss
    B. I acted as a boss
    C. I was fond of giving orders
    D. I was fond of fighting
3.Which of the following is the right time order according to the passage?
    a. Jamie became our friend.
    b. I felt lonely and unhappy.
    c. Jenna, Jamie and I fought a lot.
    d. Jenna brought me a Christmas card.
    e. I was sorry for what I did to her.
    f. Jenna and I promised to be lifelong friends.
    A. f a b c e d
    B. a c f b d e
    C. a b c f e d
    D. f a c b d e
4.The author was delighted when she read the card from Jenna because _________.
    A. what Jenna wrote was funny
    B. Jenna would be her friend again
    C. she was happy about the coming Christmas
    D. she was happy to receive a Christmas card

Global warming is the process of earth's atmosphere heating up. Over the last 100 years, the average
temperature of earth's atmosphere has gone up 1 Fahrenheit. The weather has not changed exactly the
same way in every area of the planet. But scientists think that the rise in average temperature is already
    affecting the earth's climate.
Many scientists now believe that global warming is caused by cutting down trees, producing more
trash, and polluting the environment which are some of the reasons why the temperature has gone up.
Many scientists believe that the biggest causes of global warming are new human technologies that
release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
The greenhouse effect is not new. Certain gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide
and methane, making it hard for heat energy to go into space. In the past, the climate didn't change much
because nature produced just the right amount of greenhouse gases to deal with it.
Today, most scientists are pretty sure that the rising temperature can't be blamed on nature. Ever since
the industrial revolution in the 1700s, humans have relied on machines for daily life. And many of those
machines give off a lot of greenhouse gases. An increase in the release of greenhouse gases from human
activities is throwing nature off balance.
The climate is a very complicated thing, but many scientists agree that the rising atmospheric
temperature has already damaged the environment. Sheets of ice, called glaciers, are melting in Antarctica and other parts of the globe. As glaciers break off and melt into the oceans, they are adding warm water
to the oceans and causing the sea level to rise.
Over the past 100 years, the sea level has risen 6-8 inches around the world. That means land along
the coasts is beginning to disappear under water. Bigger and warmer oceans are also adding to other
weather problems caused by pollution in the atmosphere. Some places have received more rain, others
have had bigger storms and a few areas in the world have experienced unusual droughts.
    1. What is mainly talked about in this passage?
    A. The melting of glaciers.
    B. Global warming.
    C. The world's weather.
    D. The earth's temperature.
    2. What causes global warming according to scientists?
    A. Human activities.
    B. The nature itself.
    C. The earth's atmosphere.
    D. New discoveries
    3. From the passage we can see that global warming will bring about _____.
    A. the pollution in the atmosphere
    B. natural disasters
    C. population pollution
    D. the rise of glaciers

You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mother's Day? Cards, flowers, sales,
TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves it -those are what probably come to mind
for many people when they think of Mother's Day. But there's more to the story.
The earliest Mother's Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The celebrations
honored Rhea, the Mother of the gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called Mothering
Sunday. On this day even servants were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake
was even served with the family meal.
In the US, Mother's Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous
song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn't really become popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis stared a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers
could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil
War. The US isn't alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark,
Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries
honor their mothers at different times of the year.
Learning more about Mother's Day and celebrating Mother's Day are important, but probably not as
important as understanding what your own mother, or grandmother, or aunt has really done for you. And
that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in a year.
    1. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. The reason why people celebrate Mother's Day.
    B. The ways people honor mothers.
    C. The history of Mother's Day.
    D. The great contribution of mothers.
    2.  Where was the earliest Mother's Day celebrated?
    A. In ancient Greece.
    B. In the US.
    C. In England.
    D. In Italy.
    3. We can learn from the passage that _____.
    A. Rhea is the mother of a king in ancient Greece
    B. not all the countries celebrate Mother's Day in May
    C. only mothers were given a day off on Mothering Sunday
    D. it was in 1872 that Mother's Day really came into being
    4. The last paragraph tells us that _____.
    A. all the people should celebrate Mother's Day
    B. only mothers are honored on Mother's Day
    C. understanding mothers' work is more important than just celebrating Mother's Day
    D. people should celebrate Mother's Day every day

You are standing in the kitchen and a voice says, "Add a little more salt to that soup." Yes, it's always
nice to have someone help you when you're cooking. But this voice is not from a man. You are alone!
Then where does it come from? Is it from a ghost? No, this isn't a ghost kitchen-it's the kitchen of the
    future.
Scientists are working to improve everything in the kitchen, from fridges to tables, and even the ways
we cook. They are making a system. It will help a person cook a meal. You don't need cookbooks. You
can hear how to cook food.
The fridge of the smart kitchen has a scanner. It looks at the foods in the fridge. It will order more milk
from the store when your milk has gone bad or there is no more in the fridge. The gloves will test the
temperature of everything they touch and say, "Need to cook longer" or "Hot and ready to eat". If you
leave them on the stove by mistake, they'll say, "Fire!" Even the knives and spoons will speak. For
example, if your food is bad, the knives and spoons will tell you not to eat it.
The future kitchen may look wonderful, but it's not cheap. The multimedia fridge costs about 8,000
dollars. So even though high-tech kitchens are no longer a dream, not everyone can afford one.
    1. In the kitchen of the future, there is a ______ helping you.
    A. system
    B. man
    C. ghost
    D. servant
    2. In the future, you can cook by ______.

    3. The fridge of the smart kitchen has a scanner and it can ______.
    A. help you do everything
    B. clean the fridge when it's dirty
    C. give you a warning when there's something wrong
    D. talk with you
    4. From the passage we know that ______.
