I was reading these intriguing stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is my
favorite one-it's so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things.
McDonald's, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my very
    favorites.
         Nike
In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration  for  soldiers. This
logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike's logo was designed by
Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.
         McDonald's
The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler  to  resemble  the  archshaped  signs  on  the  side
of  the company's then walkup hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined
together to form the M. The McDonald's name was added to the logo in 1968.
         Apple
There  are  different  stories  behind Apple's logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious
story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year
later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir
Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn't stay long. One year later it was replaced
almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff's "rainbow apple", a rainbowcolored silhouette(轮廓)
of an  apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbowcolored apple was replaced by the
onecolored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.
         Mercedes Benz
The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a
simple description of a threepointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The
company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Marcedes is the name of Maybach's
elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie. and DMG in 1926.
         Adidas
The  Adidas  logo, which  was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents
mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo
was used for the first time in 1967.

    1. What does the author think of the stories of the great logos?

    A. They are boring.
    B. They are out of date.
    C. They are attractive.
    D. They are practical.

    2. What does Nike's logo stand for?

    A. The goddess of victory.
    B. The source of inspiration for soldiers.
    C. The statue of the Greek goddess.
    D. The wing of the Greek goddess.

    3. We can learn that Apple's present logo is ________.

    A. the religious story of Adam and Eve
    B. a bitten apple with only one color
    C. Newton's sitting under an apple tree
    D. the rainbowcolored bitten apple

    4. Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos?

    A. Mercedes Benz-McDonald's-Nike-Apple
    B. Nike-McDonald's-Apple-Mercedes Benz
    C. McDonald's-Apple-Nike-Mercedes Benz
    D. Nike-Mercedes Benz-McDonald's-Apple

There are several advantages in planting trees:they firm the soil, soak(渗透) up extra water and take
carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. However, it now turns out that planting trees could add to global
warming. We all know that tree roots do a great job of keeping soil firmly on the ground and out of the
wind's power. The problem is that some of the dust clouds play an important part in soaking up carbon
    dioxide.
Huge dust storms blow out over the oceans from  dry parts of North Africa and Central Asia. Tons
of dust are lifted and left as a thin film over the ocean surface.
Dust from China is carried east and left in the Pacific Ocean. If a treeplanting programme there is
successful and the dust supply reduced, the net result may be that less carbon dioxide gets locked away
    in the ocean.
Andy, an environmental scientist has spent the past few years studying dust and says his work shows
clearly the complexity of the system. For this reason the need is to focus on cutting carbon dioxide giving
off rather than doing anything else.
Robert, an American scientist, has  shown that when native grassland areas are invaded by trees,
carbon is lost from the soil. "We are studying why the soil carbon disappears, but one theory is that trees
do a lot more of their growing above ground compared to grass, so less carbon goes directly into the soil
    from trees." said Robert.
In wet areas of the world, the gain from trees absorbing carbon dioxide above ground seems to be
outweighed by the loss of carbon from the soil below ground.
Countries that plan to fight against global warming by planting trees may have to think again. Solutions
to environmental problems are often more complex than they first appear, and understanding the Earth's
climate is a very great challenge.

    1. People usually hold the opinion that ________.

    A. huge dust storms can destroy carbon dioxide
    B. planting trees could reduce global warming
    C. huge dust storms can destroy the oceans on the Earth
    D. planting trees is the only way to control huge dust storms

    2. Andy, an  environmental  scientist, believes  that________.

    A. environmental problems are more complex than expected
    B. trees shouldn't have been planted in dry places
    C. dust plays a more important part than trees
    D. carbon dioxide is harmful to everything

    3. Robert's experiment proves that ________.

    A. trees absorb more carbon than grass
    B. carbon can turn grass into dust
    C. less carbon can make trees grow faster
    D. grassland areas should be covered by forests

    4. The best title for this passage is "________".

    A. The importance of planting trees
    B. The dust clouds soak up carbon dioxide
    C. Is it really useful to plant trees to reduce global warming?
    D. Why the soil carbon disappears

However important school life may be, we can't ignore the fact that children spend more time at home
than in the classroom. Therefore the great influence of parents can't be ignored or discounted by the
teacher. They can become strong supports of the school or they can consciously or unconsciously
prevent the school from accomplishing its aims.
Administrators have been aware of the need to keep_parents_apprised_of the newer methods used in
schools. Many principals have conducted workshops explaining such matters as the reading readiness
    program and developmental math.
Moreover, the classroom teacher can also play an important role in explaining to parents what they
should do. The informal tea and many interviews carried on during the year, as well as new ways of
reporting pupils' progress, can significantly aid the interchange of ideas between school and home.
Suppose that a father has been drilling Junior in arithmetic processes night after night. In a friendly
interview, the teacher can help the parent change his method. He might be persuaded to let Junior
participate in discussing the family budget, buying the food, using a measuring cup at home, setting the
clock, calculating mileage on a trip and engage in scores of other activities that have a mathematical basis.
If the father follows the advice, it is reasonable to assume that he will soon realize his son is making
satisfactory progress in math and at the same time, enjoying the work.
Too often, however, teachers'  conferences  with parents  are  devoted to  unimportant  accounts  of
children's wrongdoing, complaints about laziness and poor work habits, and suggestions for punishments
    and rewards at home.
What is needed is a more creative approach in which the teacher, as a professional advisor, plants
ideas in parents' minds for the best use of the many hours that the child spends out of the classroom. In
this way, the school and the home join forces in fostering the fullest development of youngsters'
    competence.

