VR is an emerging technology that has demonstrated potential as an effective teaching tool.
Researchers at the University of Washington have been at the forefront of exploring the   1   of VR to
education. In 1995, for example, almost 3,000 students in grades four to twelve    2   VR in the
classroom, and another 365 built their own virtual environments (VEs).
Make no mistake, virtual reality is on its way into our public schools. The   3   of articles about VR
in educational journals is increasing by leaps and bounds. Workshops and symposia on VR at local and
national education conferences are becoming commonplace. At the same time, the cost of what were
once expensive VR workstations is coming down to the point where schools can begin to   4   them.
Virtual Reality allows us to learn through experiencing places we are not able to visit in the real world.
It     5   us to move things that are too heavy, too light or too expensive to move in the real world. Virtual
Reality also lets us visit places at different time periods that we could not experience in one lifetime. For
example, we could build a VE that allows us to visit our earth today and then travel back in time and visit
    it 100 million years ago.
Virtual Reality allows us to experience a body of knowledge interactively. This is a major distinction
from other   6   technologies: film, television, and photography. Students learn while they are situated in
the context where what they learn is to be applied. They get   7   feedback(反馈) as they explore their
    understanding of the material.
Of course, Virtual Reality is also a place for   8   expression. We can create a world that does not
exist. We can build things without consuming natural   9  . We can create art. We can see music. We can
express our imagination. We can generate and communicate our ideas visually.

The question of whether war is inevitable is one which has concerned many of the world's great writers. Before    1    this question, it will be useful to introduce some    2    concepts. Conflict,   3    as opposition among  social units directed against one another, is   4   from competition, which   means opposition among social units independently seeking to obtain something which is   5   short supply. Competitors may not
know about one another, while those who   6   in a conflict do. Conflict and competition are both classes
of opposition. The meaning of opposition has been stated as a process by which social units function in the disservice of one another; opposition is thus contrasted to cooperation, a   7   by which social units
function in the service of one another. These   8   are necessary because it is important to emphasize that
competition between individuals or groups is inevitable in a world of limited    9   , but conflict isn't.
Conflict, nevertheless, is very likely to occur and is probably an essential and desirable element of human
    societies.
Many authors have   10   their arguments that war cannot be avoided on the idea that in the struggle for existence among groups of animals, only those which are best   11  remain alive. In general, however, this
struggle in nature is competition, not conflict. Those who fail in this competition   12   starve to death or
are  13  by other types of animals. This struggle for existence is not similar to human war, but is like the
competition of   14   for jobs, markets, and materials. The most important quality of this struggle is the
15   for the necessities of life that are not enough to satisfy all.

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and
my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and
some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought
of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was
saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was
going to see-the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I
was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism (乐观主义), but the idea did not
come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost-having to study in three
schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother
remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I
got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times."
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration officers, took my grandparents to
the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles eventually go
away!   Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I
believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.
    1. How did the author get to know America?
    A. From her relatives.
    B. From her mother.
    C. From books and pictures.
    D. From radio programs.
    2. For the first two years in New York, the author        .
    A. often lost her way
    B. did not think about her future
    C. studied in three different schools
    D. got on well with her stepfather
    3. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?
    A. She worked as a translator.
    B. She attended a lot of job interviews.
    C. She paid telephone bills for her family.
    D. Her good command of English helped her family.
    4. The author believes that
    A. her future will be free from troubles
    B. it is difficult to learn to become patient
    C. there are more good things than bad things
    D. good things will happen if one keeps trying

We have met the enemy, and he is ours. We bought him at a pet shop. When monkey-pox,a disease
usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest,it's hard not
to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. "Most of the
infections we think of as human infections started in other animals," says Stephen Morse, director of the
Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University.
It's not just that we're going to where the animals are; we're also bringing them closer to us. Popular
foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen's pets, and
she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. "I don't think it's fair to have them as pets when
we have such a limited knowledge of them," says Isaksen.
''Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need
changing," says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected
animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug (病毒) may
be kind at first. But it may develop into something harmful. Monkey-pox doesn't look a major infectious
disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person.
    1. We learn from Paragraph l that the pet sold at the shop may         .
    A. come from Columbia
    B. prevent us from being infected
    C. enjoy being with children
    D. suffer from monkey-pox
    2. Why did Isaksen advise people not to have foreign pets?
    A. They attack human beings.
    B. We need to study native animals.
    C. They can't live out of the rain forest.
    D. We do not know much about them yet.
    3. What does the phrase "the wake-up call'' in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?

