the 18th century, Americans never ate tomatoes. They grew them in their gardens because tomato plants
are so pretty. But they thought the vegetable was poisonous (有毒的). They called tomatoes "poison
    apples."
President Thomas Jefferson, however, knew that tomatoes were good to eat. He was a learned man.

The food we eat seems to have a great effect on our health. Although science has made big steps in
making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has
shown that perhaps eighty percent of human illness is related to food and forty percent of cancer is
related to food as well. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, some researchers
realized that things commonly used to keep colour in meats and other food additives (添加剂) caused
    cancer.
Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it is difficult to know which things on the wrappings (包
装) of foods are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give
penicillin to their animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of cows. Sometimes
similar tings are supplied to animals not for their health, but just to make a profit.
The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market.
Although some countries have tried to control such things, the practice continues.
    1. Which food is the healthiest at present?
    A. chocolate
    B. alcohol
    C. fresh vegetables
    D. French fries
    2. According to this passage, we can know
    A. perhaps most of human illness is caused by what we eat
    B. perhaps most kinds of cancer are related to what people eat
    C. cancer was discovered in 1945
    D. science has made food unfit to eat
    3. Things that are used to keep colours in meats are      .
    A. harmful
    B. useless
    C. helpless
    D. dangerous
    4. All the additives     __ .
    A. are bright and colourless
    B. are not bright and colourful
    C. have indirect effects on our health
    D. have direct effects on our health
    5. Which of the following is not true?
    A. Some wrappings of food are harmful.
    B. Farmers try to make more money on the market by fattening their animals.
    C. "The practice continues" means "things are still going on like that".
    D. We needn't take care of what we eat.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother's Day, on the second
Sunday in May, and Father's Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love
and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible (有责任感的)
citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers
and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother's Day people wear
carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many
people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead
visit the cemetery(墓地).On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They
often have outdoor barbecues for Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their
own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought  in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is
important, but it is "the thought that counts". Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries,
telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
1.Which of the following is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?
    A. Parents bring up children.
    B. Parents give love and care to children.
    C. Parents educate children to be good persons.
    D. Parents pass away before children grow up.
2.What do you think "florists" do?
    A. They sell flowers.
    B. They make and sell bread.
    C. They offer enough room for having family parties.
    D. They sell special gifts for Mother's Day and Father's Day.
3.Which do you think is right about "carnation"?
    A. It has only two kinds of colors.
    B. It refers to the special clothes people wear on Mother's Day or Father's Day.
    C. It's a kind of flower showing love and best wishes.
    D. People can wear carnations only on the second Sunday in May.
    4. What do you know from the passage?
    A. Mother's Day and Father's Day are both in May.
    B. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.
    C. Not all the children respect their parents
    D. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.
    5. On Mother's Day and Father's Day,      .
    A. people usually have family parties
    B. everyone goes to visit the cemetery
    C. children always go to parents' home
    D. hand-made cards are the most valuable gifts

In the last 500 years nothing about people-not their clothes, ideas, or languages has changed as much
as what they eat. Chocolate (巧克力) drink was first made from the seeds of the cacao (可可) tree by
South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500s. And
although it was very expensive, it quickly became popular, In London, shops where chocolate drinks
were served became important places. Some still exist today. The potato is also from the New World.
Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland
became so dependent (依赖的) on it that thousands of Irish people starved (挨饿) when the crop failed
during the years of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to go to live in America.
There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some
others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world's largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an
important crop in other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia. It was first made into a
drink by Arabs during the 1400s. According to an Arabic story, coffee was discovered when a goat
keeper named Lakdi noticed that his goats were eating red fruits on a coffee tree. He tried one and
experienced the "wide-awake (彻底清醒的)" feeling that one third of the world's population now starts
    the day with.

Since many of you are planning to study at a college or university in this country, you may be curious
to know what you usually do in a typical week, bow you can get along with your fellow students, and so
on. These are the questions I want to discuss with you today.
First, let's talk about what your weekly schedule will look like. No matter what your major may be,
you can expect to spend between four and six hours a week for each class attending lectures. Lectures
are usually in very large rooms because some courses such as introduction to sociology or economics
often have as many as two or three hundred students, especially at large universities. In lectures, it's very
important for you to take notes on what the professor says because the information in a lecture is often
different from the information in your textbooks. Also, you can expect to have exam questions based on
the lectures. So it isn't enough to just read your textbooks; you have to attend lectures as well. In a
typical week you will also have a couple of hours of discussion for every class you take. The discussion
section is a small group meeting usually with fewer than thirty students where you can ask questions about
the lectures, the reading, and the homework. In large universities, graduate students, called teaching
    assistants, usually direct discussion sections.
If your major is chemistry, or physics, or another science, you'll also have to spend several hours a
week in the lab, or laboratory, doing experiments. This means that science majors spend more time in the
classroom than non-science majors do. On the other hand, people who major in subjects like literature or history usually have to read and write more than science majors do.
Purpose of the text To help the students learn about (1)______ life
Things that students usually do in a typical week (2)_____ lectures
    having (3)_____ for every class
doing (4)____ in the lab if you (5)____  in science.
(6)______ of time spent attending lectures Between 4 and 6 hours a week
    (7) _____ of attending lectures. The information in a lecture often (8) _____ from that in the textbooks.
Exam questions are often (9)______ on lectures.
