Feb.3,2006-According to CCTV 4,Chinese scientists have recently taken the lead in building the first
full super-conducting experimental nuclear fusion (核聚变) device known  as"artificial sun"in the world,
which will produce energy like the sun.
It is reported that this device consists of five layers of components(成分)from inside to outside and the
circulating magnet container in the innermost layer looks like a giant" swim ring". In experimental tests, the
temperature of inner" swim ring" will reach as high as 100 million degrees Celsius. Therefore, such
component is a significant part to stimulate solar fusion reactions.
Wan Yuanxi, who is in charge of the project called Experimental Advanced Super-conducting
Tokamak( EAST) ,an important scientific project under China's ninth five-ycar plan, explained the reason
why the sun always gives off light and why the energy it produces will not decrease. Under high pressure
and high temperature, fusion reactions will take place from inside to outside of the sun.
Such fusion reactions will give rise to a great deal of energy to enable the sun to continuously emit light
and heat. However, fusion reactions on the sun are uncontrollable, just like an H-bomb explosion seen on
the earth. A huge amount of energy will be produced in a minute, which may be destructive. In order to
make use of such energy,a transformation from the process of energy production to a stable, sustainable
and controllable process is needed. EAST is serving to initiate such a transformation. Under magnetic
    force,the op-
eration of hydrogen plasma isotope (同位素) will be restrained in the" swim ring" and high density
collision will happen, namely the fusion reactions. The hydrogen isotope got from one liter of seawater
can produce energy equal to 300 liters of gasoline through complete fusion reactions.
Wan said that we can get endless clean energy by producing such a device for accomplishing fusion
reactions, which is equal to one or a few small suns made by human beings themselves so that they can
ceaselessly obtain energy from nuclear fusions.
    1. What's the best title for the passage?
    A. Wan Yuanxi and His Invention.

    C. How to Produce the" Artificial Sun".
    D. China Built the World's First"Artificial Sun".
    2. What does the underlined word" artificial". ( in Para. 1 ) mean?
    A. Not real.
    B. Man-made.
    C. Actual.
    D. Ancient.
    3. Which of the following is NOT true?
    A. The temperature of the innermost part of the " artificial sun" will reach as high as 100 ,000 ,000?.
    B. EAST is an important scientific project under China's ninth five-year plan.
    C. Such fusion reactions in the" artificial sun" will give us limited energy.
    D. The hydrogen isotope got from one liter of seawater can produce energy equal
to 300 liters of gasoline through complete fusion reactions.
    4. What's the purpose of making the" artificial sun" ?
    A. To get more energy.
    B. To get more light.

                                                      Insects Eating Your Crops?
                                                             Call on a Ladybug
There are lots of insects that farmers hate. But there also are some they like. These protect crops
against damage from other insects. A good example is the lady beetle, also known as the ladybug
Lady beetles are a natural control for aphids (蚜虫). Lady beetles are red, orange or black. They
often have black spots, though some have light colored spots. Different kinds of lady beetles have
different numbers of spots. There are lady beetles with four, five, seven and fourteen spots.
Many of the well-known kinds of lady beetles come from Asia or Europe. They are now common
    throughout the United States.
American scientists imported one kind of lady beetle, the multicolored Asian lady beetle,as early as
1916. They released them as an attempt to control some kinds of insects. Over the years, the beetle has
become established, possibly helped by some that arrived with imported plants on ships.
Experts say over 450 kinds of lady beetles are found in North America. Some are native to the area. Others have been brought from other places. Almost all are helpful to farmers.
The Asian lady beetles now in the United States probably came from Japan. The Asian lady beetle
eats aphids that damage crops like soybeans, fruits and berries.
In the southern United States,Asian lady beetles have reduced the need for farmers to use pest-killing
poisons on pecan trees. This popular tree nut suffers from aphids and other pests that the
    beetles eat.
But some people say the Asian lady beetle has itself become a pest. They worry that the beetles may
    eat their late-autumn fruit crops.
Experts say Asian lady beetles may appear in large numbers in some years. But they say the insects
are too helpful to be considered pests.
    1. What do ladybugs look like?
    A. All kinds of ladybugs are of the same color.
    B. Most of them are red, orange and black.
    C. They each have the same number of spots on them.
    D. The farms like them.

    A. nine decades
    B. hundreds of years
    C. half a century
    D. a century
    3. Which of the following is NOT supported in the passage?
    A. There are more than 450 kinds of ladybugs in North America, including native ones.
    B. Only some imported ladybugs are helpful to the local plants.
    C. Soybeans, fruits and berries are favorites of Aphids.
    D. Pecan trees are common in the south of America.
    4. According to the experts,ladybugs are _____   .
    A. more helpful than considered as pests.
    B. more pests than helpful insects.
    C. helpful as well as destructive.
    D. are more destructive than helpful.

