I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch(牧场). He has let me use his 1 to raise money for poor students. 2 I was there he introduced me by saying,"I want to tell you why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a boy who was the son of a 3 horse trainer. " One day the boy was 4 to write a paper about what he wanted to do when he grew up. He wrote a paper describing his 5 of someday owning a horse ranch. Two days later he 6 his paper back. On the front page was a large red "F" with a note 7 ,"See me after class. " The boy went to see the 8 after class and asked,"Why did I receive an F?"The teacher said,"This is a(n) 9 dream for a young boy like you. You have no coins. 10 a horse ranch requires a lot of 11 . "Then the teacher added,"lf you 12 rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal,I will 13 your grade. "The boy went home and 14 about it long and hard. Finally, the boy 15 the same paper, making no 16 at all. He said,"You can keep the F and I'll keep my 17 ." " He added, "The best part of the story is that the same teacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week. " When the teacher was leaving,he said, " Look,Monty,I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher,I was something of a dream 20 . Fortunately you had enough determination not to give up. " Don't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart,no matter what happens. | ||||

People often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental condition that can be cured. I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability. It's something we are bom with and something we carry with us in our entire lives. There are too many people, however, who seem to be determined to find some ways of doing away with their shyness. In my opinion,it's a waste of time. I don't mean that we should do nothing about it;quite the contrary,I think we need to separate the basic fact of shyness from our ability to take part in a social environment. Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all,Johnny Carson. This man is painfully shy,yet for decades he made a living talking and associating(交往) with different people every night,in front of a national audience. Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he has successfully found a way to deal with it to the extent that he could be, not just a talk show host, but a legend(传奇) among talk show hosts. Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is a woman who has appeared in many films,TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was so shy that she tumed down a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her. I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is bom with some msecurity(不安全感) and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do. As we grow up and become adults,we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness took root in our soul. |
1. In the author's view,shyness can be explained as ______. |
A. a disease that can be easily cured B. a not very normal mental condition C. an emotional disability D. something we pick up after birth |
2. The author believes it's a waste of time to _____. |
A. develop a healthy personality B. talk with as many people as possible C. study where shyness comes from D. look for ways to do away with one's shyness |
3. Which of the following is TRUE of Johnny Carson? |
A. He dared to speak in front of a national audience. B. He did away with his shyness carefully. C. He was described as a hero in some legend books. D. He failed to become a good talk show host. |
4. The passage tells us that Sally Fields was ______ |
A. proud all the time B. impolite when young C. shy in her early years D. close to Jane Fonda |
5. The author thinks that our shyness is there because ______. |
A. we are not open enough B. we don't feel safe at heart C. we try to reach out to others all the time D. we lack certain social skills |

When you cross over the border from England into Wales you don't have to show your passport but you do notice a difference immediately. All the road markings and signs are shown in two languages-English and Welsh. Not all visitors to Britain know that other languages are spoken here. There's the Gaelic language in Scotland and a few people speak Comish in the southwest of England, but the most widely spoken language in the UK apart from English is Welsh. Perhaps the first Welsh word you'll see on the road into Wales is ARAF. There's a helpful English translation next to it-SLOW. As you can see,Welsh looks quite different to English. It sounds very different too. If you think English pronunciation is difficult, try this: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogery-chwymdrobwllantysiliogogogoch. That's the name of a small town in Wales and,in English,it means "The church of Saint Mary in the hollow of the white hazel tree near the rapid whirlpool and the church of Saint Tysilio near a red cave". Welsh looks and sounds so different from English because it's a Celtic language. Celtic cultures still exist around the edges of the UK-in Wales,Scotland and Northem Ireland and also in parts of France. For hundreds of years, almost everyone in Wales spoke Welsh but nowadays there are only about 500,000 Welsh speakers-about 20% of the population. So is Welsh dying out? Not at all. Nowadays all school children in Wales study Welsh and many choose to go to an all Welsh-speaking school. You can get public information in Welsh, speak Welsh in court or take a course at university in Welsh. People surf the Net in Welsh, keep up with friends on Facebook and write blogs in Welsh. And by the way," Croeso i Cymru ! " means "Welcome to Wales"-I hope you'll be able to visit one day. |
1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the article? |
A. Only English and Welsh are spoken in Britain. B. Welsh has its roots in the same culture as English. C. Welsh is the second most widely spoken language in the UK. D. All visitors know other languages are also spoken in Britain. |
2. The writer gives the name of a small town in order to _____. |
A. show that the small town's name is very strange B. show that learning Welsh is great fun C. tell us that Welsh is widely used in Wales D. tell us that Welsh is difficult to pronounce |
3. It can be inferred from the last two paragraphs that _____. |
A. Welsh still plays an active part in Wales in daily life B. most British children go to an all-Welsh school nowadays C. Welsh is mostly used in court in the UK D. Welsh is likely to disappear soon |