    A. a new disease
    B. a clear warning
    C. a dangerous animal
    D. a morning call

    4. The text suggests that in the future we         .
    A. may have to fight against more new diseases
    B. may easily get infected by diseases from dogs
    C. should not be allowed to have pets
    D. should stop buying pets from Africa

What is eBay? The simple answer is that it is a global trading platform where nearly anyone can trade
practically anything. People can sell and buy all kinds of products and goods, including cars, movies and
DVDs, sporting goods, travel tickets, musical instruments, clothes and shoes- the list goes on and on.
The idea came from Peter Omidyar, who was born in Paris and moved to Washington when he was
still a child. At high school, he became very interested in computer programming and after graduating
from Tuft University in 1988, he worked for the next few years as a computer engineer. In his free time
he started eBay as a kind of hobby, at first offering the service free by word of mouth. By 1996 there
was so much traffic on the website that he had to upgrade and he began charging a fee to members.
Joined by a friend, Peter Skill, and in 1998 by his capable CEO, Meg Whitman, he has never looked
    back
. Even in the great.com crashes of the late 1990s, eBay has gone from strength to strength. It is
now one of the ten most visited online shopping websites on the Internet.
EBay sells connections, not goods, putting buyer and seller into contact with each other. All you have
to do is make an e-photo, write a description, fill out a sales form and you are in business: the world is
your market place. Of course for each item sold eBay gets a percentage and that is great deal of money.
Every day there are more than sixteen million items listed on eBay and eighty percent of the items are
    sold.
    1. We learn from the text that eBay provides people with_______.
    A. a way of buying and selling goods
    B. a website for them to upgrade
    C. a place to exhibit their own photos
    D. a chance to buy things at low prices
    2. Why did Peter create eBay after graduating from university?
    A. For fun.
    B. To make money.
    C. For gathering the engineers.
    D. To fulfill a task of his company.
    3. From "he has never looked back "in Paragraph 2, we learn that Peter______.
    A. did not feel lonely
    B. was always hopeful
    C. did not think about the past
    D. became more and more successful
    4. How does eBay make money from its website?
    A. By bringing CEOs together.
    B. By charging for each sale.
    C. By listing items online.
    D. By making e-photos.
  • Directions: Read the following passage and choose the most suitable heading from this list for each
paragraph of the passage. There is one extra heading.
    A. Don't get too close
    B. Know your boss
    C. Don't stay late
    D. Make your boss look good
    AB. Solve your own problems
    AC. Listen attentively
    1.
Learning how to deal effectively with a superior will benefit both of you. Good listening means hearing not only what the boss says but also what he or she implies. It means being able to summarize and to respond
intelligently. Forget any nervousness and concentrate on what your boss is saying. Take notes. Ask a
question or two, briefly summarize what has been said.
Remember: boss like people who don't have to be told things twice.
    2.
Nothing eats away at a manager's time - and influence - more than employees who can't solve their own
problems. Handling your own difficulties will help you develop the skills and contacts you need to work
effectively and will raise your value in your boss's eyes.
    3.
Hard work shows enthusiasm and inspires others. Put in extra hours at the beginning and not the end of
the day. You'll be fresh, not tired. Plus, coming in early says, "I'm eager to get started" while staying late
says, "I didn't get things done."
    4.
Knowing your boss should not reach the point at which you become closely involved with each other's
personal lives. You and your boss aren't equals in your organization. Being too close to your boss might
cause co - workers distrust you.
    5.
This is the heart and soul of boss management. Point out his or her strengths to others. Keep him
informed. Never offer new information in a meeting where your boss is present. Give him the facts in
advance and let him do the talking.