Dog training is a business for some people,a serious hobby for others, and aonce-in-a-lifetime
experience for many. Individuals in all of these categories would probably agree that consistency
(一贯 性) is a key element of success from the beginning.
If puppies are to be socialized, they must learn to control the impulse to use the carpet as a
bathroom, chew shoes,or nip at fingers. The first issue, bathroom training is more easily accomplished
in warm weather. Try to feed your pup outdoors, and after he has finished eating, take him to a spot
where you would like him to eliminate. If he cooperates, praise him generously with words and pats.
Take him to the same spot after each meal, and eventually he will follow this routine himself.
The sight of a small puppy chewing through a new tennis shoe will make you do well to remove
the stolen shoe from the pup's mouth and firmly say" No" . Provide your pup with some acceptable
toys, such as a ball or a chew toy.
Until your pup is well trained and trustworthy, don't leave him unattended (无人看管的 ) unless
he  is  limited  to  a  small  area. When he is young, you want to be sure someone will praise your pup
or desired behavior and express disapproval when he does some- hing you want to discourage.
You will want your dog to learn to respond to the commands Come" , " Sit" ,and" Stay" . Again,
consistency and praise will help you achieve this goal. Each time the dog responds as you wish, praise
him. Whenever he ignores your commands, make him do what you commanded and then praise him.
Negative behavior must be attended to also. You can discipline most dogs without hitting them.
Since they are usually anxious to please, most dogs are duty-punished-by-cruel words and tone of voice.
Remember to be consistent so your dog knows unquestioningly what is acceptable behavior.
Although the first stages of dog training require a great deal of time and patience, the reward of a
socialized and obedient dog is well worth the effort.
    1. Dog training is appropriately attempted by___.
    A. professionals
    B. hobbyists
    C. zoologists
    D. anyone
    2. What is negative behavior best handled by?
    A. A slap on the nose.
    B. Tying the dog up.
    C. A firm tone of voice.
    D. Starving the dog.
    3. The article deals with all of the following EXCEPT___.
    A. chewing problems
    B. barking at strangers
    C. bathroom training
    D. responding to commands
    4. What might be the best title for this passage?
    A. Tips on Training Your Dog.
    B. A Good Puppy.
    C. A six-Week Program to Train Your Dog.
    D. Leave Dog Training to the Professionals.

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, swimming, or in
winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some form-football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It
    may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion ( strong emotion) for climbing high mountains are often looked upon with
astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high
mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the differences between mountaineering and other
    forms of activities.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man- made  rules as others ,such as golf and
football. There are ,of course , rules of different kinds which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this
freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering at- tractive to many people. Those who climb
mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference
is that mountaineering is not a" team  game " . There  are ,it  is  true , no " matches " between " teams"
of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is
    obviously teamwork.
A mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than
man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past it by the age
of thirty, but it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountain in the Alps. They may
take more time than younger men,but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and
    they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
    1. What movements are popular among people in winter in the passage?
    A. Soccer and golf.
    B. Skiing and skating.
    C. Cycling and hockey.
    D. Mountaineering.
     2. Mountaineering is a sport,not a game,because _____  .
    A. it has man-made rules
    B. it is too dangerous for climbers
    C. it can't bring people joy and leisure
    D. it is free for climbers to use their own methods
    3. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
    A. Mountaineering is a match between climbers.
    B. Mountaineering is similar to other sports in many ways.
    C. Climbers work like a team when their lives may depend on a rope.
    D. Climbers help each other in time of difficulty.
    4. It can be inferred from the passage that____.
    A. mountaineering has no appeal to people
    B. physical quality is more important than mental quality for climbers
    C. a mountain climber would pass it by the age of thirty
    D. it is possible for an old man of fifty or sixty to climb the Alps

In Texas, there was once a prairie dog town that housed about 400 million of the small, fat rodents
(啮齿动物) in its network of tunnels and burrows (穴). But it was not crowded in this town. There was
sunlight and fresh air for all. There was enough grass to furnish food.
Scientists have leamed that the prairie dogs found in many parts of the West can live together in huge
numbers without being crowded. Scientists know that each prairie dog town is divided into separate
territories. Each section belongs to a family group,or clan.
The animals cooperate in many ways. One of the prairie dogs who sense danger will wam the others. All the animals take cover. Still, the animals stay within their own sections of the town and eat only the
plants that grow there. Young prairie dogs are taught the clan boundaries, and they later teach the
    boundaries to their own young.
What happens when one clan becomes too large for the food in its territory? Is there any war with
the next-door clan to win more land? Not at all. The territory is turned over to the younger members
of the clan. The older animals move out to the edge of the town. They stake out a new territory and dig
a new network of tunnels. Before long, another clan will form a new territory beyond them. In this way,
a prairie dog town grows and grows, but the number of animals in each section stays about the same.
