Will you be happy if you have a new Nike T-shirt on? Probably you will. But what if you see
a friend    1    a more fashionable (时髦的) and more beautiful one? You may not feel as satisfied
2    you expect to and the feeling of happiness may disappear in a minute.
Why are we not so happy as we should be? The secret is: we focus on (专注) what we want
instead of what we have. We keep making our list of  desires (愿望) longer and longer. As a result,
we are not pleased with what we have    3    owned. We say to ourselves, "I'll be happy when this
desire is satisfied. " However, another desire appears when this one is met. So we still don't feel happy
though we have got what we want. Happiness    4     when we always have new dcsires hard to satisfy.
Luckily, there is a way to be happy. Think more about what we have than what we want. Rather
than wish you were     5     to have an enjoyable vacation on the beach, think of    6    fun you have
had near home. Similarly, instead of hating to do much homework,    7    teachers for making you have
the chance to practice more. The list of what you have can also be endless. Each time you find yourself
falling into a "I wish life were different" trap (陷阱), take a deep breath and think of    8    you have ever
    had.
Pay more attention to what you have, and you'll probably get more of what you want.    9    example,
your good attitude toward doing homework can bring excellent grades in exams because   10     makes
perfect. Start to focus on what we have! The more we feel satisfied, the more happily we'll live.

Scientists think that a weather pattern (形式) called El Nino (厄尔尼诺现象) caused the Drought
(干旱) in Australia. E1 Nino causes different weather in different parts of the world. It causes a lot of
rain and floods in some places. It causes droughts in other places. Droughts can badly affect people
and the land. E1 Nino lasts about a year.
In normal weather conditions, warm winds from South America blow from east to west across the
Pacific Ocean. The winds early take storms to Australia. These storms bring rain to Australia.
During an E1 Nino weather pattern, the winds change direction. They blow from west to east across
the Pacific Ocean. The storms no longer move across Australia. So Australia gets very little rain during
    E1 Nino.
The drought began in January, 1982. E1 Nino often occurs at this time of year. But that year, El Nino
was stronger than usual. There was very little rainfall (降雨量) in eastern Australia. There was also
very little water in the rivers. The drought was at its worst in February, 1983. At that time, the weather
was very hot. The forests and fields were very dry. Cotton growers eouldn't plant their cotton. Sheep
farmers had no grass for their animals to eat. So many of them died.Because the forests were dry. Forest
fires started quickly. Some of the fires burned for a month. Many forests were destroyed. Over 2,000
people lost their houses in the fires and 75 people died.
The Australian drought of 1982-1983 affected thousands of people and animals. The drought cost
the country over $3,000,000,000. It was a reminder (提示) to Australians of how the weather could
    change their lives.

  • 根据下面短文的内容判断下列句子的正误,正确的用“A”表示,错误 的用“B”表示。
On my first day of high school, I saw a boy from my class walking back home after school.
His name was David. He was carrying his books. As I was walking, I saw a group of kids running
towards him, knocking all his books out of his arms. And then they ran away. David fell down
and his glasses went flying. He looked up and I saw sadness in his eyes. I helped him to look for
his glasses and said, "The kids with bad manners should be punished. " There was a big smile that
showed real gratitude (感激) on his face.
From then on we became friends. The more I got to know David, the more I liked him. Over
the next four years, we always studied,  played together and had a happy time.
On the graduation (毕业) day, I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So I said,
"Hey, you will be the best!" Then he began, "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you
succeed through those difficult years. Our parents, our teachers, but mostly our friends. Being a
friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I'll tell you a story ..." I just looked at the
handsome popular boy in amazement as he told the story of the first day we met.
Everyone was surprised to hear all about his hardest moment. I saw his mom and dad looking
at me and smiling that same thankful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its deep meaning.
Never underestimate (低估) the power of your actions. With one small action, you can change
a person's life. As you can see, "Friends are angels (天使) to make us rise when our wings (翅膀)
    have problems flying.
    "