    1. The underlined phrase "keep parents apprised of" in  Para.2 probably means to let parents ______.

    A. judge
    B. know
    C. design
    D. develop

    2. What is the purpose of the schools' informal tea and interviews?

    A. To improve the relationship between teachers and parents.
    B. To explain to parents the change of the school curriculum.
    C. To report students'  misdoings and suggestions for punishments.
    D. To help develop good communication between school and home.

    3. Why does the author provide the example in Paragraph 4?

    A. To help parents know the importance of home activities.
    B. To show how the teacher can guide in home training.
    C. To prove parents are nonprofessional advisors.
    D. To advise parents to teach kids math at home.

    4. From the passage we learn that the author ________.

    A. thinks teachers should do better as professionals
    B. is worried about children's performance at home
    C. is satisfied with the present state of school education
    D. believes time spent out of the classroom has been wasted

    Dear Economist,
My newlywedded wife and I are deeply in love. There is, however, one issue that threatens the
happiness of our marriage. I absolutely insist on shopping at Walmart. My  wife, meanwhile, would
rather  avoid Walmart at all costs. I have recently tried to convince her that not only does Walmart
offer the lowest prices known to man, but that the chain is also a force for good-lower prices mean
better standards of living for all consumers, increased global trade means a tighterknit(紧密团结的)
international community, and efficient operations translate into higher productivity growth for the
economy. My wife complains about poor labour policies, the fact that Walmart squeezes suppliers,
and that it puts local shops out of business.
Who is right? Will our marriage survive?
         Brian Gee
         Dear Brian,
I have to agree with you about Walmart. Jason Furman, then an economist at New York University,
now an adviser to President Obama, famously argued in 2005 that Walmart was unwittingly (不知不觉地) a  progressive success story. The chain's prices don't much affect me(I prefer Whole Foods)but
Furman estimated  that they benefited lowandmiddleincome Americans to  the sum of around $250
    billion a year.
Walmart does not pay much, so it may depress  wages. Then again, it may increase wages by
offering jobs to the otherwise-unemployed. Either way, the benefits of low prices to Walmart shoppers
far outweigh any seemingly reasonable costs to Walmart employees. And while it is true that Walmart
employees tend to be poor, the same is true of Walmart shoppers.
Armed with this information you can face your wife with confidence. You are sure to win the
conversation. The divorce is likely to be more argued.
          Economist

    1. What concerned Brian Gee so much that he wrote the letter?

    A. His wife refuses to shop at Walmart.
    B. They are faced with a divorce.
    C. They  can't  afford  the  costs  of  shopping  at   Walmart.
    D. They are in conflict about shopping at Walmart.

    2. Brian Gee's wife tends to hold the opinion that________.

    A. it is wrong for Walmart to depress its employees' wages
    B. consumers' lives have improved thanks to Walmart
    C. Walmart's business operation increased productivity in economy
    D. Walmart's business increases global trade

    3. What can be inferred from the reply letter?

    A. Some employees accept the low pay to keep the job.
    B. Walmart appeals to only poor consumers and poor employees.
    C. Employees suffer from Walmart's low prices more than consumers.
    D. Jason Furman, a New York University economist, spoke highly of Walmart.

                                                      Making Peace with Your Parents
As a teen, you're going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding.      1
Here is the challenge:Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them
from the dangers in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses.
Sometimes conflicts can't be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful
relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.
For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry.
A good time to talk is when you're all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into
an argument, you'd better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation-for now.     2      Listen  to
what  your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you're listening.     3
Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about
each others' feelings can disagree without things getting ugly.
4   How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you're going to do. Some
t eens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget
that parents are more than rulemakers-they're interesting people who like to watch movies and go
    shopping-just like their teenagers!
What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be
rocky?    5   You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear.
Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change
    theirs.

    A. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if    you're not on the same page.
    B. You can pick it up again when everyone's more relaxed.
    C. And then you'll be able to accept what your parents say.
    D. Faced with the challenge, children don't know what to do.
    E. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents
         believe  in you.
    F. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.
    G. You may consider seeking outside help

    Good morning, everyone,
It's great honor for me to speak here. My name's Li Xiaojun, born of a harmonious family. My
father and mother are all high school teachers.Influenced by them, I read widely during my early age,
but I've developed a great interest in arts and sports. I'm easygoing, get along well with my classmates.
It is this personality which helps me win over all my classmates' friendships, and also help me
overcome many difficulties both in academic and personal life. Being admitted in your university has
always been a beautiful dream for me. I dream constantly that I, along with mine classmates, will study
happy with the help of the respectable professors;I dream that I will swim freely in the sea, enjoying
    the waves of knowledge.
I hope all my dream will come true in the near future.
        Thank you.
